Both teams are similar - offensively gifted, defensively suspect. And the Oilers trying to do the defensive shell usually looks kinda like this.

It does seem a bit arbitrary that deflecting the puck out is fine, but something like that is looked upon the same as shooting it directly out.
That said, it is the rule. We've seen that called lots before. And there was no doubt that it went straight out.

Oilers have to know that they can't play the foot off the gas, defensive shell of a game against a good hockey team. 1 period of play out of 3, and here we are. How often does the lesson have to be taught?

They tried to sit on a lead for 40 minutes and predictably, it didn't work. OT and SO weren't so pretty. Not sure about some of the personnel selections and really didn't like some of the shot selections.
I'm still not sure how McDavid didn't score when Shersterkin fell over though...
