Oilers claim 31 year old Goalie Trevor Grosenik from LA. Undrafted and a journeyman AHLer.

Literally 50% of his NHL starts are shutouts. We're gonna need a bigger checkmark.

I would have used a bigger image, but IIRC, I think someone on here uses a 480p monitor still, so don't want to make their PC explode icon_biggrin

Not bad plan C.. still thought Forsberg might turn into a solid option by the end of the season.. won't find out now..
Looks like Grosenick's had good numbers everywhere he's gone.. an experienced farmhand.. good hedge for Skinner and Rodrigue..

..a Roughriders alumni

https://www.eliteprospects.com/player/31625/troy-grosenick

Oilers might still reclaim Forsberg later if he comes loose Holland said he wanted an extra guy for Bakersfield this year, plus we'd likely want 3 up north of the border full time.. so the journey may not be over for Peters nephew..

I'm guessing we'll put a claim in for him. At least NHL calibre.

Dell has a one-way, gets 800k NHL or AHL, Grosenick has a 2-way, gets 700k up, 350k down.

Oilers don't have much cap left, it would be tight..

Not sure what Toronto is doing, clearing some space, Spezza is also waived, compared to our current line up could we use him as a #4 C for 700k ?

Yeah but then he'll be back, I heard they expect him to be back playing after the 10 game LTIR..
We lost Forsberg -700 (1-way), but gained Grosenick +700 (2-way), and we'd have to add Dell +800 (1-way).. not sure how much space we have left.. I'd add Spezza as well if we could, at 700k he's better than some of what we have..

Spezza's agent has said he will retire if claimed.
Even so, I think he is done, the Oilers dont have much outside of the top 6 but I dont think Spezza is any kind of solution.

You are right, I think they have had some good shifts as well. I phrased that poorly.

When I say top 6 I mean the top 6 good, fully useful players. Not easily replaceable or usually frustrating or filling a spot only because its the best option for now

MCDavid, Drai, RNH, are proven hockey players that help won games.
I have some time still for JP to develop
Yamo seems to be the real deal
I havent see enough of Turris and Kahun yet

I guess that is 7, not 6.

After that you have a LOT of forwards who are just filling space.
Many of the guys are what the are, they arent changing. Chia, JJ, Kassian are the top of that list for me. Some are borderline guys who wouldnt make the team if the Oilers had real depth, the kinds of tweeners who get claimed or pass through waivers until the career just fizzles away. Archi, Shore, Ennis are in that group for me.

So while I phrased it wrong what I meant was that who does Spezza replace at this point of his career that actually makes the team better. I figure he would just be another guy on the ice that at best did nothing to help win the game but at worst was actively contributing to losses.

On topic I would fully be on board for aDell claim if A. He makes it to the Oilers. B. The cap can we worked in a way that has no ramifications once Smith is back. The team cant afford to dig the cap hole any deeper.

If Dell, Gord forbid, goes unclaimed or claimed by a team lower in priority than us, this will be the angle spun as to why we didn’t put in a claim for him.

Do we become the jerks if we demote the guy we just claimed to get another guy a couple days later? Or do the Canes and Jets being jerks give us a pass to be jerks?

Grosenick will end up back with the Kings (likely) if we waive him again. Unless he's claimed yet again. What a silly little carousel this is.

I think you have to just not care about being ‘a jerk’ and do what’s best for the team. Dell is, arguably, better than anyone in our G depth chart outside of Koskinen (and maybe Konolanov but he’s still under contract w/ Lokomotiv).

This team needs a jerk. And I don’t mean the pleasurable stroke.

I say claim Dell, and then waive Smith if he ever comes back. It actually helps with our cap!

Amen. Though, didn’t they give him a NMC? Or just NTC?

Just NTC, if CapFriendly is accurate (although why he got anything is a mystery).

Probably for the same reason that some of you seem to be behind Jason Spezza’s comments icon_wink

Agreed, I have never been a cap expert and am having even more trouble with the hectic pace of this season.

If they dont take him I wont know if it is real or spin as a reason.

Should have some Smith LTIR now shouldn't we?

Yeah but then he'll be back, I heard they expect him to be back playing after the 10 game LTIR..
We lost Forsberg -700 (1-way), but gained Grosenick +700 (2-way), and we'd have to add Dell +800 (1-way).. not sure how much space we have left.. I'd add Spezza as well if we could, at 700k he's better than some of what we have..

Spezza's agent has said he will retire if claimed.
Even so, I think he is done, the Oilers dont have much outside of the top 6 but I dont think Spezza is any kind of solution.

I'd call Spezza's bluff.
Its BS anyway, this whole scenario has been orchestrated with the agent, and the team in colussion, They waive him, he threatens retirement, and the leafs get to keep him..

