6 goals on 26 shots. That seems bad, no?

Hard to win games when you need to score 7 to have a chance.
|
Harder when every time you get close you stop playing and let guys have free 1 timers in front of your goalie. These are games were everyone is finding a way to lose. It's the Oilers way
|
These Oilers do have an Eakins-style defense that really prioritizes open shots from the slot or in-tight tips.
|
You're right they never pressure the point men.
The theory for that scheme is that your goalie will get the point shots.. but our goalie is not like other goalies.
|
Don't pressure points. Can't protect the slot. Not sure what these guys do.

The problem is that that approach is what sunk us in the playoffs. It only works if you A) tie up sticks and don't allow many tips, B) goalie makes actual saves and C) doesn't spill rebounds back up the middle.
There's been defensive errors for sure - but Koskinen just seems like he rarely makes game-saving stops. If the other team gets a good chance, it's in the net.
We do need a 2006-esque run of trades with a Spacek, Tarnstrom and Roloson snapped up here...

On a normal team Koskinen is out after the third goal. Unfortunately we have a low end ECHL guy as replacement. And our savior coming back from injury is likely AHL quality about to be broken again.
Bummer last offseason to be a team that can only get a new goalie via UFA

That Lucic goal in the 2nd was a game breaker, Oilers only let 5 shots at that point and had control of the game. Shows how one bad shift can turn the tide of a game.

Our goalie situation is just the worst. Unless it's a Grade C opportunity, there's a pretty decent chance that it's going in the net.
Mikko is not terrible, but he's not a starting goaltender in the NHL.

What useless team effort, only guys to show up were Pulju and McD.
Sadly that's the best you'll get out of some of those guys.

On the bright side.. (c'mon there's always a brightside!)
D. Holloway has a 5 pt night vs Minnisota (#2 ranked team), now has 23 pts in 12 games.. kid might even win the Hobey Baker!
If he wins, or even is nominated, should drop out of NCAA for next season, play pro.
