Perkele wrote on Wed, 06 March 2024 11:06 | Rumour out there (I think from Kevin Weeks) that the Avalanche are trading Byram for Casey Middelstadt of the Sabres. I obviously don't follow either of these two players too closely but being in southern Ontario I get more Sabres info than I care for. That said, if it is a one for one deal it seems like the Avalanche are getting fleeced here. Middelstadt is an average at best player who is a bottom 6 player at best (and seems to have a history of lackluster effort at times). Byram still projects as a top pairing Dman I think. Sabres will be very good on the back end with Dahlin, Power and Byram.

Full trade, per sources:
To #Flyers: Cond. 2025 1st Rd Pick, Ryan Johansen
To #GoAvsGo: Sean Walker, 2026 5th Rd Pick
Condition: 2025 1st is Top 10 protected, in which case it would slide to 2026.

There is salary retention involved, as well as a third party broker. Some moving parts to this one.

Still haven't seen that last bit confirmed. Would be good if it was...depending on whether it's just a deep pick traded for it.

I think Henrique will be a good add, regular 20 goal scorer.. and plays on Ducks top PK unit..
.. as for Carrick I have little memory of him.. supposed to have good speed, truculent, and plays Ducks top PK unit..

I think Carrick is an upgrade on Ryan who is their 4th line C now. Carrick is bigger, faster, more physical, more of an agitator. He's a right shot, over 50% on draws, plays on your PK, can chip in a small amount of offense but not a ton. Ryan has 5 goals, Carrick has 8.

“A defenceman is now the priority for the Oilers. A veteran No. 7 guy appears to be the most likely outcome.
Holland mentioned Gagner and Broberg as recall options. Erne and Hamblin (once back up and running) are others.”
Brutal deadline if the big move is a 34 year old middle 6 center.

Here's hoping it's not a 7th defenceman. If it's a guy who can't push either of Desharnais or Ceci out of the lineup, that's not a very good player.

Well it’s even in a quote now…

I like the six they have too... I'm just concerned what happens if they aren't the first team in history to never suffer a defensive injury all season and playoffs. Now, I'm not sure that's a Stanley Cup winning D Corp, but I guess we're going to find out.

What a terribly disappointing quote. It seemed like our biggest needs was a backup goalie and an upgrade at RD and in the last week Holland has quotes saying he has no plan to try to do either. I guess it is possible that the oilers have finally learned not to tip their hand, but I think it is far more likely that they remain bumbling and honest

As the Flames/Knights finalize the Hanifin trade, word out of Vegas suggests they aren't necessarily finished. Could still add another forward by the deadline.
I wonder if Katz is flipping his s&%(# while he watches this stuff. So frustrating. Just give Vegas Guentzel too. Eichel can have a little recovery setback and LTIR to game 1 with Stone.

Rental as well..
Lindholm really trailed off after the trade.. buyers remorse.. I doubt Pittsburgh would be satisfied with Lindholm as the piece coming back who is UFA also.. why would Pittsburgh take a rental who will want the moon next year?

You have to appreciate the boldness of Vegas. A spleen injury can be pretty short term to be fully recovered. But they are just all in acting like Stone will be out until game 1. The confidence, the shamelessness, the BOLDness! MacT would be proud.

Jesus. What's it gonna take to close that loophole? Our allstar players guaranteed us a playoff spot, but oops, they all got injured right before the playoffs (weird hey?) Oh, but that gives us another $30m in cap space, so we're just gonna sign all tbe top FAs with that 30m "cap space", and then bring our "injured" guys back just in time for the playoffs once they miraculously recover from all their injuries.
It boggles my mind that the NHL can't see this obvious case of cap circumvention. It is so easy to fix too: Your playoff roster must comply with the salary cap. What's so hard about that?
Vegas got away with it once already. You're gonna let them do it again? The officiating in the NHL is already bush league. Now you're gonna extend that to the salary cap? What a joke of a league.
You're godd amn right that I'm pissed about this.

Oh, but that gives us another $30m in cap space, so we're just gonna sign all tbe top FAs with that 30m "cap space", and then bring our "injured" guys back just in time for the playoffs once they miraculously recover from all their injuries.

They see it. Choose not to do anything about it.
I highly suspect that if the Oilers were pulling this year after year.. after year.. they'd require 3 independent NHL physicians to verify the injury.. or make the LTIR player ineligible until the 2nd round.. then take away two 2nd round Oiler draft picks .. naturally.. :)

Talk that Oilers will go after a depth 6-7 D-man with what cap they have left..
One of the guys mentioned was Josh Brown on the Coyutes..
6'-5", 220#
His defensive numbers look good.. been pulling about 12 minutes per game.. and.. shoots right..
Cap hit is $1.275M.. would need retention.. or a trade out..

Stauffer was teasing this guy as a potential 7th D add

Chances he scores a goal before our current Brown? Thinking 80%.

The Oilers just sent Holloway down. With 14 forwards after the Henrique - Carrick traded, they had 14 forwards. With him going down, that's another 925k in cap space.
They can let him play a ton in Baker then bring him up for the playoffs when there is no cap.
Hmmmmmm. Interesting.

Another Trade? [ 8 vote(s) ] |
1. | Trade a non-roster player/picks for depth player | 0 / 0% | 2. | Trade a roster player+picks for impact player | 6 / 75% | 3. | Nada | 2 / 25% |
Oilers still have $1M in cap left..

I've said it before. All the NHL would have to do is make it so the team that steps on the ice for each playoff game is cap compliant. No different than what it's like for the regular season.
Teams can load up on all the expensive guys they want to be black aces and have them not count against the cap. So in the case of Vegas, you got all this LTIR space, go ahead, load up. But the team on the ice has to be under the cap. How you do it is up to the team. If you want to play 9 forwards and 6 d to be cap compliant, go ahead.

Poor Stone, Feb just a bad luck month for him. Wonder what happens to him next Feb. Maybe some really bad eczema that lasts until April?
|
Heck of a sales job by Vegas - come play in the desert, we'll pay you a full season's salary for 3/4 of a season's work and then we'll load up to the gills on talent to try to win you another Cup ring!

Fingers crossed that the Knights continue to flounder leading up to the playoffs. As long as they settle into a Wildcard spot,, (#goKings), they'll be up against the Canucks, Stars or Jets. Each of these teams have made some serious adds!
What a 1st round matchup that would be!
