I hope this game is a preview of how a playoff series between these two teams will go, assuming that the reffing doesn't turn into total doggy doo-doo. On to Calgary.

Good to see Koskinen getting the win after a long sit.

I hope he lights up the Flames tomorrow.

Hopefully it doesn't go like the last meeting between those 2 teams did....

Good job quietly shutting down the Jets and getting a routine win.
I'll bet the house on Flames tomorrow, though.

The Flames game is one where I hope for no injuries more than anything. In fact, with so many out-of-contention games left vs Van/Cgy - my biggest fear is that someone like Giordano will be up to their old tricks.

That's a fine start for Koskinen after sitting for 2 or 3 weeks. Made a pretty big stop early. Just a calm night though pretty much in their own end, most of the chances outside. Koskinen has had tougher games with a goal against.
Aside from Koskinen and d zone, fine night 5on5 just playing in the Jets zone. All the pundits giving the Jets love over the Oilers still, but their D is the Achiiles heel, they'll give up chances on the rush like the other night especially if you get up by a couple, and they can be exploited on the cycle.
To me there's little reason the Oilers don't advance if they face these guys and play smart hockey like these last couple games.

Satisfying win. Feels like a playoff team right now.
Kulikov showed his warts tonight. Hopefully we see more of game 1 out of him from here on out.

That's more like it!
Matthews 59 points. McDavid 56 assists. Making up ground. McDavid can still do it for the 4th time!

We've been spoiled getting to watch this man play. All that's left is to see him hoist the Cup over his head (in an Oil jersey, of course).

Taking a longer look at the league standings and I am seeing some interesting things.
About half the way through the season, the Oilers were leading the league in GF, but in 20th-ish spot in GA. That is not traditionally a good recipe for playoff success.
Looking now, the Oilers are 10th in GF and T6 in GA. Goal differential actually remains much the same, but it seems like they have put more emphasis on defence (and Smith has been a beast). It just feels like a better system come playoff time.
I also notice the Oilers are 3rd in regulation wins. It just seems the top teams have found a way to stretch more games in OT (both wins and losses). I don't know if thats a good or bad thing. I also don't know if that's just by chance.

One thing hasn't dropped from last year to this for Oilers. Last season they were No. 1 on PP, this year they are No. 2 behind Carolina.

Pretty solid game for the Oilers. Got good goaltending, special teams scored timely goals, defensively they played fairly stingy, had a physical edge. To win in the playoffs you usually have to grind it out rather than run and gun. That's exactly what they did and that's how you win in the playoffs.
Kulikov had a few bad giveaways but it's his second game on a new team. They will happen. Better to get them out now.
I thought Neal looked better. That is not saying a hell of a lot but it's probably the best he looked skating wise in my opinion. I am not sure I would keep him in when Khaira comes back but in the playoffs, you need options.
I thought Kahun looked decent again on McD's line. He seems to know how to play with McD. Get McD the puck, get the hell out of the way, be ready. He can pass the puck pretty well and seems to have offensive skill. Knows how to get back defensively which is important when playing with McD. It's only 2 games but so far so good.
I thought last night was one of the better games for Nuge in a while, even before the injury. They need to get him going.
I thought Koskinen was excellent. Hadn't played in a long time, comes in and was very good.
The team looks good, looks like they know how to play. Looks like they are capable of grinding it out and locking it down when you need too or they can play run and gun. While not elite, I don't see a glaring hole on defense. I think they have 2 goalies who are not elite but playing well and capable of giving the team good starts. I am pretty happy at the moment.

Connor McDavid is having the ninth best season ever in points adjusted for era, via

. Only Gretzky and Lemieux ahead of him.
Simply incredible what he's doing. He'll win Hart in landslide.

I think Koskinen is perfectly suited to play a game once in a while. He certainly cannot handle the load of a full time tender. Playing 20 - 30 games on a 82 game regular season is in his wheelhouse. This season playing a handful of games less, playing in the teens seems to work for him. He is certainly not our tender of the future.
I thought Kulikov played way better in the 3rd and seems to redeem himself after a tense 2nd and 3rd.
McDavid. Need I say more. Does he get to a 100 points in 56 games? Does he? Maybe and if it's McDavid who can control his own destiny wills it, he will get it.
The very definition of insanity is doing the exact same thing expecting different results.
Generally Disappointed.

I can't remember what the numbers are exactly because I heard it on the radio broadcast last night but since Smith has come back, Koskinen in the games he's played since then is over .920% in his starts. So I think he is a goalie who is a perfect back up for any team. He's more than capable of giving you over 30 good starts. last season he played in 38 games and was .917 which is good. The problem is I don't think he is capable of playing too many more than that. Maybe going 50-50 with a guy tops. His biggest issue is his contract. Chia gave him way too much. I look at the market last year and any of the proven back ups were getting well over 3. So if was making around 3 mill, it would be fine. 4.5 mill is too much.

The Jets have had a perfect mix of puck luck and Helly saving the day to hide pretty poor play for over half this season. Since we seem to be able to get to Helly this year this really should be a favorable matchup for us.
WPGChief @WPG_Chief
