That’s was a comedy of errors in OT. I will take point. Played a great 60 minutes, unfortunately they needed a 65 minute night effort tonight.

61 minute effort...

Makar is the best player in the NHL. That guy is scarrrrrrrryyy good.

McDavid invisible, no space and can't play a physical game to match the Avs. Drai tried but looked slow.

Makar was all over the place and looked awesome. The Avs are beyond stacked.

Good effort by the Oil through 55 minutes of this game. They really started to fade energy-wise at the end and Colorado looked like they could play another period, easy. You can tell how badly the Avs want to win. That's a lesson for the Oil... Colorado never stopped playing hard and pulled out the win.

Think Toews lives up to the hype. Keep seeing him complimented as one of the best shutdown guys in the NHL. He did a heck of a job on McDavid.

I think you are all forgetting what an advantage being used to playing at altitude is. When I was younger and my knees weren’t shot I was always surprised at first what a difference it was playing soccer in Jasper on my weekends. … and Jasper is still a couple thousand feet lower than Denver. I thought the Oilers did great for not having played there in 2 years. The refs were certainly shiite tonight as well.

Don't know about best player in the NHL, but man, he's not far off. What a player. Bet the Flyers are loving that Nolan Patrick pick at 2. I mean Patrick was 1/2 on every single list, so it's not like it was a Niinimaki or anything, but still, must hurt a little.

Barring injury, that kid could very well end up one of the best Dmen of all time. Offensively he's already off to the best start in NHL history with in terms of points per game. And he's no slouch defensively either.

Yes I'd agree. I even put him higher then McDavid. To have his ability at that age is unheard of. The play reading and hockey IQ is mensa level. His numbers will be scary if his health holds out.

I prefer seeing Draisaitl taking the draw. Without checking the numbers, he just seems to win the big draws. We get puck possession to start OT and it’s a different 3 on 3.

Yeah that should be your go-to every OT.. get LD out there to win the face off.. its usually the only one in OT.. the team that gets the puck 1st usually holds on to it for almost a minute.. its just playing the
odds smartly.

Colorado was too much for us I think. Got on our heels and couldn't get off them. Better luck next time!

5 - 2 powerplays, come on man. Think the refs had us pretty scared too by the end of it. Getting the message that any little crap we do will be called and the Avs can do whatever.

Seriously though, if you can keep LD off the ice on the kill, maybe he's not in power decline being gassed AF in the 3rd, and maybe he's involved in a different outcome in the 3rd. This is an issue at lower altitude, and it's worse in Denver. I want to see it where Leon hardly frigging sees the ice on the kill.

Great game.. if it weren't for some pukey penalty calls, and Darnell not doing up his chin strap.. we would have won this game.

Always sucks when something dumb happens in OT and its amateur hour and a loss after a good effort to overcome the Avs and Team NHL in black & white.

The Oilers didn't have much juice late in this one, on their heels big time. Altitude I guess. LD with 3-4 minutes too many taking draws, out on the kill, and the decline was blatantly evident in the 3rd. He becomes a center who can't push the play when he's gassed and if the play does get into the offensive zone but comes back, he doesn't have the legs to come back on coverage like centers are supposed to do.

I don't think the wheels in general were there certainly in OT, anyway, so this outcome might have been inevitable. Darnell's 3 inch gap on his chinstrap for his springloaded helmet, Kane losing track of the puck, and Connor not defending worth a damn were all involved in the conspiracy, sealing the deal for the Sweetheart Avs and their fans at Team NHL.

Hope the guys have something left for tomorrow night.

What a stupid rule and stupid way to lose a game. Darnell should have just played the puck and took the penalty. Leaving on that play cost them the game. Oh well a fitting in end to a highly disappointing deadline day.

Refs, useless as always.

Will the NHL ever figure it out? Has to be the worst and most inconsistently refed league of all the major sports. Just never know what you're gonna get any given night, or even a given moment in any game. And almost zero accountability.

I thought the same thing. Kadri made it so Nurse was screwed either way. The puck is literally in his end and 3 on 3 is all about creating off man rushes. So with the puck in his zone and him having to leave, he creates an odd man opportunity in his own zone. If he doesn't leave to help defend, he will 100% get called for a penalty and probably give up a goal because PP in OT seem to be almost a automatic goal.

