2 years, AAV of 1.25M.

Not sure if they see him as a third line centre or fourth line centre, but a solid signing either way. Would prefer him as a fourth line centre, but might provide a little cover if they can't land a 3C, and should take a little pressure off of Ryan McLeod in that role.

I like this signing. He had a down year last year and is a little older, but I've been a fan of his incredibly unorthodox path to the NHL, an undrafted American that played for U of A after juniors, then worked his way up through a couple European leagues before getting his NHL shot. I had a few friends who are Flames fans that really liked him.
Weird that it was for 2 years, would have thought he could only get a one year deal at this point.

I think this is a much better version of the Turris signing. Ryan at least works hard and can play defense. His history suggests you can actually give him some tough ice time now and then and he doesn't just helplessly drown like guys in our bottom 6 always do. The cap hit is right, and adding a veteran C to our bottom 6 was an absolute must. McDavid still will probably need to take the bulk of the tough competition ice time, but Ryan is probably better than anyone we've had to fill that role in a pinch. The kind of situations that we saw Khaira getting scored on within 10 seconds of a faceoff in our end.

I like this, he's the type of depth player you need, always noticed him on the ice with the Flames.
Might not have the flat-out wheels, but still won't be a liability out there. Hopefully Tippett feels comfortable taking a few minutes a night off the TOI for 97 & 29 with this...

Yeah, maybe not a FO specialist.. but even 50% is a lot better than what the Oil had last year beyond LD.

I thought American UFAs would never sign here? I don’t mind this. Just stunned it’s not for $3m with a NMC.

Generally happy with this signing. You knew eventually the Oilers had to get SOMETHING right. Can bury the contract if all goes poorly, so it's the best move of the month for the team.

Certainly in the conversation.
Only ones to me that would be considered decent would be the RNH contract and Barrie's term and cap number.
The rest range from bad to historically awful. I don't understand your love for the Keith deal. Nothing against Keith personally, but all things considered (player, return, cap hit, timing, contract, team needs, etc...), that is one of the worst deal in franchise history. I am still not sure if you're joking or not when you profess your love for that deal.

I truly love the acquisition. Yes, I’m not blind to the fact there sure as shoot should have been retention, but I’m also quite low on Caleb Jones where I know the bulk of you are rather high on him.
The defence got an overhaul. The coaching staff, and perhaps those players up front, clearly had some trust issues with certain players as we saw in that final game.
The forward group is quite frankly one of, if not the best, the Oilers have had since the early 90s.
You know what you’re getting with schmiddy. Hes gonna work his tail off and give you 40 solid starts while being capable of giving the lads in front of him a fighters chance in the playoffs. The guy he shares the net with currently? I don’t know how they bring him back.
I’m a big Barrie guy. Love that he’s back. Bouchard doesn’t NEED to be Barrie right now which is perfect. I still think they bring someone in to pair with Bouch at 3LD. And I truly think y’all will be pleasantly surprised with CC
I’m a big fan of this team and how they look currently on paper.

I'm quite optimistic as well. I think we could pull off three legit lines if you put rnh back to 3c, I doubt it happens but he doesn't have to be a winger at this point.

Well the good news for you is that I’m wrong more often than I’m right when it comes to prognosticating hockey. I really really hope to be eating crow and lots of it.
That said, none of that bird will be for the Keith deal. I don’t mind having him here. My issue was the timing. He can win the Norris and it won’t make that deal any better all things considered.
I agree the forward group does look better and even has some room for surprises from the likes of McLeod, Benson, Marody, and Holloway.
On D, i guess wait and see. I think they’ll get mostly slaughtered, but could see Keith and Ceci maybe surprising me.
But in goal? How do we go into yet another season with these 2? With all the guys that were out there in free agency and through trades, going in with Smith and Koskinen is an abject failure. Saying you have no money left to sign a goalie does not absolve you.

Appreciate that Mike.
I too, could be totally wrong 😂 but I think Keith-Ceci will be a solid pair for us. I’m interested to see who they bring in to pair with Bouch, I don’t think it’ll just be laggy or Kowboy.
I understand the timing aspect of Keith deal wasn’t ideal. Heck, they could have protected Larss had they not done it when they did on top of likely being more able to actually squeeze Bowman to retain. However, I strongly believe we would have lost Larss either way ... and holding off on Keith to protect Larss would have just delayed Larss departure to today which may very well have made us lose out on Barrie and Ceci, or any of the other various FAs. When I think about it that way, I feel much better about the timing of it.
Schmiddy/Kosk tandem definitely is terrifying, I can’t hide it. I have zero confidence in Koskinen. All I can say is they have been ‘okay enough’ as a tandem to get us to the playoffs lately.
Being the Derek Ryan thread, I’ll steer it back there: the early bet is Ryan anchoring the 3rd line, and it has the makings of a pretty slick 3rd line. Foegel-Ryan-Kassian would be a line that could effectively do it all. Expect Ryan to pair with Nuge on the Pk (taking JJ’s spot) also. I like this signing, not as much as Bab Staffer, but I do really like it.

That is a very optimistic 3C projection of an undrafted FA with below average size, speed and defensive play. (And I'll be honest, I had to look up who he even is.)
Do you have some inside insights on the player to make the assertion that he should get minutes ahead of an established all-around NHL guy in Ryan? He also sounds like a scoring/skill prospect - which is not at all what Ryan is signed for.

yeah you have 2 year deal on an old past it guy when you could give a chance to a skilled player with potential in that position. id prefer the team looked forward rather sign a guy who will be 35 in december. check out his tape. kid can play.

Is there tape of him playing NHL games against NHL players? Because there is for Ryan.
Burns could turn out amazing, and that would be awesome, but even if he turns into an NHL player I don't think he does it in the next 2 seasons. If he doesn't play in the NHL then it is not because the Oilers signed Derek Ryan. Ryan was also undrafted and it took him years to get to the NHL. Seems like Ryan is who Burns would hope to someday become.

This is how I see it too. Burns would likely not play on the big team even if he went supernova in camp. UDFAs are projects. At this point, the Oilers are looking (not always in the right place LOL) for ways to win NOW, during McDavid's window. It's not about "forward" - it's about "now".
EDIT: There was also tape of Puljujarvi (and Yakupov) looking like elite, straight-to-the-NHL guys. One took three years to get there, and one took three years to basically be done in the league.

Ryan has still been holding his own with tough ice time against top players. I don't think Burns will have any shot at all to fill that role for us even if he makes it on the roster by some miracle. More likely he's gonna be fighting for attention to just get a 2-way deal to develop in the AHL.
