Some speculation this week that Draisaitl nearing a deal for 8-years for between $13.25 to $13.8MM per year. Stauffer and Seravalli among those yakking about it, but nothing concrete yet. Some discussion that Draisaitl wants the longest deal possible, and that he will leave money on the table, so long as he knows that others are going to do the same.
Would be great news if true, although a couple days later, nothing concrete has come out. It is possible that like here, the summer doldrums have hit and sports media guys need something to gab about. Fingers crossed.

This is the most important signing in the Oilers modern day history, and an 8 year deal with a number 13 in front of it sets the team up for the foreseeable future. 🤞
Leon is the first domino to drop in a potential epic decade long stretch of Edmonton hockey, or the beginning of a turd storm.

It doesn't appear that this was as close to done as was reported...
Hopefully we hear something soon. The longer it goes, the more I worry. This should be a relatively easy negotiation if he wants to stay, other than just where the final number falls.

The "others doing the same" piece for a discount is probably tough to work out. Do they think Bouch should be leaving something on the table for his first real big payday? While nurse, McDavid, drai all got a fat contract already? Hope that isn't a point of contention. There isn't really anyone else pending where you could be pushing a meaningful discount.
Best case McDavid and Drain both sign very similar deals like Toews and Kane did back in the day. McDavid with the gentleman's handshake with his old agent for something that will be signed July 1st next year. Bouch has ever right to wait things out. Not hos fault Holland never cared to even explore a long term deal and blew all the cap space to make it impossible.

It's the Nurse contract that's such a killer. Obviously 2 understands how important 97 and 29 are and what their value is. But how do you convince him to sign long term making less than a guy who's basically unplayable in the NHL without a babysitter? The answer is probably that you can't.

I wouldn't expect him to. We are probably gonna get 2 years of 9M+ quality play from Bouch now for 3.9M, and it's just our orgs fault we couldn't even explore signing him long term before because the cap space was never there due to bad management.
Hope no one is honestly expecting him to take a discount when McDavid, Drai and Nurse are all pushing $100M+ of earnings locked in already. McDavid and drai looking at the $150-200M+ level right now.

Lol, wow. This loophole was just missed all this time? We better use it ASAP before the league shuts the door on it.

Apparently its been used already prior to Jarvis.. Carolina used it on Slavin's contract.. but to a much smaller degree.. both the NHL and NHLPA reviewed it and signed off on it.. so Carolina just did it again with Jarvis.. except they saved more with his.. 400K less per year on cap over 8 years .. so precedent is in.. NHL and NHLPA BOTH approved it.. so Oilers should use it on #29.. and.. and McDavid.. then run like you stole it!!

Puckpedia now has a Tulsky Kalculator.. he has Jarvis's contract structure up for comparison.. interesting method..
https://puckpedia.com/deferred
..throwing in a 14M x 8 contract for Leon.. and defer 4M for 1st 4 years ($16M) to year 9.. gives you a savings of 582K per year over 8 years @5.47% interest rate.. not a huge amount..
.. if you defer $8M for the 1st two years ($16M).. you save $658K per year
