...gotta admit. After last game, I completely hit the PANIC button. I didn't think they would win another game this season. I might have over reacted a bit. ha.
...this time, it's for real (isn't it?).

Boggles my mind that we can look so good vs the top teams then look so panicked vs everyone else. Props to Stu for holding us in it in that ugly 1st.

Agreed with both you guys. Skinner rebounded nicely. Think he has the 5th best save percentage in the league now. He really has only had one bad game

2-2 on the toughest road trip of the year. Looks way worse because losses were bad.
Finally get a Cali team next, but still in a tough part of the schedule. I'm assuming we'll get to play a weak team at some point.

Kings are probably the weakest for us and they are still damn good

STOP...turning the puck over for crying out loud....these almost seem like unforced turnovers via careless clearing attempts/passes under minimal pressure from their opponents...especially JP.
Great game Stu...goals from Foegele are a bonus but keep the legs & forechecking going.
A rather low key game from Turtleneck though I guess that hesitancy stems from his recent antics resulting in a suspension.
If I had a voodoo doll for each Staal brother every time they play against the Oilers....

Dr Jekyll, Mr. Hyde team. We got the stops tonight. Ride Skinner for a bit. I could care less about cap hits or contracts. All about winning.

Indeed, ride Stu for a while. Take the heat off Soup until he can get things back together.

The guy just looks steady.. doesn't beat himself.. and one of the best traits I've noticed is it doesn't take much for him to freeze the puck.. which with the way the Oiler defense is playing is the best thing they can do.. get a complete re-set.. line change.. end any possibility of any fire drill.. and pizza deliveries.. Oilers defense (and some forwards) too easily get running around in their own end, lose position and it takes an entire shift to get it back to get a line change.
Sees the puck extremely well through traffic.
Foegle is smartening up.. passed up a good shot on a 2 on 1 with LD.. they talk it over.. and with game winner.. he takes the shot.
Holloway has the yips, needs more NHL games to settle down and start to play with flow.
Barrie.. glad we didn't trade that guy now.. Bouchard has not taken the next step that was expected, hoped for..
Was not expecting much from Janmark.. but he plays a smart game.. good stick.. positioning is good.. welcome addition to the PK.. decent size and tends to use it to retrieve pucks..
Kostin.. he was supposed be lacking defensively.. but he was decent.. and in the O-zone he played OK, got some chances.. OK speed.. great size, and uses it.. you can see where he could be a threat to create scoring chances. We'll see as he gets more ice.. but at first glimpse he's OK IMHO.
JP.. was the goat on the 2nd FL goal (should have stayed with the guy that dropped the puck back), but created the opportunity for the empty netter, retrieved the puck on the wall which sprung McD for the pass to Nooge.. a plus and a minus.. He skated miles.. great effort.
I might add this was a good test for the Oilers.. FL is a good skilled team.. but not that fast top to bottom.. Oilers tend to struggle vs. good skating teams (like Hurricanes).. speed kills in the NHL.

Stu just did what a real NHL goalie needs to be able to do.... Rebound. Had a terrible game last time in net, and then came out and held the boys in a rough first. The same can't be said for Soup, at any point this season.
Ride Stu for awhile.

Like all of you said. Ride it out with Skinner. Currently 7th in the entire league in save percentage. He is our goalie….. even if he has a bad game here or there… it will happen. Igor have some bad games for the Rangers last year. The best in the league can do it
Campbell is just not there for whatever reason. When Skinner is in net I have all the confidence we can win or steal a game. When Campbell is in net, it feels like we need a touchdown to win

He has had some rough patches for sure, but was it not Campbell that saved the Oilers’ butts vs Tampa?
What I mean to say is there is a bit too much hyperbole (in my opinion) on the bad side of the ledger for soup.
Having said that, Skinner has been better and more consistent so far, but he’s also (I think) seen bettef defensive performances in front of him. Against Carolina McDavid’s giveaway causing the late 1st goal was not acceptable, and he knew it - I think he was as mad about that as the final score because it really was aa turning point in the game.

