So Barrie essentially replaces Benning and can run the PP if Klef is out also providing more options being a right shot while serving as mentor/placeholder for Bouchard...I'll take it! Hopefully wesee the Barrie from COL and not the TO Barrie

They had $5.2 left before Barrie.. have to assume using either K-bom LTIR cap space, or they need to move someone, to make room for Bear's contract, and a goalie..

Landing both Puljujarvi, Turris and Barrie for roughly $6.825M is some solid bargaining.

Smart move by Barrie, he'll get to QB the PP and probably thinks this will boost his value for the next contract. Still, very happy he came here.
I mean we need to sign a goalie because it looks like this team is going to try and win every game 7-6...

Done deal. One year. Only $3.75 mil.
Does Holland have blackmail photos?? Apparently turned down bigger offers.

He went through the stuck on 2nd PP unit thing with the Leafs. Probably doesn't want to repeat that with teams like the canucks and Avs.
No Chance he's here past 1 year, but he will be excited to rack up points here for a season.

Yeah, and if things go south for the year, I bet we could get a great return for him at the deadline.
Shouldn't talk like that, I know, but hey...Mike Smith is probably coming back :P

we have only 1.5M left on cap space plus we need to resign Bear and add a G well its gonna be tight unless we somehow get rid of Russell to a team that need more cap space but not real money because is real money this year is 1.5M already had his bonus. Maybe Ottawa for a 3rd pick.

They must know that Klefbom is out for 3/4 of the season or more. Only way there’s room to sign Bear.

I imagine there’s a forward ship out deal incoming. Chiasson, my speculation. Then they give Bear 1.5 for 1 year; which takes him to arb rights next offseason when the Oilers cap opens fairly significantly.
Add: if Klef is miraculously good to go, I actually don’t mind our D.

Good deal for the Oilers. Surprised he came in that low. Apparently he took less to sign with the Oilers.

I was out of reception all morning, and this was the first news I heard. It made me very happy - especially given the cap hit. It looked like the team was having a great couple of days...

And then, Mike Smith?
If I'm being honest, I'm good with everything but goaltending so far in free agency. As far as the other signings Holland got some good value for the dollar. I'm hoping for a miracle in terms of keeping pucks out of the Oilers' net next season.

Yep. I'm the same. Heard the Barrie news and thought the team is doing great. And 5 minutes later the announcement about Smith happened and I just saw red. Can't understand how you can watch the team all year and think that it's a good idea to take the same tandem in to next year.

94?
He was the same for the Leafs, no? Used to be #4 for the Avs.
This could have been avoided if we retired Smyth's 94 like we should have the second he retired.

#4 likely headed to the rafters when hockey is played in front of crowds again...so it was a showdown between two Oilers icons either way...
Oh, and Kris Russell's still wearing that one too...

This is the best argument for keeping Russell that I've heard.

Smyth lovers can relax. Barrie didn't take 94, he will be 22. Probably smart move so he won't have to heart all the fans yelling "Smitty" at him.

It would be less jarring seeing another fan in 94 than it was seeing players wearing 39 or 83. Hall wore 4 and there was less outrage. The whole protection of 94 seems a little silly given all that.

What’s not to like about Smyth? He epitomized the blue collar man. Spent countless hours after games signing autographs and talking to fans on the Northlands exit ramp in -40 weather. He didn’t just sit in his car either. He came out and walked and talked amongst the fans. He earned the cult love. I’ve spent more than one frigid night getting an autograph for my kid or nephew and he always, always, always came out no matter how bad we lost.
I don’t think his number should be retired because his on ice accomplishments were mostly world championships and team Canada related. He did leave his mark in Edmonton and it’s not hard to have a soft spot for him in your heart. He was our Trevor Linden, who walks on water in Vancouver. He was our Doug Gilmore in Toronto. You don’t see athletes do this enough.
Loved Weight and Hemsky, but they didn’t have the same connection to the Oilers. At least in my experience.
