On a side note...this might be an unpopular opinion, but we don’t deserve McDavid.

We are so lucky to have him. If I wasn’t snipped I would have one more kid and name them Connor, regardless of gender.

He needs success in Edmonton. So good.

We probably don't deserve him. But Buffalo DEFINITELY did not deserve him :) Ridiculous tanking that year kicking out goalies that dared to make saves. And ownership even worse with their meddling than ours.

Wonder if he would still be a Saber if the draft didn't change.

A win and the type of game we needed after being away from the ice for the last week. It took some time to shake the dust off, but they battled through everything eventually got the rewards. We can now start to move forward again and regain some of that belief in our game that vanished into thin air of late.

I'm also trying to remember at any point during the game did Cuthbert or Campbell actually give any sort of praise/credit to the OIlers? It has to be the most anti home commentary that I've heard for a national broadcast.

If you ever wonder why Cassie Campbell is such a massive Flames homer, look no further than who she's married to:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brad_Pascall

Dude is literally the Assistant GM of the Flames. It's pretty disgraceful that Sportsnet keeps going back to Campbell on the national broadcasts, given her close relation to the team. I saw someone online comparing it to Karen Percy doing the colour for the Oilers game.

If you want her doing games, have her do Eastern ones without Calgary involved.

It worked this time. But, wow, I really don't like 29/97 on the ice or on the bench together. TIPPET is hurting the team not going back to 93,29,56. I'm sorry for stating the obvious over and over. icon_neutral

Have to say, Schmiddy played well. Flames brought it early and though their chances weren’t super high danger, he kept the door closed till their first pp then he kept the game within reach as it went on.

That's a big regulation win against a team that had to be kept down. Connor delivers with the sweet sound of tink, tink, goal. After the tough 1st where they could have been down multiple, Yams and Jesse getting on the sheet again, against what looked like an obviously motivated Lame team. Nurse and Neal show the some pulse, love it.

Koodos to Smith, on the 2nd he didn't shut the 5 hole on time and was possibly screened a bit by Russell, but great game. This team needs that kind of goaltending if they want to go anywhere, it's going to boil down to that.

Would have loved to see Leon score but some guys got picked up, and that was probably the idea. Leon needs to be back in the 2C ultimately. Get on another run, boys.

Well Calgary is clearly trash. Losing three times in a row to the same team like that must be embarrassing!

We should just enjoy it now while it lasts, as I suspect that the next time we meet them it will not be the same once Sutter starts cracking the whip on their roster.

One of the under-the-radar things that entertained me from Saturday night was the evolving narrative from the not-so-good Edmonton sports media during the game.

Fresh off a couple days spent in vociferous defence of Robert Tychkowski for his stupid and inane questions to Draisaitl (complete with an idiotic inside pitch analogy that they all used), it was clear the early narrative was going to be about Draisaitl if the Oilers lost and about Sutter if the Flames won. Here's Mark Spector:

Flames are banging. They know the Jolly Rancher is watching.

A needless, selfish penalty so often results in a goal. Doesn't it?

Tanev erases Turris, a clean, hard check.
The blue team needs more of just about everything, if they're gonna beat the red team tonight.

Quote:

@SportsnetSpec

That's the second selfish penalty of the night for Draisaitl. Take a number, man.

Sadly, that narrative wouldn't hold up. McDavid and Draisaitl were dominant when paired together and so now it was critical to find another story line:

Quote:

Mark Spector
@SportsnetSpec

Monahan and Gaudreau one shot on net each.
The trend here is EDM's stars outplaying CGY's more often than not. A feisty game like this one has never been Gaudreau's cup of tea.

Gaudreau had of course drawn the earlier penalty on Draisaitl that Spector had lamented, and had scored that powerplay goal too.

Good Lord. When you put it this way, it really highlights how useless and stupid easy it is to be a member of the hockey media. These guys truly add nothing to the game or the experience. It's basically fan fiction.

Has Spector been on TV much lately? I don't recall seeing him just this year, but he was on last game for the intermission. That was a shame.

That's only true if you think they exist to provide insight to the game. If you think of them as an outsourced public relations team, their inane narratives make a lot of sense.

Question: if the Oilers don't make the playoffs or look bad again losing out who do you think takes the blame? Holland? Tippett? McDavid? Draisaitl?

Just some top flight analysis here by the former president of the PHWA. I don't know if anyone here knows this, but Johnny Gaudreau is not as good of a hockey player as Connor McDavid.

And Monahan is probably Calgary's 5th or 6th best player at this point if you include Markstrom.

18/19: 232 GF / 274 GA (-42)
19/20 (82 game pace): 257 GF / 254 GA (+3) in 64 games
2021 (82 game pace):269 GF / 235 GA (+34) after 38 games

Well, Eric Francis wrote almost exactly the same takes in his story, so it must be true, right?

It is funny that there's a high barrier to entry for those positions when the people in those positions are so decidedly mediocre. Surely they could replace people like Spector every year with a new grad from journalism school or a talented blogger.

I still think it's really funny that Matheson was a little peeved at the Athletic for not trying to hire one of the Edmonton Old Boys when they were setting up their roster.

In case you weren't done laughing at Edmonton media for today, here's David Staples spreadsheet on his rankings for Oilers Performance Rankings:

https://pbs.twimg.com/media/Ev_fm30U8AMkgBV?format=jpg&name=medium

It's becoming one of the Laws of Oilers Twitter that anything that David Staples says is wrong...
