Still 1st period... D. Holloway already has THREE (3) pts!!! 1G plus 2 A's

If game ended now.. he'd have 7G 14A = 21 pts, in 12 games...

Nope not tonight.. TSN plays some college games at random, that's why I put a <News Flash> thread so I could post in "Oilers" to let people know the Oiler prospects games are on..

So ... ANOTHER update.. D. Hollaway finishes the night (against the No. 2 ranked team in the NCAA) with FIVE (5) pts, 1G 4A .. for a 23 pt season in 12 games. most of the points in the last few games.. he's playing unreal, dominates out there as a 19 year old.

If the kid had played the same games as Caulfield he'd have around 43 pts, more than Caulfield, and a year younger.

Heck even with Nuge staying as a winger and Holloway as 3C or 2LW, gets my Oilers pants tight.

I agree he can play as center or, because we have our #1 and #2 C's already for a long time to come, to get him top 6 minutes he'll need to go as a winger, with his top end skill, speed, and hound dog tenacity, he'll be gold. He can also play top PK minutes, and also a snipe as a winger on the PP... <PING> bar down and in !!

Pounded 2 PP goals, NHL level snipes. Can you imagine both Leon and Holloway on either side of a goaltender on a PP firing BOMBS top shelf? .. I can! icon_nod
Holloway just looks so polished out there, he's playing with/against guys up to 4 years older and stands out. I really wonder if another year i NCAA will would help or hold him back.. probably should go pro, he could step in and replace Kahun and be an upgrade, snipe shot, fast or faster than Leon, defensively sound, a more physical. better on retrieving pucks, working the cycle, and his face off winning percentage is off the map.. He could play LD's wing and play PK as well.

Bette rplay would be to move RNH back with LD, and move up Holloway with McD, he'd be sniping sweet McD feeds ALL night long!

Holloway did look great. For his age his skating is very strong.

Number 4 seemed to be everywhere in the offensive zone. He showed maturity beyond his years, considering he is 19 and playing against players who are mostly older.

His ability on faceoffs is remarkable.

From the very small samples of his play that I have seen - the WJC where he was playing hurt and a couple of the NCAA games on TV - his play in the defensive zone wasn't highlighted, probably because he was controlling the play in the offensive zone. He will have to be able to play a 200 foot game in the pros, but he may be able to already.

Just how good is Dylan Holloway's current point pace?

Here is how his PNHLe ranks against other NCAA prospects over the past ~15 years (min. 15 GP).

Wow, there are some really GOOD players on that list. If Holloway can even be like Jaden Schwartz who all he does when healthy is up up 20+ goal, 50+ point season then sign me up. Anything more, bonus.

I think it's a given he will be signing a pro deal when college is over and at worse go to Bakersfield to play some games. There is a spot on Leon's line waiting for him.

Just how good is Dylan Holloway's current point pace?

Here is how his PNHLe ranks against other NCAA prospects over the past ~15 years (min. 15 GP).

https://pbs.twimg.com/media/EvPsfAWWgAQrmDu?format=jpg&name=small

Pts per game is actually higher than Eichel..
Eichel 71/40= 1.775
Holloway 33/18= 1.833 icon_nod

Interestingly in Gudreau's best college season he was over a year older than Holloway..

You might say he's looking OK!

Holloway for Eichel! Buff needs to retain some salary obviously.

You can't always get what you want, but if you try sometimes, you just might find, you can get a lottery pick.

Stauffer had Wisconsin coach T. Ganato on his show today, give it a listen, talked about Holloway at length, raved about him, discussed going pro, Granato sounds like a good coach, knows what he has to do, why the better players come to play NCAA, to play pro.. interesting to see if Holloway comes over end of season..

I don't know if I totally bye his comment about how the better players play NCAA. I haven't looked but I'd say if you went down the list of the NHLs top players, most probably didn't play NCAA. If he wanted to say the better American players generally go the NCAA, I could agree with that.