I guess the answer would be to play with no helmet to stop a goal, take the penalty and hope you can kill it off.

I was thinking the same thing.. some game in the playoffs will be decided by this rule.. its a safety rule inherited from the kids leagues, they mean well but it shouldn't be a in the pro leagues.

They should modify it so that if the helmet comes off in his own zone he can keep playing.. and if it happens outside the blueline he has to go off.. just like the rule with a gloved pass.

Here's Kadri pulling off Nurse's helmet.. should've been whistled as a penalty for interference.

You just know this rule will burn a team in the playoffs.

The issue with this is that it's a safety issue. Playing without a helmet as a defenceman in the defensive zone is probably one of the most risky situations.

I think a better solution would be to actually call penalties if someone, away from the play, grabs and grapples with a defenceman, pulling his helmet off...don't even need to write any new rules to make that happen!

How does Kadri get a pass for anything at this point? Refs should be looking for that kind of garbage from him every night. Too busy looking for Yamamoto infractions maybe.

To be fair, this game had a bit of a playoff atmosphere to it last night. You have to expect that everyone is going to get in the spirit, including the refs. Ignoring blatant holds and interference is just what they do at this time of year.

Clearly plays for the wrong organization. Team NHL has a list of approved orgs.

Hasn't worked for McD.. beard.. chipped teeth.. scars.. torn knee ligaments..
NHL refereeing is just bad, they have been allowed/encouraged to "interpret" the rulebook as they see fit in order to manage the games/scores. For a laugh I'd like to see a team of SEL Swede or Liga Finnish refs do an NHL game just to see the difference, I predict the calls would be more consistent, initially a lot of PP's, then eventually the players stop the infractions.. simple cause and effect.

Honestly, I think it's worse than just being asked to ref as they see fit.

I think the NHL believes that people want to see more "battles" so let the players mug each other, and they want more parity, so they emphasize to refs not to give any special treatment to stars - which gets skewed because refs in trying not to give preference go too far the other way.

I think that 2006 showed that when asked to, the refs can call the rule book, but the NHL doesn't actually want that. Several GMs argued against that - Brian Burke specifically argued that no holding and hooking means people are going too fast so suggested that they need to allow more interference in order to prevent injuries. And the guys in charge of reffing and discipline are Campbell and Parros - who wouldn't have had careers if they weren't allowed to get towed around the ice behind better players.

The NHL needs a culture change at the top - then maybe they'll realize that they hurt themselves by deemphasizing skill in favour of illegal play. But it probably doesn't happen until after Bettman is gone. I don't think he's changing out any of his lieutenants at this stage of the game.

I have said this before and I firmly believe it to be true.

There needs to be a culture change form all the guys that run the teams and the league, there is not doubt BUT. There also needs to be a culture change amongst the players.

The players are the ones that deal with it especially the stars. WHEN do you hear a player say anything? Pretty rare. A player gets mugged all game long and all they say is it's a tough job to be a ref or they won't talk about it. blah, blah blah. The top guys get it the worse so if all of these guys stood up and said something, I believe people would listen. But it has to be consistent and all of them. Not just a one off. But they won't do it because if they do and the refs start calling the rule book, guys in their union will lose jobs.

I think it's more fear of putting a bull's eye on their backs. You stand up and complain and the refs might do the reverse and call less against you. Or make a point of calling every ticky tack thing you do.

I think even people just CLAIMING McDavid was complaining about officiating got him a bit of a backlash in the last year, and he said virtually nothing.

Agreed it would be good if it was stars across the league all saying it.

A ref does need to manage the game depending on the score. The simple reason is teams play differently depending on the score. The problem is these refs don't know how to do it anymore. It used to be about keeping emotions in check. If team is getting blown out your likely to call everything to keep it from getting out of hand. If it's close you give a little leeway and don't make the call unless your sure. It didn't mean you put your whistle away and let anything go. I'd say the problem is a lack of game management abilities. It's a light touch. If you do it right no one is sure you did anything at all. NHL reffing quality has fallen so far since the 80s and 90s. I don't think it's a conspiracy. I just honestly think they aren't very good.
