Barrie and Kulak both played that 3-2 about as bad as possible.
Too bad, after the Nurse error on goal 1 the team hadn't played bad defensive hockey this game. Tough time for a terrible play.

What should Barrie have done there?

It wasn't one of Barrie or Kulak but as a tandem they were non-committal. They didn't really take away a shooting or passing option. On an odd man rush you need to take away options as soon as possible to allow the goalie on a chance on the remaining option(s)
In fairness there are a couple of points I will give the D in their defence;
- it was a heck of a passing play, pretty textbook 3 on 2
- I would have to see the replay to see if a forward could have or should have been hurrying back to even the odds.
- they didn't really make a huge error, which is a step forward.

Okay, quotes like “as bad as possible” and “terrible play” mislead me.

Fair ball, poor choice of words. While I try to avoid hyperbole, in the moment it sneaks in at times!
I will also admit that a lack of action is a pet peeve.
ETA; the ninja edit you made from "quotes" to "hot takes" actually made me LOL. and I mean that in a genuine, that is awesome, kind of way! It is actually term I hate, and used it earlier. I tend to use that when mocking opinions I find ridiculous so in this case your use of it works perfectly. Well played.
