Totally preventable though. sigh

This team is hopeless in the postseason. Great game but they come up short because of bad mistakes, yet again.

An all-too familiar refrain: The Oil could not outscore their mistakes. Smith really picked a time to @#%@ up badly.

So that’s what, 7 post season losses in a row now?

What the hell did Smith do there? Right up the middle.

Did you see that performance? Reminiscent of the old coach days, so Schmiddy was fitting.. just as my pants fit due to no launching 😩

Don't think you can play kostko either. Looked shaky as hell in the last month aside from the nothing game to end the season.

He did beat the Kings on Mar. 30. His last 5 games, including the LA game and excluding the final game against VAN, Koskinen had a .901 save pct. Smith was .886 tonight. I'd start Koskinen.

Oilers Goal Differential
17/18: 234 GF / 263 GA (-29)
18/19: 232 GF / 274 GA (-42)
19/20 (82 game pace): 257 GF / 254 GA (+3) in 64 games
2021 (82 game pace):269 GF / 235 GA (+34) after 38 games

You have my attention. I just don’t know how Koskinen would handled a period like the 1st period tonight. I think he would have allowed several there.

As much as I joke about Smith/battle, it was really needed in this 1st period tonight and although he was scored on twice, he limited the damage.

I don't think they will. The team has decided in the last month that Smith is the starter, and so he'll have to have more than one bad game to end his run. Whether that's the right call we will see.

I was at the building tonight - my first playoff game since Game 3 versus Carolina in 2006. It was fun, and relatively loud, but it's nothing like 2006 still. We've lost the level of die-hard here somehow. There was always almost a rabid frenzy about those crowds...maybe we will get there if we win a round or two, but for now, it started loud, and then it wasn't quite there. Not a lot of chanting...just a bit of a buzz and pom pom waving. I'd love to see the next level up from the fans...

It doesn't help when you only have the 1 song that is chanted. I know I come from the European background where most sporting clubs fans will have 3 or 4 minimum chants to sing, but only one song isn't good enough.

More songs would mean that you'll sing more as more songs get sung and that in turn will ramp up the atmosphere and noise levels. It's not just an Oilers thing, it's most North American sports are the same.

5 straight playoff losses with us for Smith. If you just play the odds, there is no way he could possibly lose 6 in a row, right? :)

The problem is what happens if Koskinen doesn't play well. It's not like we can say that's impossible. Smith established himself as the starter over the last quarter of the season and was a big part of the reason why the Oilers have (had) home ice advantage. Two games is not unreasonable.

7 in a row overall for the team, 6 for Smith.

Game 1 LA: .886%, 4GA
Game 4 WPG: .907%, 4GA
Game 3 WPG: .865%, 5GA
Game 2 WPG: .972%, 1GA
Game 1 WPG: .900%, 2GA
Game 1 CHI: .783%, 5GA (in 26 minutes for a stellar 11.31GAA!)

Would be awesome if he could have kept up with what he did his last 8 starts. But I don't think it's realistic to expect that for an extended playoffs run. But if we could at least his season averages of .915%/2.81GA, we could go far. But this is our current tandem and their numbers over the last 3 playoffs:

Koskinen: 1-2, .889%, 3.16
Smith: 0-6, .892%, 3.27

Just not good enough. Despite Smith's March heroics, I still contend that Skinner should have been given the reins, or at least the opportunity. Who knows, could have been our Dryden/Roy/Ward/Niemi/Binnington.

Anyway....let's hope we can outscore our problems tomorrow night.

Going back to Calgary, apparently Mike Smith has now lost 10 straight playoff games. UGLY.

Whats Skinner up to these days? Rallying behind rookie goalies has worked for teams before.

When in doubt

Up the boards and out.

Good night.

WRONG!

40 year old vet says up the middle all night long!

He will lay in bed tonight and tell his wife he made the glorious save after the blunder and team D let him down thereafter.

A lot of good on this team... but not enough great. You need a lot of great to win in the playoffs.

Wasted a hell of a game from McDavid.

Nurse has to figure out how to be a #1 Dman, and fast. Right now, he's a 3/4, at best.

And Smith... WTH

I’m not looking for easy targets. This could have went our way.

I just thought Hyman would be more of a presence in this line up by now.

Perhaps I overrated him.

Nuge looked bad out there, Puljujarvi was benched for some reason, blender was in effect. Oilers panicked and skated aimlessly for 45 minutes at least, then eased up in the third. Hyman was aggressively forechecking but had no support. Too many: 1 guy trying to win the game on his own instead of aggressive team passing and play. When Kassian threw the big hit, the Kings' attack died. So no one else hit. Even Kane didn't look evil out there.

Not Smith's fault. Who left their man uncovered beside the net to deflect it in?

Dumb play by Smith- yes. Reason they lost? No. Total scramble and breakdown in their own end, like they did most of the game.

Seriously?

He had an open man alone in the corner. On his forehand no less.

Koskinen makes that play every day.

Smith tried to be a hero and it cost his team Game 1 of the 2022 playoffs.

EDIT: When asked post game, Smith said he was trying to make something happen. Tried to do too much. In a tight game he can’t afford to make mistakes like that. Admitted it cost them the game. It’s only one game. Move on a worry about game 2.

Saw that in the presser. Man up for the mistake and face the music. Such a great change from the old days of protecting players from the media. But, yeah, seriously, I think Woodcroft got outcoached. It felt like Tippett running the team tonight. In the presser, Connor even said the Oilers gave up too many chances off the Kings' rush - more than they had all season. It was a fustercluck in their own end. I think that the blender, nerves, physical hockey and everybody's favourite wildcard, Steve Kozari, just messed up the amazing game flow the Oilers had to end the season.

Move on to game 2 (as Smith said like 6 times in the presser).

McDavid over 25mins...and 5 players under 10mins. We're never going to learn are we?

I think the early hole decided his ice time. That’s an easy fix……it’s not like we have a history of flat starts.

Smith did a very Smithian thing.

Puljujarvi needs to find a playoff level. I thought Hyman looked great and he was my OT pick to snipe. Yamo after a terrible first penalty looked unreal. McDavid and Draisaitl were unreal.

We lost a goaltending battle. Quick beat Smith by a wide margin.

I liked the fight and battle for the first 2 periods, coming from behind as they did showed they wanted it. That third period killed us, the early penalites against gave all the momentum to the Kings and they just couldn't pull it back till after the goal.

Quick out danced Smith in this one, but if and of course it's a BIG if we can get at him early on Wednesday and dent his confidence we'll be fine.

What ever I have it won't be tasting sweet... What was perhaps more bitter was we had the Kings feed as well, talk about dull....

That game was handed to LA with 5 minutes left. WTH are you thinking there, Smith? Just gotta be better next game, all there is to it.

I thought Hyman skated miles tonight with the puck in the o zone but nothing got to the net. Top line was going most of the night. Oilers had chances, Quick outplayed Smith. Thought Kassian had a good game. JP looking pretty pedestrian out there, I don't mind if he doesn't always bury chances, just get yourself in position and get the chances....and if you're big and fast and you're in an offensive funk, don't be the least physical Oiler on the ice. I guess his <8 minutes reflects the level of play. I'm not sure who you promote on the right side, though. Hate to pick on him but they need him.

Fact is they got in an early hole, came back twice but a dumbass error by Smith leads to a goal shortly after. I expected better, they're a better team than they showed tonight.

Better get the next one or they're in trouble.
