I remember a time, nearly 15 years ago, when we were told the Oilers and Blackhawks would be huge western conference rivals fighting banners at the top of the standings. Now the Oilers have Duncan Keith!

After last night's laughter, what do we see tonight?

Seems strange that a team that has players that have won 3 of the last 5 Hart trophies isn't a serious contender, still, and the question is asked.

I want everyone to know that betting the Over in Chicago vs. Edmonton is a can't miss wager.

omg, Smith is starting again. B2B right off injury.

I'm starting to really believe Tippett wants to go home early. Just is just so low energy now along with the team.

The order must have came down from the boss, they need Smith injured so he can go on LTIR for the rest of the deal.

I have to say I am surprised. Fatigue shouldn't be a problem but crappy play is.

OMG this is the only logical explanation. Or Tippett wants to find a new job.

Man, Tippett's belief in the Battle Level of Smith is just endless. Guy gets lit up and possibly hurt playing his first game in weeks, so we immediately just go back to the well. Unbelievable.

Skinner is young and got lit up the last time he played too though, sooooo, you know that Tippett's going to hold that against him for a long, long time.

Maybe its a message to Smith to stop being a baby and get out there and do his job? Personally I would have started Skinner but when I saw him flexing that leg, I rolled the eyes because it's just getting laughable and seems like the guy just needs to freaking man up a little.

If every time he stubs his toe, that means in Smith's mind it's LTIR time, then maybe he needs to do everyone a favor, just pack it in and retire.

I highly doubt it's a Message-Sending. I expect that Smith asked to get right back in, and Tippett just complied.

That said, his job isn't to make his ancient netminder feel better, it's to win games. Does anyone really believe that Smith given the year he's had is the best option going back-to-back? Is that really what is best for the team?

I think likely not. Chicago is crap, so maybe we still pull this out, but it's far from a sure thing. Maybe a stellar Marc-Andre Fleury performance tonight and a Smith faceplant hastens Holland on making a deal though. I can't wait to see how much we'll pay for another old goalie on the wrong side of 30!

You mean like Neck Beard Holtby? I recall Holtby making 5 star saves one playoff while injured, then acting like a shot animal between every whistle for the cameras. Barely able to scrape his poor poor carcass off the cold ice after a whistle on every God damn save, but is Dominic Hasek after the zone faceoff again. Except Lord Battle is lacking the 5 star stuff after the ensuing faceoff of course.

Tippetts belief in Lord Battle has no ends. And he obviously pined the GM really hard last summer as well about Lord Battle. Ken you friiggin idiot..

I hope this decision blows up in his face.

I guess giving Skinner a game against a terrible team could make things complicated. Smith playing like crap followed up by a Skinner win? That's bad optics for the Battler. Play Smith, best case he wins and you look smart. Worst, he loses and you blame the team for letting him down. I guess extra worst is he gets injured as we allow more odd man rushes and he pulls something going hard a couple nights in a row. What are the chances of that though? Pretty damn unlikely I'd say!

Ugh, I would have changed my score prediction if I knew this was the case. What a disaster. Including yesterday, the Oilers play 11 games in 20 days. Running your goalie back-to-back would seem to be a non-optimal decision.

Oilers Goal Differential
17/18: 234 GF / 263 GA (-29)
18/19: 232 GF / 274 GA (-42)
19/20 (82 game pace): 257 GF / 254 GA (+3) in 64 games
2021 (82 game pace):269 GF / 235 GA (+34) after 38 games

Especially with Koskinen out with covid... DOUBLY ESPECIALLY with Skinner, the best statistical Oilers goalie of the year (so far) sitting on the pine.

It's unbelievable they're starting Smith tonight. Never mind a call from above telling the coach to start Smith, Holland should be calling Tippett and telling him not to do that. I wouldn't start Smith two games in a row. Back to back nights should be out of the question. Considering Smith is a band aid, Koskinen obviously gets tired when over played, and Skinner is unproven I'd carry all three tenders for the rest of the year. Play Smith, Koskinen, Smith, Koskinen, Skinner. The old guy needs his rest dammit.

Hell, I'd probably get the fourth guy a start two just because.
