Just checking in, I'm so happy for the Oilers and my fellow long term (and newer) Oilfans to get to see another chance at the Stanley Cup!

Why not? I see no reason why this can't happen. Win the cup at home.

Let me be the first to post an interesting fact about this series. Almost exactly 10 years after being the top four picks in the 2014 draft, Aaron Ekblad, Sam Reinhart, Leon Draisaitl, and Sam Bennett will now all participate in the 2024 Stanley Cup Final.
Bet that's never happened before.

The Elks' season opener against the Riders was scheduled for Saturday, 5pm at Commonwealth Stadium. Glad to see the team being proactive--they've already rescheduled the game to start at 2pm to avoid overlap with game 1 of the SCF.
Now if they were really smart they would invite fans to stay after the football game and watch game 1 on the big screen in Commonwealth--could be a hell of a fun double header. (although I'm not sure if they are allowed to do that as there's never been a lot of cooperation between the two teams).

The Trappers used to do this way back when. Game time @7:05 unless the Oilers are playing then it's 2:05.
Going down onto the turf at Commonwealth with a lawn chair, sixer, and a way to get hot dogs in me would be a pretty alright Saturday night.

I may not sleep for the next two, two and a half weeks.
The wife twisted my rubber arm last night and convinced me to go to a game. So, I'm hoping the series goes 5! Any other Oilfans going to be going to any games down in FLA?

My wife said I should go - I was debating going down to Florida for games 1 and 2, but I think I'll go to Edmonton for game 4 instead. Maybe go and watch game 3 outside of Rogers Place.

I thought going to game one, was at game 6 last night with my son, which was amazing, but the tickets in Florida are more than Edmonton. So TV it is lol

Gonna take a break from doubting that Knob and this crew can pull off. Florida is a solid team, but so was Dallas. I think Maurice is a "motivator" type of coach, not particularly strong technically, so it's possible the Knob can find some openings.
Let's see where this goes. We have the best players still that can break any game open.

Anyone else wake up today with the biggest crap eating grin? I know I did.
Oilers in 6. I think Bobrovsky will be the third most difficult goaltender the Oilers will face along this run. Combine that with our new penchant for strong starts to games, and I think taking home the cup is a very realistic expectation here.
That 2006 feeling is back and life is good.

Bobo is a wildcard. Super streaky his whole career. His games vs Vegas last year: .879, .692, .926, .903, .742
He was red hot for rounds 2 and 3 last year, and then after a week off, was ice cold. Let's hope there is a repeat.

It also gives some of us based overseas to find that old friend called sleep... 4/5 hours sleep every other day has taken it's toll. This next week will be so refreshing.
I know I hate the idea of a week off, I'd rather we just got on with it, it does give all the players some time to rest up and get as close to 100% as they can be for the finals. Even more of a gripe is that they've given an extra day off for the travel days. That extends the finals further.
Looking forward to this series, that 06 run, though some time ago is still raw not only for what happened in the final, but the consequences of what happened the years after it. A win would go some way to rub that out of my mind.
Take me home, country road
to the place where I belong
to Alberta, to see the Oilers
take me home, country road

If anyone wants something to get mad about to keep in their pocket for now, Gregory Campbell is the assistant GM of the Panthers. Same Gregory, son of Colin, that was on the Bruins in 2011 when the Canucks suddenly could not get calls anymore with their diving and turned into crying rag dolls in the Finals :)

2006 was a distant memory.. I've mentioned how much things have changed since then and while I am much older the thought of the finals with the Oilers just makes me giddy.
Honestly I don't know what to expect LeBrun posted a thing on twitter saying he's interview 33 or so current NHL head coaches or NHL executives and they say out of the 33, only 4 think the Oilers will take it.
The entire hockey world thought that Dallas was going to eat the Oilers lunch, didn't happen. Local media say the Oilers are just more refined and can compete with anyone in the league, but you seem to find everyone saying it's going to go Florida's way.
I reserve my chicken little predictions until the 1st game is played before we see what we have, the Oilers do horribly after a few days off, so this week is going to be tense for them.
Man alive, the Oilers are in the finals.
*edit: it was 33 not 17

I read the Athletic article this morning, and it's even worse than that. It's 16/17 current NHL coaches think it's going to Florida, most in 6, the rest in 7.
Then, only 3 execs or scouts think the oilers will win.
That means 4/33 League professionals think the oilers will do it. Most cite Florida having been here last year and playing a heavy game.
Underdogs.

I am cool if people think the Oilers won't win. I am not sure the Oilers actually do well mentally for the most part when they are seen as the favorite. I take how they started this season when a ton of "experts" pick the Oilers to roll teams. I am of course bias so I am picking the Oilers but my reason is McDavid. He's the best player since Gretzky. He's been pretty good this playoff but up until game 6 he wasn't WOW. He was WOW in that first period. The Oilers in that game did a great job limiting Dallas's grade A's but they did sit back too much. I am sure they learned they can't that much as that game almost slipped through their fingers.
The true great players are often judged based on if they win or not. I think the Stanley Cup is the hardest trophy to win in pro sports. Yes you have to have a good team that your managers builds, yes you have to have a good coach but there is a lot of luck that needs to go your way. Luck in the games getting bounces and luck with injuries. A perfectly coached and perfectly built team can lose if the injury bug hits key guys at key times. I think McD will get more chances at the cup but I think he will play as if this is his only shot.

Moneypuck, which uses nothing but math to make its predictions has the Oilers as a very small favourite to win: 52.5% to 47.5%.

That's an interesting one! Florida has dominated possession 5v5 through the playoffs, and would expect them to get the thumbs up by more analytics models. However, looks like moneypuck does account for special teams quite a bit, which probably gives us a boost.
Do hope the refs aren't scared to make calls in the finals. Need the Knob to figure out some good strategies to counter the relentless Florida attack.

The refs are a really interesting storyline. Florida's kind of bullied their way through a lot of the first three rounds. They have so many dirtbag players. They have 207 penalty minutes so far, compared to 171 for the Oilers, 146 for the Rangers and just 92 for the Stars. Worth noting, that's slightly skewed by the fact that the Panthers and Bruins took a ton of misconducts against each other.
They've done a tremendous job on the kill at over 88%, but they haven't had to worry about a PP quite like the Oilers. Rangers were 24.0% in the playoffs, Bruins were 21.2%, and Lightning were 20.0%. Edmonton is humming along at 37.3%.
So does that mean they back off a little from that edge, in fear of the Oilers man advantage? Or do the refs just change the standard even more for the Finals and let full-scale mugging take place all over the ice?
Interesting looking at the stats, because the Panthers have almost two full minutes more of powerplay time than the Oilers through three rounds. Refs have called lots of penalties in their games, and relatively few in ours. The Oilers averaging the 13th most PP time/game in the post-season (although scoring on so many PPs might impact that number a bit too).
