Stuart Skinner has allowed 12 goals in the first 3 games of the 2nd Round Series vs Canucks.

7 of the 12 have been on low-quality shot attempts on net (less than 5% goal probability at time of release).

It’s almost as though he’s just not it. Dude was drafted in 2017, 2017!!! He’s not a spring chicken. Worked his was from the ECHL, to the AHL… finally getting to the NHL. Quite the ride. Quite the MUSTache. The numbers he’s put up now in 2 playoffs are not inspiring. Mike Smith with 1 good hip looked more agile than him. He’s a bigger goalie that plays small, he’s Darnell Nurse in goalie form.

All the Oilers need is average goaltending and he, again, is showing he just can’t rise to that expectation. Yes, this coming from a guy sitting behind a keyboard. Would love for him to prove me wrong. I just… don’t see it.

Skinner's success will be directly proportional to how easy we can make the night for him with our defensive play. Would be the similar for Pickard too. Gotta limit good chances to near zero. These guys are probably interchangeable at this point. Difference will be which goalie could inspire this team to put in more of an honest defensive effort. We know how our team just starts to crumble and demotivate when we see the our goalie letting in trash over and over.

I agree.. Oilers just need "reliable" goaltending right now.. not "hero" goal tending.. When low chance goals start going in it changes the skaters mind set.. like.. defence just think about; get the puck OUT.. dump it.. ice it.. forwards start laying back.. give up zone entry.. all because they fear any shot can go in..

Watching other goaltenders in the playoffs right now.. they seem to get across the crease really fast.. and react to the puck/shot quickly.. high mobility and quick reflex.. Stuart seems to rely more on position.. less mobile.. maybe he needs lighter pads.. or a new goalie coach.

That being said.. the Oilers as a whole don't seem to block a lot of shots in a game.. I can see not shying away from it in the regular season.. but in a playoff game.. winning teams sacrifice everything for a victory..

Struddie has a term for it.. he calls it "fake shot blocking" .. some guys that go down but don't really come out to the shooter.. or get in the direct line of the shot.. look like they are trying to block but don't really want to take the hit.. which he hates..

Speaking of Darnell. When did he start to have the stick handling talent level of John Scott? Guy was just strange last night, clumsily carrying pucks and taking super wide turns struggling to bring the puck with him like he was an 18 wheeler on ice.

Working on stick skills used to be something he was pretty hardcore about. Seems like he took the last 2 summers off after getting his payday.

Yeah hard to believe this is the same guy I saw play in the OHL on the greyhounds.. he was their top PP guy and good at handling the puck.. skated circles around guys.. now he can barely make a pass and looks indecisive with the puck.. too often..

He hasn't seemed to have progressed up to the NHL level .. he's fast skating forward.. but agility is average.. his pivots are weak.. not quick .. he takes too long to get the long legs moving.. especially as guys go past him.. sometimes even tangles them up.. he could probably fix it with some focused training.. and worst of all.. his physicality.. which was supposed to be his calling card .. is mediocre.. he loses a lot of puck and position battles.. doesn't tend to grease guys out like other better shutdown D in the league .. even his team mate Ekholm for example.. guy needs to acknowledge his weaknesses and get some coaching/training..

Seeing Zadorov turn from a pylon we used to own regularly into this total pain in the butt that is making his mark on every game is super annoying when I consider what we hoped Nurse would develop into.

I'm sure Nurse wants to be physical, but he uses every ounce of his brain power just trying to figure out what is happening around him. There is zero time left for him to do anything extra.

To be fair.. I'm starting to think Darnell isn't that strong.. comparatively.. he seems to lose more possession/position battles than he wins.. I thought by this point in his career Nurse would be Ekholm level in physicality and winning battles.

I remember early on thinking, “man, Darnell is going to be a BEAST when he fills out.” Problem is, he was a beanpole teenager who’s grown into a slender man. No longer able to hide under the developing defender guise, but I do think he could be a big part of the Oilers successes if he had a more capable stay at home partner who covered his shortfalls.

The above is ignoring the Gord awful cap hit, obviously.

Yeah I was thinking same thing.. wait until "man strength" Nurse, he'll be a freaking beast out there.. I hope this guy actually hits the gym in the summer.. work on the squats.. get a heavy under carriage (like Crosby.. he squats 500lbs) .. become unmovable.. we don't need a greyhound on D .. unless you are an offensive superstar (he's not).. guy needs a re-boot.. better skating/strength

.. I said the same thing about RNH as well.. wait until he breaks puberty and gets the man strength.. FF to today.. I think the guy shaves like once a month! :)

He can skate north/south in a straight line like the wind but his movement and mobility in the d-zone is terrible for an NHLer.

Maybe this happens to other players and I just don't notice it but he does this thing probably once a game where he is in front of the net and the puck goes to his corner and it's a 50/50 play with the other teams forward. Nurse will take a step towards the puck and then realising he can't get there in time just bails on the play completely - not move towards the guy to cut him off - just lets the forward go and get the puck completely uncontested while he stands in front of the net.

I don't know what happened to this guy. He's long past the top two d-man hopes that people once had, but even if he was just physical and played a reliable defensive game you could live with that but he's a liability on a lot of nights.

Not everyone has the mindset to want to improve when you already have generational wealth I guess.

.. only concern I have with starting Picard is he won't be mid-season Pickard.. he hasn't played a game for awhile.. can you afford to risk a game to find out? .. It will be an interesting decision..

Pickard had his best season since 2016-17 this year with a .909 save percentage, 2.45 GAA and a 12-7-1 record. but I think it's worth having a deeper look. First off, who did he play?

Playoff teams - Panthers, Hurricanes (in relief), Panthers, Stars, Maple Leafs (in relief), Stars, Avalanche (in relief)
Non-Playoff teams - Devils, Ducks, Devils, Blackhawks, Ducks Wild, Penguins, Blue Jackets, Penguins, Canadiens, Coyotes, Coyotes

For the playoff team starts, he was 1-3 with 5, 5, 3, and 5 goals allowed. In the non-playoff starts, he was 11-4-1 so he's playing the classic back-up goalie role, taking on and mopping up the easy games. When he's asked to step up against good teams, he's averaging 4.5 GA per game. It's a really small sample size, so if this was our only data point on Pickard it might be worth throwing away, but given that he has about 10 years of showing us he's not an NHL starter, I think it shouldn't be ignored. From that, I think that the bounceback is more about who he's played than it is him somehow taking a big jump forward from where he was. And given that, I don't trust him to save our season.

I am struggling with Skinner, but we made that bet last summer and we declined to bolster at any point so there's not a lot of options now. Just pray that he recovers his January form for a few weeks...
