Say a prayer for people going up against McDavid in fantasy quarterfinals. It just ain't fair.
Please do not feed the bears. Feeding the bears creates a dependent population unable to survive on their own. Bears.

Skinner made the Key Saves when it mattered most.
For real though, our defensive breakdowns have been pretty bad. Still lots of work to do if we expect to make a playoff run.

It wasn't his best outing, either. I've been harping about blown d-zone coverage most games this year. You'd think they'd clean it up a bit, but here we are still.

Not a great game goaltending-wise for Edmonton. None of the goals were bad, but Skinner didn't make any great saves either. We outshot them badly, but they got the far-better performance.
That said, there were a lot of people in that camp. Other than Ekholm, I didn't think any defenceman stood out in a positive way. Worst game I've seen Desharnais and Broberg play. Everyone else made some glaring mistakes too.
Forwards would be on for one or two shifts, and then have several sloppy ones. We'd dominate and then we'd struggle to make two passes in a row. A game after looking finally like the guy from last year, Kane was particularly awful.
I thought Draisaitl was actually fine most of the night, and the passes from him were fan-freaking-tastic. The big three were all we had going for us last night. Thankfully it was enough.

Connor scores 60. DJ should have just not played the goal song and let the crowd chant his name and give a standing ovation.
Instead crowd is sleepy and the players leave the ice quickly.
|
Sportsnet also robbed the crowd. Great games for Keller, Draisaitl and Nugent-Hopkins, but McDavid won the game in overtime with his 2nd of the night and 60th of the season. Give him a star and let the fans chant like crazy. Huge number of people stuck around for the stars, and I thought it was a mistake not to give 97 the nod, even for just the third star!

I think that's four sloppy games in a row - Ottawa, Seattle, San Jose, Arizona. All ugly games, and all wins. It's great to get the points but the team has to settle some things down and play a better game if they're hoping to contend this year. Can't always out-score our problems! This one was a fun game to watch, but man - they need to be better than this if we're hoping for more than a cup of post-season coffee this year. We just don't have the goalies to play this sloppy.

You'd have thought that the Oilers had played last night how leggy they looked all game. No zip or energy, Leon looked shot to pieces and yet get's 4 assists.
I honestly thought I'd picked the wrong game to watch with this one, but you can always count on Connor.

I didn't catch the whole game, but for the parts I did, the guys seemed disinterested (except the PP).

Good job Bettman.
Half of the hockey continent likely didn’t watch the greatest player in the world reach 60 goals in dramatic fashion.

First off, the best player the NHL has seen since Gretzky scored his 60th in OT, and half the league's fanbase is in bed. NHL idiocy at its best.
Not all the team showed up, but enough guys did. Nuge was all over it, should have had 3 or 4. McDavid there to make sure it went the right way.
2 sides of Leon Draisatl, some excellent playmaking and abysmal d zone coverage. 2 sides of Bouchard with costly turnover, but some good keeps on the PP. Bottom 5 or 6 was quiet. Kane down the lineup because he didn't have it going much but Yamamoto didn't really play well either. Skinner looked off. Darnell Nurse playing flat out pretty poorly outside of OT goal last game right now. He needs to be much better.
The Oilers had enough guys come to play to win, but if this wasn't AZ they were playing, they're losers. Have to have much more from most of the lineup including Skinner on Saturday.

Fewest games to score 60 goals in a season - Salary Cap Era
Connor McDavid (2022-23) 72 (with his OT winner)
Auston Matthews (2021-22) 73
Alex Ovechkin (2007-08) 76
Steven Stamkos (2011-12) 82
Again, pretty solid pick by Chia

Do I really have to cheer for Calgary tonight?
Obligatory congrats to Connor. Now to push for Drai getting 50 goals again, and Nuge hitting 100 pts for the first time (who thought that was even a remote possibility going into this season?)

No. The Oilers control their destiny. Whether or not you cheer for Calgary tonight depends on if you want their fans being miserable or having false hope. I cho-cho-choose misery.

Wow - What a way to get to 60! We want 70!!!! And few highlight reel assists from Drai - fun to watch.
As many have said, sloppy game, but whatever, take the 2 points and clean it up for next game.

Also of note that McDavid got 60 goals before anyone else got 50. I'm guessing that hasn't happened for a while.
Not as impressive as Gretzky getting 50 before anyone else had 30, but still....

Leaf fans dive bombing in everywhere to remind everyone MAtthews scored 51 in 50.
I wonder how fast McDavid could have got to 50 if he didn't pass so much and try so hard to get Drai his 1-timers on the PP.
And friendly reminders, Matthews points = 71. McDavid assists = 78.

