A new baby and contract? Not a bad week for Niemelainen.

I am glad they resigned him. I think there could be a player there.

Well, giving a 8th defenceman a one-way contract (for a year) is a bit of a risk.

How so? One-way & two-way contracts apply to salary only. If a player is waiver eligible they have to clear waivers regardless of their contract status to get sent to the minors.

The one way part is in the second year of the deal so I hardly see it as a risk. I believe league minimum is 750K, so at 762,500, he's going to be barely making above league minimum. If for some reason he isn't on the team by year 2 when the one way kicks in, considering you get a little over 1 mill in cap relief if you send the guy to the minors, that entire contract if he is in the AHL won't count against the cap. So it literally won't hurt them in any way.
To keep guys, especially if they are European, you have to give them some incentive to stay here if they aren't in the NHL otherwise they will just go back to Europe and some team would sign him in a heartbeat. He will be making 300K in the minors next year. I would bet that if he went to Europe, he could get more than that PLUS have his living expenses covered. If you want quality players in your organization, you do have to actually pay guys something.

Really love what I see in his game, home grown mean, hard hitting, shut down d. Watch how great he will turn out to be.