This is a joke. So now the devils will have 4 goalies, so chances are they put Comrie on waivers. The Jets then could pick comrie back up, the put Forsberg on waivers

The NHl really screwed this up.

Technically, it's the same as it's always been - just teams are feeling like they need more goalies this year due to the taxi squad...

It appears that it would have been better to leave the goalie on the main roster and waive a borderline forward or defenceman instead...

It does create some entertainment with the crazy goalie carousel. It would be entertaining if at the end of all of this most of these guys land back where they began in the first place - with many having to take an extra couple weeks to quarantine possibly because of this.

The system is the same but the situation is not.

Under normal circumstances, if a goalie gets the sniffles, he's not out for maybe 2 weeks. If his cold gets bad enough, maybe he misses a game. If he gets covid even if he has the tiniest symptom, he's out for maybe 2 weeks even if he could play. If a goalie is in the same room with a guy that has a cold, nothing happens. If he's in a room with a covid person, close contact. He's out for a week or more. Plus normally, you don't have mandatory quarantine periods. You make a claim on waivers or a trade, if you can get him up in time, he can be on your bench that night. Here anyone you get from an American team which is 3/4 of the league. he's not available for over a week no matter what.

The NHl screwed this up.

I’m not saying I disagree. Though each team is playing with the same rules. With the taxi rules and emergency recall options from it, GM’s could have got out in front of this by keeping 3 goalies on the active roster.

Teams don't have the same rules. 24 out of the 31 teams do not have the same rules as the 7 Canadian teams. If an American team gets a player from another American team there isn't the quarantine rule that Canadian teams have. That's an advantage. If Canadian teams need a guy immediately, their options are limited to what 6 other teams can give you.

The league should have made it so the 3rd goalie was exempt. If they want to avoid teams dressing the zamboni guy out of desperation because they found it embarrassing, given the border restrictions and all the issues with Covid, they should have made it easier on teams to bring in guys. It's a limited position. If you had too, you can play with less than 6 dmen or less than 12 forwards in a game and be fine. Pretty tough to play without enough goalies.

They're the A-holes who started the whole goalie waiver merry-go round in the first place, Crawford retires, so Carolina picks off Forsberg in case they lose their waiver goalie to NJ, then NJ takes Comrie off WPG, then Canes goalie clears, Forsberg back on waivers, then WPG picks him off to replace Comrie, and now NJ takes Dell.

The waiver rules are bizzarre, the waiver order never changes, even if you have multiple claims, I think you should drop in the order after you make a pick.

Oh well.. Mr. Groesnick it is.. for now..
I think WPG might have to do some roster manouvers once they sign Roslovich, cap math might get complicated, chance that Forsberg gets waived again, he has a 1-way, which might restrict their roster options.

Has it gotten out what happened to Smith?

He went from on the bench night 1, to I think it was announced mid afternoon the next day he was out for his start. So maybe 16-17 hours? I think it got out that night or maybe in the morning so maybe 36 hours after the night 1 game, he's on LTIR for almost a month. It was back to back games so there wasn't a practice and I think only a handful of guys did the morning skate and pretty much no one who played did. So he got a significant enough injury where he misses almost a month without setting foot on the ice. He probably didn't even do much of a workout if at all because he was supposed to play so you wouldn't want to use up energy on game day.

So what happened? I am a couple years older than Smith and have kids 10 and under so similar to him and I tried to think what could happen to me that could take me out like that. So other than doing something stupid like getting drunk and falling off something which I can't see a married, pushing 40, father of young kids, the night before a game doing. We are talking slipping on ice walking to the car, slamming your hand in a car door. Maybe wrestling with kids and they drop a knee in your back.

Just bizarre to me.

The only thing I can think of is when Philly "lent" the Jets Keith Acton and Pete Peeters to avoid losing them in the waiver draft.

What I read last week. Because the Oilers waived Forsberg first, if they picked up when Carolina waived him, he could have just been sent to the taxi squad. All other teams have to keep him on the active.

I don't know if there is an expiry date on how long that lasts for.

I think it acts as if he never finished going through waivers. We still need everyone to pass to get him back.

I know that that's how it used to be, but uncertain how recent CBAs have impacted that. Obviously, it's in the best interest of players to have more opportunity to stay on an active roster, so in normal circumstances, they would generally be happy to be claimed.

For some of these guys on two-way deals, it's probably still pretty great. An extra couple weeks on an NHL roster could almost double your salary.

I blame Crawford and for all this. If he hadn't quit suddenly, then maybe the carousel never fires up at all.

Smith saw how our defense played in game 1 and decided to fall down some stairs later that night? :)

I'd bet he tweaked something in practice or training. This season has started in a hurry. Can't be easy for all the old guys.
