Per TSN. I don't know much about Josh Brown, but since he is a big #7 defender this would seem like a replacement for Vinny Desharnais. Weird they would sign him for 3 years though, maybe he got an extra year to get the money down.
Edit: Feedback from my former Coyotes fan friend when I asked if Brown is any good "not really. He was the Yotes 7D most of last season on a weak blueline. Good on hum for getting a 3 year deal though. He can be ok on a sheltered third pair but he's not going to really do anything".
Vinny must be getting upwards to $2M from someone out there then.

He beat McDavid in the 2015 OHL finals, so he can't be that bad
Contract can be buried, but yeah, no idea why we have to go 3 years for a 30 year old that is below replacement level.

Derek Ryan's 900K can also be buried.. so they could technically add another 900K to Oiler cap

A message from someone who watched a lot of ARI games last season: "He's just an awful player."
Maybe that changes on a better team in EDM.

The interesting thing is that Brown got more than Carrick or Stecher, so theoretically, that would suggest the Oilers think he's the first man up.
Certainly, all the stats and analysis suggest he's just terrible and shouldn't be in that role, although some of the Oilers-controlled pundits have suggested the pro scouts love that guy...

Gotta be something in this player that people in our org like. No one can see what it might be. His career has been a struggle, his stats are bad any way you look at them.
Guess at the least it's a bet worth keeping an eye on how it turns out.

My hope is if Stecher and/or Carrick outplay him, they see the cap savings by having them here and Brown in the AHL. Easy way to gain 200,000 of space.

I swear, if I had to guess this persons name from the picture. I might have actually come up with Josh Brown

Come on Joshie, show us you are a hidden gem and that we are currently run by geniuses.

I remember when Vinnie Desharnais was considered a lost cause.. maybe Sruart and Coffee can coach him up tp at ;east Desharnais level.. Vinnie doesn't have much for skating.. but his reach and stride allows him to break up plays & cycles.. see what happens.. Oilers have some serious analytics guys these days and targeted him.. could be for a reason.. ?
He's a better scrapper than Vinnie.. :)

He's 30 years old so about 4-5 years older than Desharnais was at the point where he was a total project. Not a lot of players with a real positive development curve after 30.
I suspect the Oilers like that he can fight too...although it's not a skill that comes in real handy often any more, and if I have to have someone on the team fighting, I prefer it's a forward as it's less disruptive to just not play the fourth line for 5 minutes than to try to rotate just 5 defencemen.
