They need to pick up the compete level, they need to play desperate and they need to protect the front of their goal way better. Other teams make it hard for the Oilers to get to the front of the net and in the slot and they do it without guys who will be all stars. It's just flat out a decision by the players to play defense and battle hard. Pretty simple.

53% of us picked the Oilers to win in Minny, wow we're really homers.

Even this was 53%. The way the Oilers are playing it should be like 10%. Although even bad teams win.

Need to learn how to play a complete game and defense......... oh and a goalie save now and then would be nice.

This is gut check time. The team is totally capable of winning this game if they are 100% committed to defense. Their season may well be decided in the first quarter of the schedule. Now is the time to show what they are made of. Good luck boys.

I'm not sure this is true. Even at full strength, full intensity, full try, full effort, the Oilers defense is a 2005 Honda Civic whose owner only hopes it'll start every time.

I drove my '97 civic until 3 years ago then some dirtbag stole it. Started every time, best car I ever had!

I sold my '05 civic a few years ago. I regret it. I should have said *quick google* jeep wrangler.

Everyone said they were contenders, so they decided to start the season like the 2019 St. Louis Blues. Not my favouite strategy.

Foegele-RNH-Hyman
Holloway-McLeod-Brown
Erne-Ryan

Nurse-Ceci
Ekholm-Broberg
Kulak-Bouchard/Desharnais

Skinner
Campbel

They finally dropped Bouchard down. I get giving him time to hopefully work through his struggles but he's gotten worse as each game pass. Hopefully a little less playing time will help him reset.

If they're running 7 D there's really no reason not to feed him a diet of exclusive offensive zone starts and PP.

I still don't trust that top 4

2nd line somehow being driven by Foegele and Nuge is completely lost. Near 0 chance Foegele can keep it up long term. 1st line is an abomination with Drai and 2 boat anchors.

Someone was paid $25,000,000 and given 5 years to make this roster. Just a reminder.

It is funny, for sure :)

but also sad. I mean, wasting the career of a once in a decade player, and the owner paying probably $100M so far to a bunch of dopes to do it ... it is pretty unfortunate.

You bet. Might as well start selling off now. Get what you can now while they still have value. Burn it down. Start over. Waive who you can, call up as many from Bako as you can. Go for last. We are done.

Good point. Probably best to forfeit the season. That way all the players are 100% healthy so you get full value. Plus it lets you fire everyone right now. All you need is a few people to answer the phones and pay the bills.

Or Should they just fire the secretaries as well. Something has to be their fault. So fire them too.

You say that like it hasn't been done already.

Don't panic RDO, it's only 6 games into the season. The defense and goaltending might still fix itself. Who knows, maybe they'll get lucky with some injuries.

Nope. They missed the window. Any Draisaitl trade now will be a panic trade driven by results or contracts and therefore return pennies on the dollar. I'd rather they roll the dice for the next two seasons, flawed as they are, rather than panic.

Thanks for clarifying. It was a few months ago so I couldn't remember totally what you said and I didn't want to search through pages and pages of comments.

Might be the time don't you think?

Nope. They missed the window. Any Draisaitl trade now will be a panic trade driven by results or contracts and therefore return pennies on the dollar. I'd rather they roll the dice for the next two seasons, flawed as they are, rather than panic.

Wow, crazy. I had no idea the window to make moves like that was so small. Teams literally have a mere couple of weeks to decide the fate of their entire franchise for years to come. I guess they are screwed now.

You ever think of applying to the Oilers for an advisory job? Maybe Jackson will hire you to be his right hand. That's assuming you think he shouldn't be fired as well?

Should they start shopping McDavid right now or wait until the offseason? He'd have 2 years left so surely someone would take him.

The positivity is just oozing out now!

Who knew 5 years was just a short little window!

Honestly, the Oilers don't pay well enough for people like me.

But yes, the windows are that tight to make decisions. There are very few points in the year where money, assets, time, and attention are all available to find good value. Especially in a zero sum situation like NHL hockey. No one is out there waiting to give the Oilers a favor when they're trying to win a cup. They are stuck with what they have now, hoping for the best. Maybe they can get creative and load up at the deadline, but that feels like some slim hope.

You never give up on a McDavid.

We still have 2 of the best in the game. Crazy things have happened in hockey. That is where the hope can derive from, for anyone that needs a little.

Can still call out management for what they have been, terrible, complete waste of money. They make the wall our top players have to climb to get close to a cup as high as any management team in the league could have. Here were are, cheering on McDrai to climb! CLIMB BOYS! Climb that wall our terrible management put in your way!!! please don't leave in 1-2 years :(

Sorry for the earlier spam post - this replaces it. I've been having trouble posting sometimes lately, with an error message popping up. I've been trying to decide if it's an issue with the site or with my employer's web defences.

With regards to management, I don't know why anyone would look at Holland's time here with anything but a critical eye. He's literally been the highest paid GM in the league, and had the best player and another that's in the top 5 and he's completely failed to build around them. He's been good at providing excuses - his predecessor's mistakes took a long time to disappear, he didn't think the team was ready to "go for it", "what do you want me to do, get him for nothing?", he really thought the cap was going to just go up and when it didn't his hands were tied...

The goaltending is no better than when he arrived, and the stats suggest it's actually worse:

One stat that really stands out in this early season
@EdmontonOilers
disaster:

* EDM is 11th in preventing high-danger shot attempts (5v5)
* EDM is 32nd(!) in high-danger save% with Skinner and Campbell combining for an unfathomable .605 sv% -- the only team under .700

Defence and depth remain weak spots. Really, the top end forwards on the team are the only thing that is a real strength, and the most important guys are the ones we already had. If you want to congratulate him for Hyman and Ekholm, and to a lesser extent Kane, well, fair enough - although it's been five years. FIVE YEARS. If that's the sum total of the positives? Maybe that's what is actually making RDOF blue.

I will say though, I highly doubt RDOF has ever been "feeling too positive" other than maybe when he's gloating about departed players who are having any kind of career issues.

You too man! Hopefully we see some wins soon, eh? Apropos of nothing, who's the top ranked draft eligible for 2024?

Speaking of this. I can't get on the site using chrome browser on my phone anymore. I get a "Forbidden" message. But it works with Samsung browser on my phone.

On my desktop, works fine with Chrome and other browsers. Might be some compatibility issue? Started a couple weeks ago.

I get the forbidden message on my desktop chrome. Took me a few days to realize whole site wasn't down. Had to download firefox. Works there.

Imagine how grumpy Oilers fans might get if there are 60,000 of them drunk and cold in Commonwealth Sunday riding a disaster of a start and Connor isn't playing.
