Maple Leafs get Ryan O'Reilly and Noel Acciari, Minnesota gets a 4th round pick for taking half of O'Reilly's salary. St. Louis gets Mikhail Abramov and Adam Gaudette along with a 2023 first-round draft pick, Ottawa’s 2023 third-round selection and the Leafs' 2024 second-round choice.

So two B-level prospects, a first, a second and a third, plus a fourth for Minny's trouble.

Nice to see the Leafs piss a whole drafts worth of picks away on Nick Foligno 2.0.

Please don't do this Ken Holland.

Pick almost any big trade where a bunch of draft picks were involved and look at who the guys turned out to be:

Wayne Gretzky? Jason Miller, Martin Rucinsky & Nick Stadjuhar.

Eric Lindros? Jocelyn Thibault and Jeff Kealty

Holland's grand coup of Tomas Tatar to the Golden Knights? Joe Veleno, Robert Mastrosimone and Aidan Hreschuk

Draft picks are wildly, wildly overvalued by fans and GMs alike. If it's not in the top 10-15, then it's a coin toss whether the player even makes the NHL, and beyond the top round, then your chances of him being a player at all just keep dropping.

The fact is, the Maple Leafs are in an even more desperate situation than the Oilers. They need to contend for a Cup THIS year, because the end of next year Matthews and Nylander are both UFAs. If they continue to flame out in the first round, then they may as well say sayonara now. Matthews can go anywhere and make top dollar and not put up with stupid questions from bleephole Toronto media guys.

Their team has 9 UFAs on its current roster, so it's a lot like the 2006 Oilers. There time is now, and their margin for error is low. Draft picks aren't going to mean anything if Matthews leaves as a free agent.

Whether you like to admit it or not, the Oilers are in the same boat. We have maybe an extra year of wiggle room, but that's it.

I hate myself for how much I like this for the Leafs.

Yeah, I hate the Leafs, but their GM managing to actually get a two team, 2 x 50% retained salary on O'Reilly is a good job of deal making.. They are a real contender now, O'Reilly is a winner, super hard on the stick, great shot, sick FO percentages, forechecking demon, and plays an awesome PK..

Crap. faint

O'Reilly for 1.85M of cap space and just one 1st involved. Not much bad can be said about that. Dubas wants a proven playoff performer to show his bunch of chokers the way. Of course I hope it fails and O'Reilly is indeed taking a huge step back this year. But that 1st round exit streak is a tiny bit more in danger today.

Still don't see this team beating Tampa or Boston in 7 game series. Goaltending and D are moderate at best.

It is curious that they identified the center position as what they needed to go heavy on. I guess it kinda makes sense since Jason Spezza was leading the charge the last time they really had a shot, vs Montreal (lightning were very generously nappy last season but they were able to get the effort up to 70% when needed to close the deal). You expect better from the tens of millions they spend on forwards, but I guess it is what it is. They got their Spezza back icon_biggrin
