Oilers have traded Zack Kassian, the 29th pick and a future 2nd and 3rd rounder to Arizona for the 32nd pick. Edmonton frees up $3.2m in cap space.
EDM now has $14.4m in cap space (this includes Klefbom on LTIR).

Why does Holland always over pay? Man, other gms must love dealing with him.

Moving down 3 spots isn’t a big deal at all in this draft, at this spot.

Trading a second and third to get that Kass contract off the books, is huge.

Not ideal but the difference between 29 and 32 is minimal and it really depends on when the picks will be. Might be one in 2024 and another in 2025.

Cost of doing business in my opinion rtft

I disagree in this case. The 3 spots in this draft, at that point of the draft, is basically nothing. The future second and third is not ideal as it can limit other moves but it isnt much to get out of a terrible deal.
Judging the move as a whole will come down to how he uses the cap space.

Add the Smith LTIR space, Keith’s (incoming retirement) and suddenly there is some money to go around.

Wow, that Kassian contract sure ended up being expensive. Seems the only people that didnt know it was a mistake the second it was signed worked for the Oilers.

Good work paying assets to fix your own mistake Kenny!

Too bad that Kassian contract turned out how basically everyone but you knew it would.

Oilers move $6.4M in cap space, drop six picks in this draft.
The future 2nd and 3rd aren't cheap. But that's the cost of winning — and getting a UFA goalie — now.

Spector getting the number of picks wrong AND listing the cap space in a misleading way is peak Oilers reporter quality.

And if he didn’t do this deal we would all be complaining. Rectifying a mistake. I approve. Lots of time to recoup a pick or two and everyone and their dog agrees it’s win-now time.

Now just don’t mess up the cap capital.

Did you think Kassian wasn’t going to cost? After seeing the Toronto deal I figured we wouldn’t have a 1st round pick.

Just live with your mistake. It only saves about $2 moon/yr, and they are just going to use it to overpay somebody. This team really loves wasting assets on their own mistakes.

3.2M but who’s counting. He was being bought out if he wasn’t being traded. This is definitely the lesser of two evils and I think it was necessary….if they spend the new money appropriately.

No one should actually care about this though. Who needs a full draft??? We need to win, so if you can convert draft picks in to actual players, then whether that's by drafting with them or trading them, they're still doing what they need to do.

Honestly, this is a steep price, and you wish Holland understood the value of cap space last year at this time when he was badly overpaying for Duncan Keith, but I'm glad we flushed that. I only wish I had more confidence that we were going to spend that cap space wisely.

Good teams (ie this years cup finalists) keep adding to their teams with cheap youth that they draft.

While I agree the draft can be important your statement isn't always true. I am pretty sure the penguins traded away their first round pick almost every year for a decade. When they did pick they traded that prospect to improve the team today.

The Oilers are out of time to wait on post 1st rounders to MAYBE make a difference in 3 years. The Oilers have 4 years of McDavid left, that is the window. It can be extended if re-signs but the 4 years is the real window.
I would trade any asset that isn't going to help in that window in a heartbeat.

Goalie that ended up winning them 2 cups was a 3rd. Doubt they win either with just Fleury. Guentzel that gave them a huge boost of offense was a 3rd too.

Pens had a long road to fix their team. Combo of good trades and big hits in the draft put them over the hump again for 2 cups.

Holland is terrible at trading. And we don't like picking in the 2nd and 3rd rounds too. Seems bleak lol.

You are essentially correct, they said the penguins haven't had a 1st since 2014.

Holland ain't great at trading OR drafting. But he did win Cups 20 years ago sooo....

He knows a little bit about winning?

You're right. Can't argue with results.

Did you know that he actually was the GM of Detroit for a long time? They had some success with both late drafts and pre-salary cap signings during his tenure there!

Just can't resist pissing away picks.

This team will never have close to a full draft.

Pay a 3rd (or 2nd if we won more) to take on 2x5.5M from a GM desperate for cap space to make a splash and save his job that was only able to trade to you.

Pay a 2nd and 3rd to get rid of 2x3.2M for a deal you signed that everyone knew was dumb at the time.

We're getting good at this.

I'm gonna be so pissed if they did this just to free up money to give Campbell $6 million/yr.

Brace yourself. Also big long-term money for Evander Kane!

Also that Maveric kid is guaranteed to be a star now...

I think Kuemper is his target now... Which honestly, I don't know who's a worst pick between the 2.

So you don't want the Oilers to get a goalie then?

This trade will be decided by what we do with the new Cap space.

So this trade was basically Kassian, 2nd, 3rd and 1.9M space for Evander Kane. Oilers management does it again if you use proper big picture view.

Big picture it was a good trade. Yes, the Oilers gave up two assets to get rid of another asset, but the dollar amount was so large that it kind of had to be done. Hopefully they learned from the original sin, time will tell.

So long Zack Kassian...after the last season, he's going to struggle to catch on anywhere, I'd think.

Geez. $2.5M for ZERO goals over 75 games. That beats Tobias Reider. I mean, he's a D who hits a little, but still.

He was decent when he wanted to be, like during his last contract year. He has good tools, but he's a floater when he's not motivated. Someone might pick up for a cheap 1-year deal to see if he can bounce back. I hope it's not the Oilers.

Any team that can't give 1 year deals needs to stay far away from Kassian. I guess that means us, since we give minimum 2 to free agents.
