Yeah baby!!!! Never a doubt!!!
Well - we got ourselves a goalie win boys! This W is all Skinner. He plays like that in the finals, that’s a Cup.

Something I never thought I would see again in my lifetime is within the sights of the Oil, and unlike 2006 they didn’t sneak in. I’m giving huge credit to Coach Knob for their ability to get this far.

This is the feel good positive of this sketchy game. The confidence boost it gives Skinner.
I won’t lie. I didn’t think this team would make the final. Not a chance. There were some stacked teams this spring. But I now believe they belong here.

Legit probably the best day of my life. (Marrying my wife is up there), but her being literally on death's door, then her a week or so later actually being able to watch us secure a finals spot?)
I'm not even sure that a cup win will top that, but let's find out!

I was in the building tonight and it was the ugliest win I've ever seen live. Just dreadful. I'd have loved to see a little more killer instinct, because one more goal at any point probably breaks the will of the Stars a little...
All that said - WE WON!!!! STANLEY CUP FINALS HERE WE COME!!!
Panthers are another extremely deep team - I forgot until this week that they'd also added Tarasenko at the trade deadline. They're going to be tough, but our best players are better than their best players. It'll be fun - although I'm going all grey by the end of this...

18 years since they last made it to the final, 34 years since they last won the Cup- can this be the year? I’m shaking here….
P.S.: How many of us here were alive when the 1990 Oilers hoisted the Cup? There are likely a few people who have never seen it in this forum. It would be great if they could actually witness it themselves…

Yeah, I'm lucky enough to really remember 88 & 90 pretty clearly, 87 a big vaguely.
I vividly remember Erin from on here selling me a ticket to Game 3 of the 2006 finals, and me driving 140 km/h or faster from Calgary to get to the game with 20 minutes to spare.
Enjoy the memories, y'all!

I remember the cup wins, way fewer hockey fans in the UK then, and very few following the NHL (thank goodness for Canadian relatives).
Was around here for the 06 cup run, seemingly remember suggesting we had to change the old header if we won as we'd need another cup in the picture.
As for tonight, they made it difficult for themselves, we've proven that we can sit back and defend a lead, but it shouldn't be default, McDavid said it himself in the post game we only really played in the first period.
It's a week off, rest the bodies and head for Florida and for some of us, it's a week of going to bed at normal times rather than 7 or 8pm to get up at 1am.
Take me home, country road
to the place where I belong

Been an Oiler fan since seeing my first game in 1973 with my dad. Was a Habs fan (NHL anyway) at the time but since 1979 all Oil all the way! This team reminds me of the glory days teams mostly offence during the regular season then somehow suddently a defensive team when needed in the playoffs (NHL tried to manage games vs the Bruins (especially) to take the cup away).
Remember walking into the old Coliseum when it was new (Miles for Millions took me there :-) )
- it was awesome at the time (I was 9). The Oilers sustained me during some tough times (my mom died that year)... Kevin Lowe (the manager) - curse his name - the decade of darkness doesn't happen without him. This is so special after the start to the year... I never really gave up, the had many doubts during the year and during the Nucks series... Knobs was a good choice!

I’m a ‘76er. Lifetime fan. I remember watching our first Cup on a black a white 13 inch tv that needed rabbit ears and no wing to get good reception. Obviously I remember 1990 the best of our Cups, but 2006 stung.
Let’s effin do this. I’m taking time off to travel to Edmonton. Not sure if I’ll have seats but I’ll be there to take it all in.
Life is great!

The conference trophy (I think it’s still called the Campbell Trophy). It’s tradition for conference winners to never touch that trophy as the only one that matters comes up in the final.

Interesting fact: the tradition of conference winners not touching their trophies started after 1990, as Messier did hold the Campbell Trophy when they were presented with it after beating the Hawks on the way to Cup number five.

Born three days before Gretz was traded… I missed out on the dominance of the Oil way back when. 06 was a treat. McDavid lottery was a treat. Now we get this? I want more. LMG!!! Pants launched to Toronto at that final buzzer!

Perry in the finals with 5 different teams is a record apparently.
He is 1/4 striking out in the last 3. I think he is due. Let's make it 2/5.

Yep let's turn the Florida Panthers into the Buffalo Bills of the NHL....
As for the game, Oilers seemed nervous AF...thankful for those PP goals in the 1st as they seemed "caught up in the moment" during majority of the game.
I hope they'd be better mentally equipped for the Finals now.

Media guys already starting to try to lionize Ken Holland for his role here, rather than rightly credit the players for overcoming bad management to reach the Finals. Here's Gord Miller sucking up, not JUST to Holland, but also to Peter Chiarelli:
Quote: | Gord Miller 🌻🇺🇦
@GMillerTSN
As Edmonton advances to the Stanley Cup Final, Oiler GM Ken Holland is deservedly getting credit for his excellent moves (signing Zach Hyman, trading for Mattias Ekholm, the early season coaching change) but his much-maligned predecessor Peter Chiarelli deserves credit as well.
...
Some of Chiarelli’s moves that paid off? His management group drafted Evan Bouchard (1st rd, 10th overall 2018), Stuart Skinner (3rd rd, 78th overall 2017) and he signed Leon Draisaitl to an 8 year, $8.5m extension, a great contract that was widely criticized at the time.
...
Chiarelli’s administration made mistakes, as has Holland’s, which has made several moves it would like back, but every franchise has contracts it would like to get out of and trades it would like to undo. It’s tough to predict future performance and there’s an element of luck.
...
Holland has been beaten up at times in Edmonton, but his Hall of Fame credentials remain intact, the Oilers are a much better team now than they were when he took over five years ago. He’d be the first one to say that some of the key pieces were put in place by Peter Chiarelli.
...
In the two years before Holland took over, the Oilers finished 23rd and 28th overall. Since then, they’ve made the playoffs every year, have won 6 series, have been to the conference final twice and are about to play in the Stanley Cup Final for the first time in 18 years.
|
And hey, some of what he says is correct. The Oilers were out of the playoffs when the team sacked Chiarelli (who holds huge responsibility for the terrible finish to 2018 and 2019). And Holland DID add Ekholm and Hyman who are both big contributors.
But this team should have been competitive in most of the last 5 years, and Holland's moves were a big part of the reason that they have not been. Even this year, he fumbled again and again and to look at just the trade deadline alone you can see the difference:
Vancouver Canucks:
Elias Lindholm (Kuzmenko, 2 prospects & 1st rd pick)
Nikita Zadorov (5th rd pick)
Dallas Stars:
Chris Tanev (prospect & 2nd rd pick)
Florida Panthers:
Vlad Tarasenko (Conditional 4th rd pick)
Kyle Okposo (7th & borderline prospect)
Edmonton Oilers:
Adam Henrique (1st round pick)
Sam Carrick
Troy Stecher (4th rd pick)
We paid more, to get less than other teams we're facing. And Henrique has been fine...I don't have any real complaint with the player, but it's not like Holland did everything that could be done to give us the best chance to win this year.
If we win the Cup, it's on McDavid, Draisaitl, Bouchard, Nuge, Skinner, etc. Holland's share of the credit should be minimal and certainly he shouldn't be held up as some amazing builder here...he's been overall bad.
Miller was clearly perplexed to find himself assailed by Oilers fans with no love for Holland after his message...people didn't even bother to comment on Panicky Pete Chiarelli...
