I've never been a PLD guy. He seems like he has a give a crap problem. He didn't have a great season. However, the Kings gave up a TON to get him. I would have thought they would have wanted to at least see for 1 more year if he could turn it around. Sometimes players struggle their first year. New City, new coach, system, etc. I guess if they waited, I think he had a NMC kicking in.

Yeah his no trade clause would've kicked in July 1st, 2024....literally less than 2 weeks away!
Hence the urgency to offset the clauses in his contract asap

Markstrom gets traded for a 2025 1st, top 10 protected, plus Bahl who's a huge, defensive dman.
Sharks take Goodrow off waivers and his 3.641 salary. The Rangers must be doing cartwheels.
Kings traded PDL to the Caps for Kuemper straight up.
|
Kuemper alone doesn't scare me as Oilers fan...it's what the Kings could potentially do with that cap space that might sound some alarms.
Funny guy Rob Blake...gives McClellan vote of confidence mid-season only to let him go weeks later. Gives vote of confidence to PLD saying the organization would "stay the course" with his development only to offset his cap hit & term just months later.
|
I am feeling much better about a Leon re-up right now than I was half way through the Vancouver series. I cannot believe someone took PLD at full retention. And Kuemper in LA is no different than Quick, Talbot or Big Save Dave. An aging goalie in full decline aside from one season in Colorado where even then he was pulled 6 times during that run.
|
Shows how the pedigree that some players have just never gets washed off in some GM's eyes. PLD still seen as a former top pick that could have big upside by multiple teams in the last few years, just ignoring his slacking arse all the time.
Nurse probably has a beautiful pedigree still in the eyes of many GMs out there ... just sayin.
|
I do wholeheartedly agree there is upside not just in Nurse the player but his contract too. You can trade him to a bad team...then the rebuilding franchise can eat some of his contract for the remainder while offsetting his services to another contender in exchange for future assets.
As for PLD, I don't really blame the Caps in trading for his services or contract. Caps fluked their way into the playoffs absolutely knowing they'll need a slower rebuild so kudos to them for not being in denial while shifting towards a gradual retool.
With guys such as John Carlson, TJ Oshie, Nicklas Backstrom, and Ovechkin retiring in 2-4 years....Caps need to meet the salary floor somehow while going through that rebuild. It also helps immensely that the soon to be retired players are not pressuring management for quick fix transactions to get the franchise another cup while they're still active NHLers. Seems like both management and franchise veteran players are ok with a slow death/simultaenous rebuild as the latter approach the end of their playing career.
I'd also say there are probably multiple exit strategies with PLD in Washington as well.
1 - He might be serviceable if the team somehow turns into a contender in the short-term
2 - PLD might be ok helping the team meet the cap floor if the team wants to go through a slower rebuild.
3 - You can also retain a good portion of his salary while trading him for solid assets IF PLD is a malcontent liability to meet said cap floor wants again (most likely scenario)
As for exit strategy #3, it's basically what Nashville has done retaining half of Johansen's cap space until next season...not to mention the Duchene buyout hit assuring team meets cap floor. Just unfortunate they didn't cover half of #14's cap hit to meet said cap floor as well :(
Antithesis of the Caps? I'd have to say it's the Kings. This is a franchise that needed a slower rebuild after the 2018-2019 season though Doughty was NOT ok with that. He wasn't willing to relocate to join another contender while pro-actively pressuring Blake/Robitaille to "speed up the rebuild." I still think Anze is a guy who would've been ok with a more gradual retool done properly but not Doughty.

DeMelo just extended 4x4.9M to stay in Winnipeg. Geez. Broberg-Demelo would probably be a way better 2nd pair than what we just dealt with all playoffs for the cost of ~6M.
Lots of fish in the sea still of course. Hockey god prayers for the next GM.

Get a Sabres Captain or assistant captain this summer. Whatever it takes
AJ Feldman @AJFeldmanTV
It's truly amazing that:
A) The Sabres have missed the playoffs 13 straight years, a 1 in 18,808 statistical improbability.
B) During the drought, they traded their captain/alternate (de facto) captain 3 times, with all 3 winning the Cup by their first full season's end.

So you're saying we need to acquire whoever Buffalo's current captain is for next year.
Problem solved.

Looks like Avs with Mittlestadt are next in line for that lucky Cup bounce then if we're referring to former Sabres talent (not necessarily an A or C tho).

Dakota Joshua signs a four-year extension with #canucks carrying a $3.25M AAV.
Kassian 2.0? Did nothing until a magic 21.4% shooting season at 28.
keep it up Canucks! Zadorov 7M AAV please!

Amazing exchange on Zadorov the other day. A Canucklehead reporter tweeted out that significant progress is being made in the Zadorov and Lindholm contract discussions and then Zadorov's agent fired back with the two word tweet "Fake news!"

