Connor McDavid will be in the lineup tonight against the New York Rangers.

We'll see how good his info is. Hopefully the rest of the team will show up to

Pretty good article from Nugent-Bowman in the Athletic today about the Oilers recent struggles. He calls out a bunch of bewildering roster decisions from Tippett, points out his playoff struggles and that he has somehow got a team with McDavid and Draisaitl to now be -10 at 5v5 on the season. But then says he's heard zero chatter that the coach's job is in danger from out of the organization at this point.

He suggests another move that the team could do to spark a change would be to make a trade - but points out that the GM hasn't made a non-deadline mid-season trade in his entire Oilers tenure to date, and that he has very little of value that the team is willing to part with, and that it would be hard to find someone who can make a big impact on the roster and fit under the cap.

So he says the only other option for the Oilers in order to right the ship is for McDavid and Draisaitl to just start scoring more again. Said that they've only been in the 1.0-1.2 points per game realm for the last ten or so games, and that earlier in the season they were scoring ~2.0 points per game. The powerplay was at 35%, but now it is clicking at a more pedestrian rate.

The problem with all of this of course is that this team is supposed to be a contender at this stage. We shouldn't have to rely entirely on super-human performances from our two stars in order to just win games. That should be what allows us to beat teams for fun and what gives us a great chance against the other good teams in the playoffs.

It's disturbing to see the Edmonton media in full defence of both Holland and Tippett right now. Usually, if there is change in the air, then those guys at least start going a bit quiet. The full-throated support from guys like Matheson suggests to me that the Oilers brass is just hoping they can ride this out and hope it just magically gets better.

At least McDavid is playing tonight...better chance of super-human performance with him in the lineup!!!

I sense an ugly loss coming up.

Not enough real NHL level players yet to to be competitive with the upper end of the NHL.

Speed, will, desire, size, skill .. all vital ingredients, too lacking in too many.

McDavid's super nova talent is even more amazing when he alone can drag a team like that into contention most nights.

Well, if the team is missing speed, will, desire, size and skill - isn't that on the GM? If there aren't enough real NHL players to be competitive with the upper end of the NHL, despite two of the best players in the world on the team - isn't that on the GM?

What would be the rationale for not firing a GM who's failed on those counts?

Previous GM drafting.
Defense prospects are excellent, under Holland, best in a generation, forwards need upgrading.
Hyman, LD, McD, JP, RNH, Foogle, all keepers.
Future is through ELC's.
Holland won't sell the farm, which I appreciate.

Except that Chiarelli is responsible for drafting Bouchard, Samorukov, Niemelainen. Broberg was the only defenceman picked in Holland's first two drafts with the Oilers. Munzenberger had a big role for Germany at the WJHC so maybe he's a future possibility, but right now the only guy at any position knocking on the door from the Holland drafts is Broberg (although who knows - maybe we'll get to see Konovalov in the next couple weeks).

It's probably still worth noting that Broberg was selected instead of Trevor Zegras who has 38 points in 54 games as a rookie with the Ducks.

Of everything you mentioned, only Hyman (high-priced UFA) and Foegele (overpayment in trade) were Holland acquisitions.

Holland's acquired or re-signed everyone in the bottom half of the team. Really, everyone outside of McDavid, Draisaitl and Koskinen now. I don't think you can blame Chiarelli any more for this mess. If there's not enough talent here - that's very clearly on the shoulders of Holland.

My Wings fan friend warned me that we were out of the pan and into the fire when we canned Chiarelli and got Holland. I thought he was just looking for someone to blame like any fan.

Well after the Keith trade and the Nurse deal...well...I sent him a txt telling him he was right and I was wrong.