I did like how he felt Holloway was pretty much pro ready. I think he signs as soon as the college season is over.

I don't recall him saying that, he'd be wrong if he did, he did say that his job is to make the players pro ready and that his ultimate goal n developing a player is that when they leave their program they don't have to spend any time in the AHL and can go straight to NHL... I think what he said was that he thought the NCAA was a better place to develop than going too early not making the NHL team, and then bouncing around in the AHL for a few years..

I must have heard him wrong then. I don't agree with his sentiment. I think he is speaking with some bias of wanting one of his star players not to turn pro after this season. The College game and lifestyle is way different than the pro game even in the AHL. Pros play more games and get less practice time. Now the AHL has changed a little recently where they play a few less games and practice more but it still doesn't compare to a college season. Part of being a pro is balancing your life and hockey. I also think the level of competition in the AHL is much higher. P. Russell who is a borderline NHLer but good AHLer was a point per game college player his last season. I am sure there are lots of guys on college teams who are really good college players but can't get higher than the AHL.

Plus in the AHL, you would be going up against older guys who this is their livelihood. They aren't making the NHL so if they don't play well and hard, they could be out of a job. So they are going to come at those young guys hard. So I wonder, is the 3rd yr college player on a lesser school who knows he's not getting drafted, has that guaranteed 1 more year of college hockey left but once he finishes his senior year, he's probably done high end hocking coming at the young college player as hard as the 29 yr old free agent AHLer needing another contract to stay in North America? Hard to say but my guess would be no he isn't.

Yeah but a lot of those seniors are 22 23 years old.. and they are all busting it to win, one advantage of NCAA is these schools have the best strength and conditioning coaches in the world as an extension of their football programs and all the other sports they support.. world class track & field, basketball, swimming, wrestling .. list goes on and on..

Graduating players direct to the NHL is something that helps a program recruit.. the top junior players have a lot of options, you don't want to be regarded as standing in the way of a player graduating early and going to the NHL.. it might hurt your team for the next year, but it'll boost your recruiting credibility and program profile..

To your first point it depends on the school and the priority they put on hockey. For many hockey is pretty far down the list and when budget time comes they dont get the same quality as big ticket sports like basketball and football.
A player I coached a few years back played 3 years of NCAA. His first year he went to a school that saw hockey only slightly above a rec sport. They had to work out at 6AM or wait in line at the strength and conditioning room until the football team was done. No other athletes were allowed in until the football team cleared out. He transferred the next year to a "hockey school" and couldn't believe the difference. They were treated like royalty. Nutritionist just for the hockey team. Private weight area with skating treadmills and such. Night and day.
The good news is Wisconsin does seem to put the effort and cash into hockey so I am sure your point is true for Holloway.

The second point is huge. NCAA recruiting is a crazy game and having names you can put forward as success stories is worth big dollars to a program.
Having a guy like Holloway go from a reach pick (to some) to a massive improvement is big ace in hole when in a recruiting tug of war with other schools.
I am sure Granato and Wisconsin will do everything they can to help Holloway be a successful pro.

Totally fair points. It is sure nice to be talking about a guy who looks pretty legit and is putting up numbers on par with some pretty high end guys.

A talented, 6'1, 203, skates like the wind, scoring forward who has some edge to his game who can play center or wing and when at center he's great at draws. Yes please!!

Tony Granato was an absolute trainwreck of an NHL coach. He's the guy that blew it when the Avs got Kariya/Selanne for dirt cheap. They made the mistake of saying at the press conference when they were signed that they were looking forward to playing together. Granato said soon afterwards that players don't get to decide their linemates and he NEVER played them together - instead banishing Selanne to the fourth line and saying he had to "earn his icetime" as Selanne failed to light it up playing 10 minutes a night with goons and checkers.

Looks like he learned his lesson, in NCAA he knows he's selling finished pro products (for recruiting) as well as trying to win games..
