Only 17 hours to go before hockey returns... Not on TV over here, so I may have to listen via Ched or find other methods of watching... Either way I'm feeling good about this season.

Lets see if the players show some of the attitude that they've suggested they've got after the loss to Chicago in the play ins. With such a short season each game is important and a good start tonight is vital as it seems that if we get off to a good start we tend to have a good season of late.

I am hoping this isn't like the playoffs where I could wait to watch a hockey game after the pause and then they laid an egg. Go oil!

Sounds like Koekkoek (sp?) will be starting tonight with Barrie, which I assume means Russell is a healthy scratch? I can't see Russell getting in over Jones.

11pm start here...probably 11:30 by the time they get all the pre-game stuff done. Ugh. Tomorrow is gonna suck.

Can do it all over again tomorrow, with an hour earlier of a start!

Yeah - considered recording it, but kids don't have school tomorrow, and I just moved my 9AM call, so giddy up! Season opener! Wooo!

(For you Curse of Oak Island fans)

A regular season game?! In 2021?! Amidst a global pandemic? Could it be, that the Edmonton Oilers are about to embark on a journey that may bring Connor McDavid closer to the Stanley Cup than ever before?

Coming up.

A CAT 5 MUST WIN BOYS! She’s muuuuuuusty in here this morning. Need to get off to a hot start and take advantage of the ‘Nucks being short JT Miller and Benn. LFG!

Pretty interesting that Koekkoek is starting over Russell. I kind of thought that it would happen at some point but not game 1. The Oilers defense should be able to move the puck out of their zone now!! Nice to see finally.

It's possible that giving Russell an extra year on his contract was a bad decision...

I'm glad to see that Tippett is making the tough decision right off the bat though. That's a good thing. Also glad to see that he learned from his mistake and Koskinen starts in goal.

This year really rests on the backs of Bear and Jones. There is no escape. These kids need to be solid top 4 D all year long.

Really looking forward to seeing our PP with its first legit offensive RHD in a very long time.

When it comes to the defense, I just think they need to be solid.

Last season I do not think Bear was spectacular, he was just solid. He didn't rack up a ton of points, he made plenty of mistakes but overall, he just played solid most games. So I don't see him falling back because he didn't set the bar that high to begin with. Jones needs to be like Bear was last year and just solid. I don't see why he can't and if anything he should be more prepared than Bear. Bear prior to being coming a regular last year had 18 games. Jones is supposed to be a regular this season and has 60 already.

The biggest thing for me is the NHL for several years now has gone to requiring your defense to have at minimum 1 good skating, good puck moving, bring some kind of offense on every pair. The more you have of those guys, the better. Last year they had 3 guys - Russell, Larsson, Benning- who couldn't consistently make a cross ice tape to tape pass. They had 3 bad puck mover, 2 just OK puck movers in Nurse and Klefbom and I good one in Bear. I look at their puck moving today and they have 1 elite puck mover in Barrie, 3 good puck movers in Bear, Jones and Koekkoek and I decent 1 in Nurse. Larsson is the only poor one but he's paired with a good one which is an upgrade over Klefbom puck moving. Skating wise, the same thing. They have an elite skater in Nurse, 2 excellent skaters in Barrie and Jones and 2 good ones in Bear and Koekkoek.

So I think the Oilers have upgraded their defense quite a bit in the areas that they were very very lacking and have been for many years.

LFG buddy! weights

IMO Kookoo is the right choice to pair with Barrie, Barrie can carry the puck, go on offensive excursions, KK has decent wheels and knows how to play D, KK can handle the physicality roll on the pairing, Russell is tough as nails but just not the right match with Barrie IMHO. This is a good sign for me, it shows that Tippet is not afraid to make the correct roster changes even if it rocks the status quo..

I also like Jones/Larsson combo, pretty complimentary skill sets.. interested to see what a healthy Larsson looks like out there.. its been so long..

If Lars returns to his play of his first year with us, I have no doubt we make the playoffs in the north. *knock on wood*...*knock if you’re with me*

Koekkoek stood out big time, to me anyway, in the play in against us a few months ago. He and Barrie are my bet to really surprise the masses with the 5v5 game this year.

It astounds me that Holland rushed to extend Kris Russell and he can’t even make the opening lineup 1 year before his new contract starts.

What a fumble.

I’m not as bothered as most by it. He’ll be at 1.25 next year, it’s not breaking the bank and heck for all we know they send a sweetener to Seattle to take him.

I am not bothered by the contract either. People pick apart his game, we have no idea what he means to the guys in the room. I fully expected one of the usual suspects to attack that intangibles point but it's a real thing. His contract could be virtually completely buried in the minors if you had too next year.

You could totally be right about expansion. If I am the Oilers, I am going 7-3-1. Listening to Klefbom, he's still not sure what he is doing with the shoulder. He wants to see some specialist in Cleveland then make the decision. But when that happens with Covid, who knows. Listening to his comments, I didn't come away thinking it's a lock he will be back ever. There was a whole lot of life talk and a lot of unsure answers not "i'm getting this done and will be back" like you hear most athletes say. So even if he does decide he's getting the surgery, it doesn't sound like surgery is a guarantee to fix it, at least to the level you need for pro sports. If he does get surgery, shoulder surgeries are a LONG recovery. I had the option to get my shoulder worked on and it was 6-9 months recovery. If I am the Oilers, I think you are crazy to protect a guy who you have no clue if he will ever be the same once he recovers from a surgery if he gets it. If I am Seattle, I am not picking a guy who may or may not play ever and if he does, he's probably missing another big chunk of next season after missing all of this year. So if they are getting into the Oilers 8th or lower best forward, or a guy like Neal with a big ticket, maybe a guy like Russell all of a sudden looks pretty good with his 1 yr, low money contract. You know he will give you what he has, be a good guy in the room and can be in your 3rd pairing and paid accordingly plus you aren't committed to him longer term.

Cap space is a big time weapon in the NHL now. So if as a expansion team you are picking guys with bigger contracts and term, you better be sure they earn that contract.

Question: since we had to pay the Flames their Lucic pick because things got prorated, can we call Draisaitl a two time 50 goal scorer?

43 goals over 71 games equals 49.6 over 82. Naturally you round up.

Barrie on the PP because he can hit the net.

My less likely prediction. Koekkoek scores a goal and with an empty building, a loud swear can heard on the broadcast as Russell screams seeing his roster spot disappearing.

Who do we have for first goal of the Oilers season?

I’m going Kahun.

I’d spill my beer with enthusiasm... I think Holtby is starting tonight tho?

Add: Agreed on Demko being overrated. Also, Canucks writer for the athletic seems to think Holtby tonight and Demko tomorrow anyway.

Addx2: Yaremchuk has Holtby as the starter on the nation pre game pod also.

Nuge, drops in from the slot unmolested and gets a tap-in goal off of a McDavid pass from an almost impossible angle behind the goal line.

5 v 5 on the first shift.

McDavid and Nuge point to the sky for Joey.

Going with the Yams scoring #1. Sweet pass from Drai to put it in an open net.

Kelly Hrudy says he was asked to come to Edmonton because he was needed, but got to Airdrie and had to turn around. Might be somebody unexpected on the broadcast tonight.