Acquiring Tanev’s rights from Dallas gives Toronto the option of going to max 8 year term. Sounds crazy, but a longer team helps lure players from more tax friendly markets and lowers the AAV. Tanev is likely to sign in 5-8 yr range.
Lol Treliving. Tanev turning 35 in December. Gio and Tanev reunited.

-Someone told me that the "8 year option" is only available for players that arrive before the trade deadline at minimum while the max would be 7 years. Not sure who's right/wrong in this situation though.
-I found that offer Stamkos received from Tampa interesting. On one hand, yeah you can spend the last 4 years of that contract on LTIR technically speaking....but it also makes it harder to "officially" take on advisory roles in coaching/management or work for the league. I imagine that's why he rejected that contract.
-I find it funny how Joe Pavelski has sold his house in Dallas while looking to move back to Wisconsin. He kept refusing to use the word "retirement" but just blatantly dismissed everything as "it's time." I get a feeling he'll come back midseason next year with another contender.
-I get an odd feeling the Bruins might go after Sam Reinhart while Florida will try to replace him with a Flames reunion piece being Lindholm at a lower amount that CGY/Van offered...that'd be hilarious.
-Things are about to get testy between Trouba and Drury. I believe Trouba's 15 team no trade list is due at midnight and with rumors swirling around about how Detroit wants him, it seems as if he might try to add the Wings to that list. Drury can just go around that by trading Trouba to another bottom feeder. What's ironic is Trouba kept blabbering about how he wanted to go back home to Michigan while in Winnipeg & now doesn't want to move back home haha.
-Speaking of Drury, the Barclay Goodrow move was hilarious. Dude had a no trade clause and Mike Grier who needed to meet the cap floor had a handshake agreement with his former college/Buffalo Sabres teammate to take Goodrow. That's one way to circumvent the system but makes me wonder how every Harry/Dick/Tom player will now ask for NMCs instead on all of their contracts moving forward.

Kane with his $115M career earnings still squeezing every penny he can. Zero interest in another cup
Elliotte Friedman @FriedgeHNIC
Kane contract has bonuses. Per sources:
$4M base
$1.5M at 10 games
$250k at 60 games
$500k if they make playoffs
$250k for 60 points AND playoffs.
Total is $6.5M

Dang, Nashville really going all in right now. Stamkos, Skjei, and Marchessault. Stamkos as $8M over 4 years seems like like a solid deal, even at age 34. He'll regress, but the cap is going up now.

Anyone else get the feeling that Vancouver signing Debrusk who has continuously been linked to the Oilers, and now Vinny too is kind of a butt-hurt move from them?
I feel like their game plan was just to screw with the Oilers lol.

As much as I like(d) Debrusk, I think they'll regret that contract.
And way over pay for Vinny too.

Can even package his on/off partner being Cody Ceci in the deal as well

That Gavin McKenna kid looks pretty damned good. 2 years of Ceci and Nurse sure would help your chances of getting that lotto pick in 2026!!!

Heck the Ducks are one of 6 NHL teams without a captain now too. Maybe they can trade for a "prospective captain" on their blue line with term on his contract while helping them meet the cap floor for the next 6 seasons too. Sounds like real leadership to me right there!

OEL is the king of the NHL. He's made this league his b&$#$
Brian Costello @bcostellothn
Oliver Ekman-Larsson will make money from three teams next season and in November or so will be presented a Stanley Cup ring from a fourth team.
He’s on the books for almost $9 million from three teams in each of 2025-26 and 2026-27

Missed that Monahan went into hiding in Columbus with "Johnny Regular Season Hockey".

They can't underwhelm in the playoffs if they don't even make them in the first place....

Leafs are gonna try the San Jose Sharks method of trying to win. Moving the C off JT's jersey and putting it on Matthews'.
I predict it works out about the same as it did for the Sharks. Maybe less playoff wins though. When they give the C to Marner and hire DeBoer, perhaps a conference finals loss could happen.

Askarov wants out of Nashville.
https://thehockeynews.com/nhl/nashville-predators/latest-new s/askarov-requests-trade-nashville-predators-have-small-wind ow-to-make-a-deal
I think a Skinner-Askarov tandem would have the potential to be awesome. Run a tandem and have injury/brain fart protection in the playoffs.
I believe having a tandem is and will be the way to go. I think the days of 70+GP goalies are over. Last one was Talbot in 16-17 with 73. Since then the high has been 67.
From 2000-2012, there was an average of 4 goalies every year with over 70GP. Average of 9 every year with 65+GP, 13 with 60+GP
In the last 5 full years, 0 with 70GP, an average if less than 2 per year with 65+, and 7 with 60+.
