Yep somehow managed to get retention in both deals today. Apparently 33 more deals awaiting trade call

Did we need the retention? He is a 1.85M cap hit. 1.7M of LTIR space going into the deadline and we shed Lagesons 750k.

Nice of montreal, but hope we didn't pay much for retention we didn't really need, unless there is something else coming.

When the trade was first announced, all the twitter bloggers where saying how great of an add it was. He can play 2nd pairing, showed all his stats, etc, etc. Then it was a bad trade as soon as it was announced it was a second considering Braun with zero retention got a 3rd and they felt a 3rd was fair. They paid a round earlier to get retention.

Toronto paid and extra second to get Seattle to retain.

If Muzzin is back the leafs need to chop their roster down a bit to make the room. Need to remove 1.9M of cap. Likely why they needed the retention on Gio.

Not sure what we would be afraid of coming onto our books with the deadline over. Already set to demote Turris to the AHL if he's back early. I guess we saved Katz a bit of cash.

I think it would have been hard to afford both guys given Holland's atrocious ability to manage cap without getting some retention.

Of course, the amount you should pay for retention at this point is debatable, because the amount in actual dollars is low, and the cap hit is meaningless for Montreal and Philly on an expiring deal. Honestly, should just have your owner send a cheque to the other guy for the funds and leave it at that.

Think Kulak/Laggy swap adds 1.1M. Brassard would displace another AHL demotable dude so that's a wash. Think we still end up with 0.6M of space no? And if Turris comes back we would lose 525k of that if we have to dump him in the AHL. And then we're just in Klef's LTIR space.

Maybe I'm missing something, like if we wanted to carry an extra roster player. Archibald coming back is a real pain, along with our generally terrible cap management.

I think the Oilers cap situation looks better than it should because they don't have a full roster available.

If Kulak's only at 50% plus Lagesson gone, there's virtually no cap change to that.

I agree that the Turris thing is idiotic. Also, not sure why we'd hang on to Archibald to play 6-7 minutes a night in every other game, but maybe no one was interested.

I think that this is missing the square for pointing out that we made our deadline move 6 weeks ago when we got Kane...

I guarantee that comes up.

Did anyone get to actually watch the presser? Did anyone hit bingo? Is there anything from Kenny's time in Detroit that we can look to to glean some lessons?

What a great win on deadline day?

Anyone gonna do the final "true" tally of this trade? I've lost track but I think it's turned into a huge win for Holland.

Let’s giver a go;

Oilers trade Groundskeeper Willy, conditional 2nd and 7th

For

Brett Kulak (50% retained), Evander Kane, Jay Woodcroft, Dave Manson, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Jesse Puljujarvi, Mike Smith, a delayed presser, 15 degree forecast for day the team arrives back from this current roadie, 5 straight home wins including a sweep of #MustWeek, an extra-large Mediterranean Chicken (Royal Pizza), dinner for 3 to Ruth’s Chris and most importantly, playoff experience (50% retained).

I think Lagesson is a complete throw away just to get him out of the organization. He wanted a trade so he gets his chance to show case on a different team. I personally don't think he's an NHL player.

Kulak's a smart, low-key, useful player at both ends. Was part of the league's best 5v5 pairing for a few years with Jeff Petry in 18-19 and 19-20. #LetsGoOilers

Makes sense to me. And then reduce minutes for Keith & Barrie on the third pairing.

What a weird trade. I can't remember another where it trickled in as slowly as this. Not sure how this gets missed earlier. Does Mtl just hold up the trade call asking for one more thing and waits until Holland caves or something?!

Let's give Holland the benefit of the doubt that the 7th was the add for the retention, rather than an upgrade from a 3rd to a 2nd round pick.

And then let's just forget he gave a 2nd round pick as well, and everything will be OK.

If Keith is off the books, Barrie stays and perhaps Kulak gets signed.
Hearing Kulak’s ask is 4 x $2.5M (minimum.)
Is he your 2nd pairing LD?
I like him as my 3rd - but not at that term/salary.

I'd really like us to not give extra term for once in the Holland era. Everyone seems to realize he'll bend over and give up an extra year or two on every deal. When Devin Shore and Slater Koekkoek are getting second years, then it won't surprise me if Kulak does too...but man, I'd prefer if his deal was only a couple years at most. He won't likely get more expensive at this point in his career, and if he's surpassed, then it's easier to get rid of him.

