As long as it isn't a huge contract (even then, who cares if it's one year), this is a great signing. A 40 point guy who produces 5-5 and brings a complete toolbox.

Huge move for Oilers.
In last two seasons Kahun has scored 2.2 pts per 60, 86th best for NHL forwards.

Taylor Hall at 2.3 per 60, RNH at 2.1.

Other players right around Kahun for even strength scoring the last two years include Landeskog, Radulov, Larkin, Schenn, Seguin, Nylander.

Not sure why three teams have moved on from Kahun, but excellent bet.

Elliotte Friedman @FriedgeHNIC

Kahun deal in EDM will be one-year, $975K

Niiiice. Nice to be a team taking advantage of this messed up cap situation.

He is also an RFA for 2 more seasons after this 1 year deal expires.

Found money.

Adding Kahun makes having Nuge on the top line more bearable. If Kahun doesn’t look good on the Drai line then you try him on McDavid’s wing. No good on either and you cycle him through your lineup until something sticks.

No lose situation. Great pick up.

Wonderful job by KH! If we forget the two seconds he moved for AA. I have been loving his moves thus far. Before the goalie haters jump on me. I am much more happy with Smith on on year then Markstrom on that brutal contact.

The Smith move was bad. Such a great offseason on paper if you were to minus that transaction. It still does not make sense to me.

Great signing!! With Nuge, Kahun, Ennis, they should have 3 legit guys who can play up and down in the top 9.

Barrie- 3.75
Turris - 1.65
Puljujarvi - 1.175
Ennis - 1.00
Kahun - 0.975

8.55 mill

Hall - 8 mill.

I'm glad they didn't sign Hall.

I don't like the Smith signing either but at the same time, who are they getting for 1.5 mill? I am asking that question because I don't know the answer. This was supposed to be a year when goalies came in cheap because there was a lot of them, I don't think we saw that.

Guys who were better than Smith who signed:
Talbot - 3 yrs, 3.66 per
Khudobin 3 yrs, 3.333 per
Holtby - 2 yrs, 4.3 per
Markstrom - 6 yrs, 6 per
Crawford - 2 yrs, 3.9 per
Griess - 2 yrs, 3.6 per

I think this signing could be a good one. I'm only giving him partial credit for keeping the dollar values down though, easier to negotiate in this market.

What we gave up for AA sucks, but a good experienced GM like Holland cuts his losses and moves forward. He was patient and now we have Kahun for a year for under a million plus 2 years of RFA so if he plays well we qualify him with a small raise.

A lesser GM (see Chia, Lowe, Tambellini, MacT) would have only thought about the cost given up for AA and done everything in their power to save face. If any four of those guys were in charge AA would have been qualified and we would not have the depth we have today.

Just my two cents.

I would have been happier with Dell @ 800K or a trade. Arizona is still in Cap hell/prospect hell/entry draft hell with 3 NHL goaltenders. Truthfully, I would rather run with a <1M backup who is young and can trend up over Smith.

I know there's rumours about Hoffman signing with one of the teams that will have some LTIR space once the season starts. I've wodnered if the Oilers don't get Hoffman, if AA is a bit of a backup plan. With the familiarity with AA and Holland. Honestly, I'd take him back at Kahuns salary, if it doesn't work out put him on waivers to the AHL and if he clears, he clears. Possibility of a condensed schedule makes depth super important.

That's totally fair. I do wonder if they had of waited was there really a risk he was signed? I have my doubts and if you wait do you get him for cheaper potentially? Hard to say. I will say that goalies did go faster than I thought they would and for more money. Anyone decent was scooped up pretty fast and for more than what I would want to pay. I wouldn't want the Oilers to have paid the money that any of the guys I listed both in dollars and term. I didn't think the Oilers should be signing anyone longer than 1 year. With the expansion draft coming, I do wonder if you could get a goalie from another team. I like the Columbus guys. I thought one would get traded but they didn't, sounds like prices were sky high. Does the price drop with expansion coming? Same goes for teh Rangers.

I saw Inferno list Dell. I am not convinced he's an NHLer. I listen to Kevin Woodley on Gregor's show and he doesn't give me confidence Dell is a full time NHLer.

110 % agree with this. It seems to me many teams go with a largely unheralded young backup (by design or by necessity) that either usurps and forces a move of the starter or if the starter is unmovable, becomes a valuable asset for trade. I'll repeat your question, when was the last time the Oilers did this? Risk aversion by getting aging names as backups is in itself pretty risky.

I still think everyone is overlooking the Anton Forsberg addition. He's only 27 (4 years younger than Dell) and his numbers aren't terrible. I think he's going to push Mike Smith to be better or get sent down. Remember Smith got a no trade clause not a no movement clause.

Do Turris and Hoffman have some history from their Sens days? :)

Maybe getting Kahun tempers this a bit, but how could you not want to try to have 1 great season playing with McDrai as a winger in a write off year where everyone is taking a 50-60% paycut? Then cash in big time next off-season.

According to Gregor on his show, what Kahum signed for was less than what he was offered by the Oilers when free agency opened.

It continues to remind me of AA. He had an offer from the Oilers that was probably more than fair. Turned it down. If he even gets a contract, it could be hovering around league minimum. Pretty big miscalculation on his part.

Ken Holland @FakeOilersGM
Connor was jealous that I signed one of Leon's buddies so I decided to sign one of Connor's best friends. Please welcome back to the @EdmontonOilers Brandon Manning!

Boggles the mind that Manning ended up on the Oilers...

Those cycles weren't gonna stop themselves!

Was Chia's final trade for the Oilers...I guess that was appropriate. Underrated was how this trade put pressure on McDavid to call up Manning where he reassured Manning that he felt Manning was going to be able to help the team.
