Arizona's been on a tremendous heater too. With a team full of nobodies and a salary cap of less than $45MM, they have won 6 of their last 8, taking points off playoff bound Minnesota and playoff aspirants Calgary and Nashville. They lost last night in Winnipeg, but they outshot the Jets 30-25 in that one.
They're playing good hockey right now and the Oilers can't afford to take them lightly. A win would take us to 90 points on the season and all the other teams in the race are idle tonight so it would finally look like we gained ground!

So, this sounds like a game where Skinner should get the start.

The Oilers need to not worry about style points, play sound hockey and just win the game.

11:30pm puck drop for me. Yeah, I'll be skipping this one.
Hoping for McDrai goala. I want 60 & 50 goals respectively. When was the last time a team had a 60 & 50 goal scorer in the same season?

As with every other question on when two teammates were last this good, the answer is the 1995-96 Pittsburgh Penguins. Mario Lemieux had 69-92-161 and Jaromir Jagr had 62-87-149.
Sportsnet could do another ridiculous comparison piece on the two teams if they wanted. Nugent-Hopkins would be in the Ron Francis role (27-92-119). Zach Hyman is Petr Nedved (45-54-99). Nurse becomes Sergei Zubov (11-55-66) and so on and so forth...
I think McDavid has his eyes set on 65 goals and 156 points. If he can get there on points, then he's outscored everyone in history not named Wayne or Mario. And goals - well, it is just a statement after all the fawning last year about Matthews hitting 60 and how impressive that really was (so impressive that they gave him the Hart over a guy who outscored him by 17 points!)

It'll be 11:52 puck drop. TNT needs twenty minutes to blather on about nothing.

I wasn't going to go tonight, but then I had a premonition that McDavid is getting 6 points tonight.
8-2 Oilers

The NHL might have some of the stupidest people involved in their scheduling. You want to grow the game so you have 2 games total on a Wednesday and you make the second one with the best player on the plant "starting" at 10:30 eastern. By the time the puck drops it will be closer to 11 pm eastern time.
How does that make any sense to them! If I was one of the NHL main sponsors, I would be pissed because the bulk of North America's population is in the eastern time zone and in all likelihood very few eastern viewers are even going to turn on the game because it won't start until almost 11 pm. If the schedule was packed, I would get it but there is only 2 games.

It makes as much sense as the first game starting at 8:00 (but probably 8:22) eastern. But yeah, the NHL hates its fans. I kind of wonder if hockey has a bit of the wrestling problem in the United States. Wrestling has a fan base that marketers simply don't like and don't want to sell to. If hockey was cared about we'd see a 7:00 pm eastern start and a 10:00 eastern second (with puck drop being the normal 5ish minutes behind). But since hockey isn't cared about the tail wags the dog.

The NHL definitely doesn't seem to market their game and stars as well as the other North American sports do.

I don't mind the 8 MST start...gives me more time to get things done so that I can enjoy the game at 9 CST.
Heck for the NBA Finals, these games start at 9 EST giving the PST fans some room to watch games at 6 in their zone. That sort of thinking are intended to increase overall ratings, yes?
In a change of subject, I'm keeping expectations of higher offensive output for Mattias Ekholm low.
However, I think he'll be become a benefactor of increased offensive numbers getting to play with more talented forwards opposed to middle of the pack Nashville forwards encouraged to carry out more of a dump & chase strategy for years....
This is a great environment for Ekholm to really meet his potential career wise
Moreover, I think this is also why Roman Josi deserved to win the Norris last season putting up 96 points with mainly dump & chase forwards whereas Cale Makar got to play with a stacked roster though not to his discredit...

Great subject change. I certainly don't expect Ekholm to keep up his recent scoring pace, but I do think he'll score more here than he did in Nashville. He's not stuck behind an all-world defenseman like Josi here. Even being behind Josi, who I think takes the vast majority of offense and PP faceoffs, Ekholm has scored 30+ points 5 times. That's decent offense that can be repeated, especially in the Oilers system where secondary assists aren't exactly a scarce commodity.

I knew Ekholm had some offense, he did score 10 goals 1 year. I knew he could move the puck alright but I have been surprised as to how much he jumps up in the rush, how well he moves the puck and how offensive he can be. His first goal taking it to the goal and making a great move then pinching down and firing that perfect slapper for the 4-4 goal was pretty impressive.

I don't think a lot of easy wins exist for a 3rd place team. The Oilers have outclassed very few opponents this year.