I thought I had lost time somewhere as I didn't remember Matthews scoring 50-in-50 and then I googled it and it was in Toronto's 72nd game of the year.
Does anyone else count it as the games a player has played? I was always under the impression that 50-in-50 (or similar achievements), were based on the # of games the team had played?
Oilers Goal Differential
17/18: 234 GF / 263 GA (-29)
18/19: 232 GF / 274 GA (-42)
19/20 (82 game pace): 257 GF / 254 GA (+3) in 64 games
2021 (82 game pace):269 GF / 235 GA (+34) after 38 games

Actually it's not even at the level of the asterisk. It's more of a fun fact / historical footnote that only lives on in the fading memories of the devoted.

If it were the player’s first 50 games then I believe Kurri had 50 in 50 one year. Of course the centre of the universe didn’t even give it a mention at the time

Cam Neely had 50 goals in the 49 games he played in 1993-94, but since it wan't the first 50 Bruins games, it was never considered 50 in 50 like Richard, Gretzky, or Lemieux.
Matthews was just in a random 50 game stretch, so it definitely doesn't count outside the minds of Leaf homers.

I've typically even hated the Canucks more than the Flames.
I have a deep dislike for the Knights too. Especially after dealing with several of their fans "unprovoked" in T-Mobile.
Nothing will ever top the Leafs though. Especially if they win a round this spring.

Any benefit to the Oilers , even a miniscule one, trumps any schadenfraude I may get from a Flames' lost.

My shadenfreude spikes if the Oilers are out. At that point, I just want everyone else to share our misery, and so I actively cheer against all the Canadian teams. I hate the Flames most as they're the oldest rival and I grew up just hating even the sight of them. I still hate Lanny McDonald's moustache and I can't even stand red and yellow together. Huge amounts of dislike for all the Canadian teams behind that too.
But similarly, I'm first and foremost concerned with what benefits the Oilers. Tonight, I'd have preferred to see Calgary win. It's not like they have a legitimate shot at the playoffs anyhow, and it would have helped us close the gap on a Knights team that just doesn't seem to want to lose lately. Ah well. Now we just have to beat them ourselves on Saturday. Hopefully we finally bring our A game again.

Same for me. I don't really hate the Sens or Jets nearly as much as the 4 other Canadian teams, but still, I don't want anyone but the Oilers to be the team to bring the Cup back to Canada.
As for this season - we're on a great run since Christmas. Our 52 points are 2nd to only the Bruins (59) in that span. But the Kings have managed 48 in 3 fewer games for a .706 point % (even better than our .703). Vegas also close with 47 points in 36 games (.653, good for 8th).
Not sure I would have believed anyone if they told me 3 months ago that we would go 23-8-6 and in the next 3 months and still only be in 3rd place.
If we want to win our division, it's not exactly in our hands (2 against Vegas, 2 against LA), but winning those 4 would certainly put us in a pretty good position to not only win the division, but maybe even the Western Conference - we've never actually won the Pacific or the Western Conference. Last time we finished at the top in the regular season was 36 years ago when we finished first in the Smythe and Campbell Conference (and also won the Cup :) )

I have a buddy who's a Leaf fan - I do almost feel sorry for them. Matthews has just a single season left on his deal after this year. They're going to push him to sign an extension this summer and if he doesn't, then they HAVE to consider trading him. A deep playoff run probably helps them a lot and yet...they probably need to beat BOTH Tampa and Boston to get out of their division. That's a big ask. They are a really good team that added a ton at the deadline and yet, they won't be more than a coin toss odds to get out of the first round.
On the other hand, it's the Maple Leafs, so I don't feel that bad for them.
|
They HAD to go ALL IN this year, if this core is going to continue.
It's quite incredible that ALL of the forwards (except Jarnkrok) are UFAs soon...
O'Reilly, Bunting, Kerfoot, Kampf and others are UFAs this summer
Matthews, Nylander and Muzzin are in 2024.
Tavares and Marner are in 2025.
If they poop the bed this playoffs, the team falls apart. No question!
Bunting will want out. Matthews and Nylander probably won't resign.
They're toast!

Leafs top my list too. My dislike is usually based on the fans. Flames fans at least can joke around and many are able to allow themselves to be humbled by their team sucking. They take their shots too, but deep down you know a lot of them are right there in a similar spot as Oilers fans in the decade+ of darkness, you know that they know their team is gonna fail :)
Leafs fans though...just obnoxious most of them, and absolutely nothing to point to to back it up, lol. Their team hasn't done crap since most of the fans were born but so many of their fans just have that ridiculous naïve hope that great things are coming ... it disgusts me. Leafs also don't disappoint anyone that wants to cheer against them. So wonderfully consistent.

Matthews got an extra unofficial 50 in 50. He got 50 in 50 if you started his span of 50 games in the middle of the season. So that doesn’t make the unofficial list in the below article.
The official scorers get 50 goals within their team’s first 50 games of the season.
The unofficial ones get 50 goals within their first 50 games of the season (accounting for injuries).

Still a pretty insane thing to do.
