Kostko channels his inner Mike Smith and gets caught wandering behind his net.

what team is 19 playing for?
this is absolutely terrible. The game is 100% goaltending if you don't have any. Koski is giving them ZERO.
who is the backup? and why isn't SKINNER back up here?
...this time, it's for real (isn't it?).

Many are afraid to anoint him, but Skinner, analytically, is the Oilers best goalie. So we know he’ll be a backup at best here and likely just be a Bako all star

Koskinen is such a loser.

I get he's the Oiler whipping boy this year, but he's 12-6-1, so that statement isn't very correct.

No, but it is his fault when he lets in a minimum of one backbreaking/team deflating goal per game.
His record= technically not a loser.
His stats, ability, technique= not a good goalie.
I also don't think he is the whipping boy, but legit not good enough to be a #1 goalie. Serious questions; are there any major problems you see stopping the team from winning, outside of the reffing?

I 100% agree. A lot of Oiler fans have become among the leagues worst in blaming the refs. In fairness I think those fans dont know what else to blame at this point.
NHL reffing isn't perfect but it isn't any worse against the Oilers than anyone else.
The simple fact is that as a group this team isn't good enough and it shows when the elite, high end talent doesnt get 5 PP chances a game.

I don't at all buy that 5 consecutive teams have been almost foul free on a team that employs the fastest player in the league. The odds of that are very low.
The problem with the refereeing is, the refs saw the Oilers dominate at the start of the year and felt that was unfair. They felt they were 'affecting' the outcome of the game. To try to not to 'affect' the outcome of the game, they just minimized the amount of penalties they call in Oilers games. Oilers are near the bottom of the league in both penalties taken and drawn. It's all fair right? Nobody is getting an advantage. The issue with that is the Oilers are purpose built to be ay an advantage on special teams. The PP is the best by a wide margin, and the PK is in the top half of the league. When penalties aren't called at all, the refs are determining the outcome. That was the issue in the playoffs last year. Refs put the whistles away and the Oilers lost their biggest advantage. That referees need to call the infractions as they happen. If it's 10 a night, thats fine. If it's 1 on the odd night, OK. What can't happen is they just stop making all altogether.

It’s not that they’re “purpose-built” for the man advantage. It’s that they’re not built well enough to compete with most teams unless they have an extra skater.

Koskinen is the same as he's always been. He's a semi solid but wildly unspectacular goalie with a couple of glaring weaknesses who happens to back up a mostly solid, but predictably injured starter. When the starter is around, Koskinen is easy to put on the shelf and forget about. When the starter is predictably injured Koskinen is just good enough to build hope before the inevitable downfall. Just look at the start of this season for an example. For as long as this duo has existed Oilfans has known it simply wasn't good enough to compete for the Stanley Cup, which should have been the goal for the entire time this duo has been together. That hasn't been the goal, of course. I couldn't say what the goal has been, but I know for certain the results were a maddening disappointment. I have a hard time blaming Koskinen for being what we thought he was before Tambellini re-signed him. I can blame the GMs and coaches who have somehow managed to overplay Smith AND Koskinen for three seasons now.
Meanwhile the Oilers have SKINNNNNNNER who... well, he's simply not ready for prime time. If he was the back up behind a good starter and a good defense, like Darth Vlader in Calgary, boy would it be exciting. Sadly he's third wheel behind an walking injury and a forgotten Fin on a big ticket. Hell, if the forgotten Fin was behind a good starter and good D, he'd be interesting too.
Why has no one has thought to regulate Smith's workload?

This is a key point when people defend Koskinen being a whipping boy. It isnt like he is anything different than every fan, pundit and other GM knew he was. It isn't his fault he is in a position to fail and doing it most nights.

The Oilers brass (above Chiarelli - although he likely too) believed that Koskinen was better than Talbot based on a couple small sample sizes - even as both Talbot's poor numbers and Koskinen's strong numbers both reverted to the norm. So they bet high with a super weird signing - long before it was needed, with a small sample size, and only a couple days before they fired the GM. Then they traded Talbot shortly after just to make sure he stopped proving them wrong (since his numbers post-Koskinen contract were much better than the big Finn's.
I think Koskinen isn't great, but he's not a complete disaster in a limited role. He might be decent in a Mathieu Garon kind of way - just fine as long as he has the no-pressure role of the back-up. Put him in too many games, and you see him sag every time.

Smith's workload is being managed carefully this year! He's only played 5 games, so he's likely to be fresh for the playoffs!

Shore drawing a penalty while on the PK just bought him a lot more playing time. Forget that it was a pretty weak call and I was 75% sure he was about to turn the puck over either way.

What was more surprising...?
McLeod making a rare visit to the front of the net?
or
Benson getting his first point of the YEAR?
or
McLeod actually putting that pass past the goalie as opposed to the middle of his chest?