I don’t find $2.5 too bad at all. Even at 4 years. He was quite good for us. I never really watched him much before, but if that is about what we can expect, I’m more than ok paying him $2.5. Loved his attitude as well. I know you can’t throw money around for attitude, but I just like seeing it.

He is an NHLer now. He very likely will still be a serviceable NHLer in 4 years too. And not many will be happier than him to lift the Cup as an Oiler.

I mean 4 years is a bit meh, but as long as it's not saddled with a full NMC, then at 2.5 it's perfectly acceptable to me.

My issue is more the fact that we would be locked in to a Left D with all of Nurse, Ceci and Kulak for years to come. The three years left on Ceci's deal would be the shortest.

If they get surpassed - and there's a good chance at least one if not more do - then we're forced to find a home for them, which if we had brilliant management might not be that hard, but we have Oilers management so more likely results in buyouts or needless giveaways of assets to make that work.

I'd be more comfortable giving, say, $3MM for two years than $2.5MM for four.

You're correct. Ceci is RD. Still, I don't know that I want to tie up another older defenceman long-term. I would pay more for less years.

Everyone is entitled to opinions, even your crappy one.

I mean IF you need that 4th year to have him at $2.5, it's really not much of a concern for me. I like the savings, and WORST case you've got a Kris Russell level guy at Kris Russell money. Not ideal, but not crippling. Best case, and in my (much better than yours) opinion, much more likely, we get something like what we saw during his time here. According to my Habs fan friends he's solid. We can use a guy like that. Doesn't spaz out and pull out the patented Staios blind ring around the boards super move at the first sign of pressure.

I would be thrilled to hear a deal for Kulak in the $2.5M range.

I second the motion - I'd be pretty thrilled with Kulak at 4x$2.5M; I'd also be happy at 3x$3M; even 2x$3.5M. Would help bridge the gap toward Niemelainen and/or Samorukov making the show and pushing their way onto the full-time roster.

It's amazing to me that you, of all people, would love the second coming of Steve Staios.

He’s 28, turns 29 in January. Signing him to a 4 year deal has him expire when he’s 32. That’s not breaking the team.

With the versatility of Broberg and of Kulak being able to play either side, he doesn’t block Broberg from progressing up the lineup. And I mean, worst case you package him in with a 2nd in 2025 if Broberg, Nemo, Sammy et all pass him. Oh. Wait.

icon_lol That made me laugh. I was a little loopy when I was replying to this thread - had been awake 25 hours at that point (crazy travel day).

Anyway - no. What I said is worst case he would still not be as bad as Staios. Or at least in my mind that's what I said.

I won't burn the house down if Kulak leaves for greener pastures, but I would be very OK with a cap hit that starts with a 2, regardless of the number of years.

I’d rather have the problem of moving quality D because you have so much depth rather than look for it. Isn’t this part of our goal? Organizational depth. It’s easy to move valuable assets and from I saw this past few days even the worst contracts can be moved.

Kulak at 2.5ish will never be the worst.

Yes - that's why I'm totally in favour of signing Kulak. I just would prefer we date rather than get married forever at this point.

Divorces can get expensive, but most marriages work out when you find the right partner.

Hard to see a lot of red flags here. It’s not exactly a Tinder date like we have seen so often in the past.

My general belief is that anyone who's not young, and not in the top half of your roster shouldn't get more than a couple years. Best to keep cap flexibility as much as possible, and those guys are the ones you're most likely to regret if they fall off a cliff. If a name player declines quickly, someone is still going to take a crack at seeing if it's just you, or if he's really done. Look at Turris, he was both traded and then signed as a free agent after he was clearly dwindling.

With someone in the bottom half, you're way more likely to get stuck with him, because they don't have the same name recognition that can help you get out of the mistake.

I also think those guys are less likely to get a long deal from someone else. If you look at Kris Russell as an example, he came to Edmonton after an off-season where he got very little interest and had to sign super late to make sure he had a place to play. The Oilers then rushed to give him a four year deal before he hit free agency then next summer despite that. It's unlikely any other GM was thinking they'd pry him away by giving him a deal anything close to that long, and he was overpaid by at least double for the bulk of his deal - especially in the latter half when he was doing things like lighting up our own goalies in the 2020 playoffs.

I think Kulak is better than Russell, but I don't know what the next couple years brings. I liked Koekkoek in his first half season with the Oilers, and now we have him under contract for next year and no one is even talking about him as being in the mix for a roster spot.
