In fairness to Hall, I've wanted to throw a waterbottle at Eakins all season.

Full no move clause?!

Ha. Classic.

You can't always get what you want, but if you try sometimes, you just might find, you can get a lottery pick.

Best to hold off until we see the 7 year extension before getting mad. Save your energy.

He is exactly what the Oilers severely lack in their top 9.

You can sign a player for 8 years if he's already on your team. Just saying!

Well, the season might be toast, but atleast we didn't do anything embarrassing that we'll regret later.

No idea how they voided a $40m contract, but we can sign him immediately after?

Terrible human...My low bar for being a fan of the franchise since '06 has gone from Cup...to playoffs...to be competitive...to just don't embarrass me with off ice. This signing is not a step in the right direction.

It might be easy for folks in the Edmonton bubble where our sycophant media will keep regular fans from taking daily shots, but I have to live with a lot of fans from other hockey fanbases, that get their information from lots of sources. When the rumors were just swirling of a signing I was already fielding too many questions. This is going to be bad for off ice.

Hate the person, but I love the player. Now we got two parties that screw up everything they touch, the Oilers management group and Kane himself. Can two negatives make a positive?

So the answer isn't in the dressing room or is this just a free space on the GM card?

I'm in favor of this signing. While it's only 50/50 Kane will be in game shape by the end of the season, he does have something to prove, and this should tighten any nooses that are hanging

So.. has this "pro-rating" rule always been there, or is this another "One-off, Screw with the Oilers Special" by the NHL ?

His contract is stated as 750K + 625K signing bonus = 1.375M?

How does the cap hit get to 2.094 M?
Sounds like they imagine he was signed at the start of the season so they pretend he was paid for those imaginary games?
Even if you imagine prorating his contract over the season.. played 38 games so he's paid 750K for the rest of the year (44)
750K/44 = 17.045K/g
82 x 17.045 = 1.3977M + 625K(sb)= 2.0227M ?

Quote:

Signing Bonus 625K
Base Salary 750K
Actual Cash paid $974K

Due to pro-rating for signing during season w/ SB, Cap Hit/AAV is $2.094M

From CapFriendly:

How is the cap hit calculated for one year contracts signed after the start of the season?
If a player is signed to a one year contract after the start of the NHL season, that contract is subject to a unique cap hit calculation.

A notable aspect of the calculation is that the cap hit value is increased.

The cap hit is calculated as follows:
Cap hit = Signing bonus × total season days / season days remaining + base salary

Example:
Brogan Rafferty of the Vancouver Canucks signed a one year ELC on April 2, 2019. The contract has a base salary of $832,500, a signing bonus of $92,500, and there were 4 days remaining in the 186 day season:
Cap hit = $92,500 × 186 / 4 + $832,500
Cap hit: $5,133,750

so... could you sign someone for 1/82nd league minimum with only 1 gmae left? or do they still have to sign the full annual league minimum amount?

OK they base the calc on the number of days remaining in the season, not games.. thanks !

Kind of wonder then why they just didn't forget the SB (since its pro-rated) and reduce the cap?

This is of course the danger when you have senile old men running your cap. They just don't know this stuff until it bites them in the rear.

It probably would make sense for the team to have a capologist as well as an analytics department, but if you're paying $10-12MM for Lowe, Nicholson and Holland, then it's hard to fit that in the budget.

Also, Full NMC??? LOLZ. Why?!

I'm just not sure when you have a guy who's only coming for the rest of the season and you're still a bubble team, why you'd tie your hands completely on the possibility of trading him. It's not like it's a long list of teams who will want to pay for what they could have had for free at this point, but it still gives you options.

I wonder what the process looks like in the Edmonton Oilers head office when they're doing these stupid things.

It’s so that if the Oilers don’t make up ground and are in a position to sell at the TD, he can dictate where he goes. Big whoop on the clause. He makes the team better. Is he a crap person, sure maybe he isn’t someone to invest long term in. But he helps the team now

This makes the team less likeable.