Give away update..
Bouchard currently 4th worst in the NHL for defensive zone give aways for defensemen (16) .. Nurse is 8th (14)
This matches my general impressions from watching games.. need to improve if Oilers are going anywhere.
For Comparison;
Nemo 11
Kulak 5
Barrie 4
Ceci 3
Murray 2
For the amount of ice time he gets.. Ceci's number is pretty good.
For total give aways (all zones).. Nurse is 2nd worst in the NHL for defencemen (21).. Bouchard is 6th worst (18).

Only so many pucks to go around on that pairing. Ceci just doesn’t get enough opportunities with Nurse serving pizza after pizza. The forwards need to come back, because rush plays are too high risk, high reward for my liking.
This blueline is not getting better overnight. It’ll be a work in progress all season.

This stat needs to have some context. This giveaway update to try and prove Nurse and Bouchard are bad reminds me of the Russell defenders using blocked shots to defend him. Russell blocked a tonne of shots yes, but part of that was that he never got the puck away or forced dumpins, etc. He stood in the slot and defended like a pylon, looking to block.
Nurse and Bouchard need to be better at protecting the puck. I think everyone agrees on that.
To look at it deeper there is a number of things;
- Much like a player like Draisaitl players like Nurse and Bouchard have more giveaways because they have the puck so much more than other defenceman.
- A guy like Ceci that you mention is not good at puck retrieval so is not given chances for good/bad plays
- on that note, when some players get the puck they make a 3 foot pass that has no positive effect on the play but when that player gives it away, the D in question doesn't get the dreaded giveaway tick.
- Nurse has been discussed to death this last couple weeks but Bouchard isnt getting enough credit for how much he has developed defensively. He is far from perfect, and hopefully far from done developing, but he is much better than last year.
- he is logging a lot of 5 V 5 mins, usually gets high end comp. Most of the time he has a net positive effect on the game. He has some giveaways and mistakes but I find that his result in a bad result less often than his teammates. He gets the puck and attempts a LOT of plays per game so has a more giveaways but he has become one of the more stable options on the blue line.
Ceci, Barrie and Kulak tend to pick a spot in the slot and turn in circles. Bouchard and Nurse tend to get the puck. Even with the giveaways of the latter 2 I would rather that risk than the option of the first three, that is sit back and hope for the best.
This is all eye test, subjective but thats how I see it.
If fancy stats are your thing, a quick look at natural stat trick tells me that Bouchard has the best Corsi, fenwick and shot % of all defencemen.
None of this takes into account the role forwards play in the giveaway stat of a defencemen. We have some VERY bad wingers at being in the right place for zone exit passes. I dont know if that is system, effort or skill but I notice when Nurse and Bouchard are out there the players fly the zone quicker and are crossing more while leaving the zone. When the other defencemen are on the ice they come down lower on the boards and simplify the breakout.
Lastly, the entire team needs to be better at getting out of the Oilers end. All of the defencemen need to be better. The goalies (well, one goalie) need to be better. In the end, this team wont be a true contender until they find a way to take care of their own zone better.

I’m not too worried about Bouchard. You can tell he busts his ass every game and every second. I think he will continue to improve. I do agree we need to be better at getting the puck out of our zone and not allowing so many damn shots on our goalie. We have to be right at the top in shots allowed. Good thing Skinner has been unreal for us… let’s hope his play continues. He has stole a couple games for us already.

Good game after a joke in Carolina.
Skinner was great again. He just looks so confident in there. A stark contract to Campbell who looks lost right now.
Barrie had a good game. He's never going to be a defensive specialist and has had a few bad games but overall, I think he's been decent this year. I am glad they didn't trade him as to me, Bouchard looks like he's having a sophomore jinx season especially puck handling and offense wise.
Foegele looks like he's rolling. I thought he as decent all year, just wasn't getting anything to go in. Finally got his first goal against Tampa and was really good in the Florida game. Nice to see.
JP has been OK since getting bumped up. Doing lots of the small things which is nice. I hope the goals start going in soon because they need guys like him to chip in.
Holloway, it's time to send him down.
I think Niemelainen needs to be sent down. I assume as soon as Broberg is ready, it will happen.
