Last one. I think it will be the toughest of all to win just because beating a team 9 times in a row is incredibly hard to do no matter how bad they are. Find a way boys!!

TSN claimed during last nights game that Forsberg and Smith start tonight. You can bet your house that Forsberg will have a worldie for sure.

From here on in, just keep winning till we can't be caught by 5th place. I'm guessing another 10 points might be enough for that.

Hey, might actually catch some of the first period this game. The Leafs must not be playing tonight. After that BS start time yesterday, I'm more motivated to cheer this year's Leafs playoff collapse.

Anyway, LFG Oilers.

Normal reminder that the Senators aren't a good team, and we should put the boots to them. Again.

41 points for McDavid and Draisaitl between them against Ottawa this season. It would be great to see them reach 50.

Has the Oilers PP2 scored any goals this year?

There is no second powerplay. There's just Nurse and Puljujarvi who sometimes come on late to spell off Barrie and Chiasson. And yes - that unit has scored, but it's 60% of PP unit 1.

They deployed a Kassian-Turris-Puljujarvi-Nurse-Bear unit for a good chunk of, I think it was the second powerplay, yesterday afternoon.

Those are the shifts at the very end of the PP as we're gearing up to go back to 5v5...either that or games where we have huge leads and have decided to bench McDavid and Draisaitl for scoring too much.

Yeah, that Calgary blowout where Connor had 5P with half a game to go or something like that, there was a whole debate over whether which embarrasses Cowtown more.....running up the score even more, or running your 4th liners out on the PP? I don't recall the PP being bad enough even in isolated incidents the last 2 seasons for Tip to go with other guys to send a message, but I could be wrong.

3 Cups

Lines for tonight based on Gregor.

Draisaitl – McDavid – Puljujarvi
Kahun – RNH – Yamamoto
Kassian – Turris – Chiasson
Shore – Khaira – Archibald

Nurse – Barrie
Russell – Larsson
Jones – Bear

Smith

I would swap Kassian for Kahun. I just don't think a line with Kahun (5'11, 175), Nuge (6'0, 184), Yamo (5'8, 153) can succeed. As scrappy as Yamo can be, I think you need at least some size on that line to muck in corner, go hard to the net and just bring some size to the line. I might even swap JP and Yamo to give Nuge 2 bigger guys on his wing.

Whew, was scared we might play Bouch.

Definitely want to see more Larsson/Russel pair getting caved 5v5.

Larsson has been ok more often than terrible. Russell is wildly unpredictable from game to game or even shift to shift. They would be an ok third pairing.
It scares me that I only think they are ok but are multiple times better than Jones/Bear. Both of them have been nothing good pretty much every game for a long time.

Good thing the tending has been good for a while now. That top 6 is not good at all. Barrie is not great in our own end but he has actually been better than I expected. I wish we had the depth to shelter him a little more on a second pairing. After the first week Nurse has been great for the most part. If Barrie gets a big payday as an FA he should be giving Nurse a cut for helping him look fine on a top pairing.

I don't think the possession metrics support that at all. The last couple games, Russell/Larsson has got just destroyed. Way, way more shots against than shots for. Hunker down, hope for the best, off the glass and out if you get a chance, rinse, repeat.

Bear and Jones have been guilty of a few giveaways, but they aren't getting destroyed to the same level.

I am not a fan of Russell in there either and would like to see Bouchard get in but that means sitting a right shot. It's pretty clear from earlier in the season Tippett wants no part of flipping Barrie, Larsson or Bear to the left since he decided to play the rookie Bouchard to the left over the vets. I think it does Bouchard a rookie a disservice to play him on his offside. He would have enough to worry about learning the NHL game, I don't want to pile on the extra of having to play the off side.

The team is in winning mode, at least in the mind of the coach and I assume the players especially McD and Leon. They are in second place so I assume they want to keep that spot and keep winning. Like it or not, Barrie, Larsson and Bear have been the ones to get them here for the most part. For the most part, the Oilers have been a pretty good team with those 3 in there. So who sits for Bouchard?
Barrie who's playing over 20 mins a night, runs your PP and 3rd in dmen scoring.
Larsson who's a vet, one of the few guys on defense who has size and is hard to play against plus he kills penalties AND he's been really good since about game 10.
Bear who is a spreadsheet darling, was one of your top 4 guys last year and has been OK.

Who are you sitting for Bouchard and what are you telling the team especially McD and Leon the reason? The 3 I listed have helped the Oilers win a lot of games and have you in second. I would assume every player knows who's hurt, who's not, who can't play and who can. So if your 2 big boys see one of the 3 I listed above out for Bouchard and they know those 3 can play, what do you tell them as a coach? I don't know them personally but I would guess that future development of a player is not high on their list of care, they want to win and it doesn't matter if it's lowly Ottawa, they want to win the game and keep things going. So telling McD and Leon we are sitting one of those 3 who are playing well just to get the rookie in probably wouldn't go over well no matter what spreadsheet you pull out or how you describe that in time, BOuchard can do this, this and that and will probably take over Barries job and be as good or better in X years from now. I am going to guess they are more focused on the here and now.

I am not here to stir the pot or cause problems but I keep seeing this "get Bouchard in" over and over again and I keep asking the question, who are you sitting that is playing well and how do you sell that to the team who's focus is most likely the here and now.

I would give Barrie a "maintenance" day off... once the OIL are firmly in 2nd or 3rd spot. I don't see that it would be a noticeable downgrade. And are the OIL actually going to give Barrie the money he thinks he's worth to be on the team next year? Money that could be spent on LW for 97. Considering it is not in TIPPETT's DNA to trust rookies with anything.

...this time, it's for real (isn't it?).

Lines for tonight based on Gregor.

Draisaitl – McDavid – Puljujarvi
Kahun – RNH – Yamamoto
Kassian – Turris – Chiasson
Shore – Khaira – Archibald

Nurse – Barrie
Russell – Larsson
Jones – Bear

Smith

I would swap Kassian for Kahun. I just don't think a line with Kahun (5'11, 175), Nuge (6'0, 184), Yamo (5'8, 153) can succeed. As scrappy as Yamo can be, I think you need at least some size on that line to muck in corner, go hard to the net and just bring some size to the line. I might even swap JP and Yamo to give Nuge 2 bigger guys on his wing.

Kahun looked unusually engaged last night. It was weird.

Heard on the radio Nuge is out tonight. Not sure with what. Sounds like Haas is in for him.

Not surprised. He’s looked not right for some time now. Hopefully having next week off allows him to recover. Barrie looks off too. It’s almost time to give some guys the odd night off in preparation for the playoffs.

Gregor was saying he took a hit late in the game. I didn't see it.

Hopefully it’s nothing serious, but Nuge has looked off all year. Double clutching his stick, dusting off the puck for an extra second. I want a reason why. I want Nuge to be a lifetime Oiler, but right now if he thinks a 7M+ winger/2nd line centre he’s surely mistaken.

Showed the replay and he took a shoulder off the chin last game. I don't know if that was it.

If you don't play the combo that was the Oilers best line last year, you keep that AAV down though, no? Silver lining. icon_wink My guess is the next contract looks similar to maybe a modest raise. Maybe term is the issue, I don't know.

Probably time to move Kahun out of the lineup. LD couldn't move the needle with him either.
