A win here would make me feel directionally more positive about this team.
No moral victories.

This game in my eyes has huge playoff implications. We loose this and it could take us out.

The Oilers have a realistic chance of getting home ice in the first round. Need this one if they want it.

Teams that do well in the playoffs are typically going into the playoffs playing well. They may not win all their last regular season games but usually their game is in a good place. I am hoping we start seeing the Oilers do that where they iron out any issues they have in their 5 on 5 game, they system play and their special teams and start putting in consistent efforts. So even if they lose a game here and there, the losses aren't complete meltdowns like we saw in Calgary.

I think that's a generalization and it doesn't really have much basis in reality. Tampa Bay lost 7-4 to the Winnipeg Jets on March 8th. The Blue Jackets smoked the Panthers 6-3 on February 24th. The Avalanche were torched 8-3 by the Maple Leafs on December 1. The Hurricanes also were victims of the Blue Jackets - losing 6-0 on January 13th. Just last week the Devils stomped the Rangers 7-4.

Heck, one of the most famous Oilers losses ever came Feb. 12th, 1984 when the Whalers spanked the Boys on the Bus 11-0. I believe that in fact was a championship team too...

Big losses don't mean any more than close games once they're in the rear view. Every team has an off-night now and then.

The Oilers have a goaltending issue - everyone knows that (other than the GM, I suppose). But one bad game against Calgary doesn't have a lot of meaning. Sometimes a blowout is a good rallying point anyhow.

So barring injury, are we really going Koskinen/Smith the rest of the way? No chance to bring up Skinner to see if he can catch lightning in a bottle? Go all 1986 Patrick Roy on the league?

You've seen how Holland works now. He waits until a problem is so persistent that it should have been dealt with long before before he acts. If the coaching change was any example, then should we fall a couple games down in a playoff series with both goalies playing terrible, MAAAAAYBE we'll make the call to Bakersfield. Or maybe he'll wait another game with his decision resting entirely on what happens in that 60 minutes?

The Oilers gave up 4,1,5, and 4 goals while getting swept by the Jets last year and they still came back with the same 39 year old starter. The Oilers are already way beyond the problem being so persistent. Never mind the playoffs, I have to see that the Oilers aren't coming back with the same duo next season before I believe it.

It’ll be smith and skinner next year due to a)Smith being given that second year 🤪🙄 and b) they’ll swing out on every goalie this offseason. Skinner as the 1, Smith as his backup. And Fanti lights the A on fire.

I expect they'll tell everyone how hard they worked towards getting exactly one goalie this summer - whoever is the most hotly chased.

After that, they'll setlle back in, re-sign Koskinen and be back to status quo.

Worth noting, any tandem that includes Mike Smith next year is a massive error by the organization. It should be explained to him that the team will be expecting to send him to the minors if he returns, and that there's an exit route if his injury is acting up and preventing him from playing.

I am holding out hope that Smith will have an mysterious injury and be in LTIR all year. Hips tend to go on old goalies and I don't think he's had anything related to that.

He's a pretty arrogant guy so maybe how much he's been hurt, how his game seems to have fallen off and how the press has been ripping him (rightly so) will be a huge shot to the ego so rather than admit he's getting old and losing it, he will want to glam on to a "injury" as the reason he fell off and not his age.

I never said if they are playing well that automatically means they will just cruise through the playoffs no problem. But whether you agree or not, I don't think a team going into the playoffs playing like trash for a long period of time is a good thing. I think having a good stretch of time where you are playing solid that you can have as a foundation is a good thing to have in your back pocket and might give you a better chance vs your team stumbling into the playoffs with their game in shambles then hoping they can just flip a switch and be better.
