Bouchard is amazing on D. Just a wizard.

This is such an Oilers start to the game, and the season. So much for the awesome defensive strategy.

I think we'll be glad they never gave him an 8 x 8 contract..

Bouch will be alright boys. Assist now. Only out for 1 goal when he was left on the boards in a 2 on 1 battle while Nurse and the airheads were playing "zone defense".

Without Ekholm that D looks amateurish.. Bouch and Nurse both aren't good at defense.. I thought it might be a costly pairing.. hoped for better.. like an improved Bouchard.. Bouch doesn't look any more decisive with the puck this year.. and/or quicker moving the puck.. coughed up a puck on a slow-mo back pass to 97 on the PP.. and didn't even register with him it might be a dangerous move.. puck awareness seems low.

Bouch is gonna be very similar to a guy like Carlson. Never gonna be that good defensively. His value will be moving the puck up and making good breakout passes and dominating on the PP. He needs a solid D partner. It is what it is. Guys like Bouch are harder to get than a D that can play solid heads up D though. Holland just kinda sucks at finding those guys and we are capped out.

I hate being negative on night 1… but that said, not sure why we expect anything different this year when they are running it back with pretty well the identical squad to last season.

No Ekholm is a gaping hole on D.

Nothing changed roster wise from last season, so I’m super puzzled at all the predictions that were Cup favourites. We’re still vulnerable to any team that knows how to grind us and capitalize on our mistakes.

Bouch's last 1/3 of last season, adding Ekholm and Skinner's regular season stats gave us the boost in most analytics models.

It is the same as the team that finishes last playoffs, but definitely looks better on paper vs the one that started last year that was already ranked pretty high. Hard to score low when you start with McDavid and Drai.

Absolutely. Ekholm is sorely missed back there.

A lot of guys standing around out there, not really instilling a lot of confidence in this new "system" they'll be using this year.

I'm not going to say I'm surprised though... in the preseason, Bouchard was a huge defensive liability. I thought maybe it might be him just easing into the season and making the odd error here and there... but no, this is just Evan's game. Can do some amazing things on the attack, but he's a nightmare on D.

This team is playing like they spent the last week reading how they are a cup favorite. Such classic Oilers. Max fancy pants PP to start off trying to force every play. Some lazy brain-dead defending.

What does it mean for Bouch's bargaining position if, when paired with 9.25M Nurse, Nurse looks as clueless, if not more, defensively but Bouch also outscores him by 20-30 points?

Such a gross pair

This is inexcusable garbage.

For a team that is supposed to look like they are contending this year, presently they look like they are going to replace the Blackhawks and the Coyotes at the bottom of the league.

Nice effort boys. Super awesome effort.

Jack is back! Worked so hard on his game this summer!

It feels like 60% of this game has been in the Canucks zone but the Oilers failing to get great chances and failing to score when they do and the Canucks scoring every time they have a sniff.

Need a big comeback here.

So few options now to free up space and add a good goalie. Barrie was an easy move with Bouch waiting.

LOLOL. Skinner comes in and gives up a goal. This game will need to be remembered for just how badly it went.

This team thought they were going to be hockey gods this year. What a wake up call this one is.

Doesn't seem like the early season captain's practices have helped.. maybe only McD was doing any skating?

I was almost thinking of buying a row 8 ticket to this game.. but had a bad feeling.. glad I acknowledged it.

Oilers have controlled the play for large sections of this game but they haven’t got any saves. They’re also not getting enough pucks on net. Frustrating though when every chance against is in the back of the net.

We can’t be real contenders for the Cup with no goalies.

The Knights won the Cup with a pair of scrubs. It can be done if other areas of the team like the D can be shored up…

People have been talking about this for a decade.

This is classic Oilers. Lots of chances but we defeat ourselves on most of them with trash shots and still get covered and boxed out really well. Then we allow the other team to get wide open chances with zero coverage to put the puck wherever they want.

Our defending has been embarassing. If the Canucks defended like us we would have 5 goals easy.

Just not many team defend like us. They make sure their lineup has D that can defend.

No Cups

I think it would be a good idea for the Oilers to have plan C and D goaltending this year.

Have to agree, goaltending and defense are definitely not the Oilers strong suit. I don't know what the brain-trust, and I use that term loosely, were thinking not attempting to improve them.