I watched that whole interview and he comes off poorly to me. He's a victim, he's been mistreated by media, by unfaithful teammates telling stories about him, by people saying things like "where there's smoke there's fire", by Jeff O'Neill who he would fight if he played in the NHL still, by his abusive ex-wife. He was never unfaithful, never did any of the things accused of, never sexually assaulted anyone (he never actually addresses the lawsuit against him for that assault - and it's never asked about which is a weakness in the interview to me). He had a violation of Covid protocol at the end of the summer, but he won't say or confirm what it is. He doesn't even know what he could have done wrong at Christmas time with Vancouver - although he does admit that he knew he had covid and travelled 8 days later. The interviewer also doesn't ask him if he takes Covid seriously at all, which is probably another miss by her.

This just isn't a player I can have any excitement for him signing here, and I think the management bungling to get the worst possible cap treatment and a NMC is just icing on the cake.

I didn’t get a great vibe from the interview either. I’m a pretty critical eye on him though. I was hoping this whole thing would go away. Just have never liked him at all.

I think he will help the team this season, but I still don’t feel this team makes any noise this season. Then next season it will be life without Kane. I would rather it be life without Kane right now. I’m not sure it makes us any better the following season when he gone or heaven forbid still here.

And yes I will cheer when he helps us. And I fully expect this post of mine to be dragged up.

Yeah, I expect that will happen too.

I still think no forward moves are going to be that impactful if we don't have a real goalie.

Holland is playing 3D chess, in this case NMC stands for no more casinos.

I'll see myself out.

The Oilers should hire his PR team. They're pretty smart to get out in front of everything as much as possible and they're polishing him up as much as possible right now.

Dislike the player and I don't like that he's an Oiler, but you have to admire the job his agent is doing here.

I've never really heard him speak before, have to say he's pretty articulate, nothing like the image one gets from hearing all the media rumours. J. O'Neil sounds like a d-bag.
I'm pulling for him to get his life back on track.

One point of note, there was a rumour he was 1 of 4 Sharks that were unvaccinated before training camp, he stated he was not.

Could be 40 lbs overweight and still make it with our wing depth. Get him out there ASAP!

I think he'll play in Montreal. They have 3 games then a break for the all-star game.. I think you need to get him in before that.

Oh so that happened and I see that people are fully entrenched in their positions on Oilfans. Shocker. Let the venting continue! It's good for your mental health if that's the way its gotta be!

If he plays the way he can, big plus for the Oilers for 40 some games, plus playoffs. If he busts the NMC is problematic because can he be waived for assignment? To me I don't have a lot of emotion other than whether he helps the club on the ice. I haven't followed much, it was mentioned today that he has full custody of his child...Unless the mother is incarcerated or committed, I don't know how a purported douchebag pulls that off.

So refreshing for me personally to purposely cut back on pissing and moaning about at least the most trivial things beyond my control. It's difficult, but I'd recommend it to anyone

A team with any kind of positive culture would have never made this move. Sad day for the Oilers.

With Holloway getting ready in Bako the Kane addition will allow Yamo being dropped off of the top 6

Top 7 forwards

McDavid
Draisatl
Hyman
Kane
RNH
Puljujarvi
Holloway

LW
Kane
Hyman (LW/RW)
Holloway
RNH (LW/C)

RW
Hyman (LW/RW)
Puljujarvi

C
McDavid
Draisatl
RNH (LW/C)

Allows RNH to play 3rd line C, which with his PK, PP duty might work out for total ice time.
Hyman playing RW allows you to drop Yamo down
I think JP carries the puck more when he's with Leon, which is a benefit because with RNH & Yamo, LD had to carry the puck most of the time, and was getting double teamed. JP carrying the puck opens things up for Leon.
IMHO.

Don't like this move at all. The last thing a team like the Oil need is a walking PR disaster waiting to happen. I guess the only positive I can take out of this is that it could be the straw that gets Holland canned when it fails to pan out. Then again, we are talking about the Oilers here. Sometimes, being a fan of this team is nothing but pain dulled by apathy.

Nuge gets assists, Yamo and Foegele don't score = a line that cancels itself out.

What is Hyman's preferred position? Where is he strongest?

I really think Kane is going to be an unnecessary diversion on this team. Don't see him bringing anything this team needs. See him bringing baggage that isn't needed here no matter how much Stauff sells him. I hope I'm wrong.

Move out Kassian, Yamo, Foegele??? Hmmmm, mayyyybe.

Not that i figure this team will win the Cup this year, but if takes going full heel to do so, sure. Many of us watched wrestling as kids, so might as well do it and embrace it.
