Someone with time should compile the Oilers record in afternoon games. I wager it'd be pretty abysmal.

That was a immensely gargantuan failure of an effort. The team looked lost, like they completely forgot how to cover players, couldn't pass, weren't skating, lost almost every puck battle, had terrible goaltending, took too many penalties, the PK was grotesque, 5v5 was abysmally bad, shot clock and score board flattered the Oilers as Chicago took the foot off the gas pedal in the third... UGHHHHHH...
Literally everything that could have been bad... was not just bad, it was exceptionally terrible.
Sorry, I'll edit this to acknowledge that one thing was not terrible. The PP was the only redeeming aspect of the game for the Oil.

This wasn't the same Kassian as I remember in the last playoffs. What's wrong with these mutton chops? Defective or something.

Tippett doing his best McLellan tonight. No timeout while the team bleeds and panics.
Smith did his best Ty Conklin as well to start off the freak out.
Did AA even play tonight?

Kostko was good too. Made a case to start game 2. Just not sure if you want to miss out on the Smith Battling powers that we would get playing him again.

Smith is hot when he's on, but if he isn't then avoid. Koskinen better be getting the starts from here on. Most of the goals were sloppy and lazy defensive play, but Smith wasn't able to bail them out.
Hopefully that was just the wake up call.

Smith was handling the puck like a grenade the first 8 mins and it showed. Hope he rides the bench the rest of this qualifier. Waited 4 months for this poop show!
That not the effort Caver would of expected. Man up boys and get the job done. 3 straight wins!

It didn’t have a playoff feel from the Oil. Felt like they were hesitant and panicky. But it was never gonna be a sweep.

Exactly what I thought, the first few shifts it just seemed like they thought it was going to be easy. They got lucky with that too many men call but even with the early McDavid goal it was just a terrible effort.

Anthenasiou with a team low 8:37 of ice time tonight. Obviously hasn’t earned Tip’s trust. Great acquisition thus far...two 2nd’s, $3M salary and has to be protected from expansion next year

The advantage with Koskinen over Smith is when the D are stumbling around like they scored a truck load of CBD, his shear mass and cross section can stop a few goals.
D men were dopey out there, stumbling and bumbling, tentative and no urgency to their game, low intensity, which the refs helped to induce with the fear of drawing a weak penalty, which IMHO there were quite a few of, and the no calls, like the one from Cagguilla on Ennis, total targeted head shot, ignored by refs, should be a 3 game suspension..
Noticed Neal instead of Chaisson on the PP, which I liked, Neal has way better hands, and can actually contribute to the puck movement, and has a wicked snipe.
Besides a few Oilers, the rest of the team was looking for someone else to get the job done, they need to hook themselves up and start pulling the wagon. Dopey effort.

Drake Caggiula catches Tyler Ennis with a shoulder in the chin and the only penalty handed out is to Ennis for delay of game. Okay then.

Hearing for Caggiula for this hit. Refs missed it at the time.

Should have been 5 AND the Game, % minute PP would have had a HUGE effect on the game, a subsequent hearing is inconsequential in a 5 game playoff.
How do FOUR officials miss that head shot?
Answer: They don't miss it, they collectively DECIDE NOT to call it.

That wasn't then show that you and I have been waiting to see since the shut down of the season. That isn't the type of performance that we'd come to expect of this team prior to the start of said shut down. You don't get to 5th in the league and close to being higher up the table than we ended up by playing like that.
Not much positivity can be taken from that game last night, we perhaps look at the third period which we won 2-0, the power play clicking again and that we can't possibly play that badly again tomorrow can we, that has to be our shocker performance of the play-offs.
That said I mentioned after the Calgary game that we absorbed the push back after out goals well, tonight we didn't, that's the sad aspect of it all. Everyone has to stand up and admit they weren't at the races and have to do better tomorrow.

Safe to say the Oilers were the only team that wasn't ready to play hockey to start their game for the first real NHL hockey in 4 months.
It's pretty darn embarrassing. Yet...not that surprising.

Jets lost 2 of their best players to cheap plays. They played good in the first. Pens just ran into a hot goalie, they dominated most of the game.
Oilers, well, the oilers took a dump in the middle of the rink to start their game.

Everyone forgot about how he almost put the Oilers up 2-0 on the shift after McDavid scored. He's gonna play less if he's in the bottom six as those are mostly players Tippet likes for special teams. And since AA doesn't play on the special teams, he's going to see less ice, especially when the team is chasing the score.

He shouldn't have started, he should have been out after two goals in 4 shots, he should have been out after the third goal, or the fourth goal, or the first period...There was no sense in keeping Smith there. 5 goals on only 23 shots.
In the end, it was really costly. The Oilers scored enough to win if they'd had even only okay goaltending (even though they played pretty poorly) but goaltending was an absolute killer for the Oil. They never got a save that they really needed until Smith left the crease.
The worst thing is that it was predictable. Smith's past his prime and was one of the worst starting goalies in the league this year. The faith in him for what he did in the playoffs seven years ago makes zero sense.
Sounds like Koskinen has the next opportunity so hopefully he can grab it and run with it. That really should be the last time Mike Smith starts a game for the Oilers.

Tippett said goaltending wasn't the issue yesterday. Said Smith made a couple big saves before the giveaway goal. Felt both goalies were fine. No decision yet about Game 2 starter.
On Tyler Ennis's status and if he expects any lineup changes: "No. We had everybody on the ice."
Summary. Smith could start game 2, and no lineup changes? Best line since the start of 2020 deemed not useful.

I’m holding out hope that his no to lineup changes just means it’ll be the same 18 skaters dressed.
Why they split RNH from Leon and Yam is beyond me. Best line in 2020 and they break it up? Sigh. At this point though, what’s Sheahan provide that Haas can’t?

I believe the thinking there was that McD had been extremely limited by not having a decent player to co-handle the puck with, it was always McD on his own, easy to shutdown, figured Nuge would lift that line, and that LD-Yamo could work together with Ennis and still perform at a high level.
Problem so far is that in game 1 McD's line didn't do much better than it did without Nuge, and LD-Yamo line looked worse. I understand the logic.
Its one game.
I'm a Kassian fan, but he looked brutal last game, I think he's walking on eggshells worrying about getting penalties, and he has a right to be the refs are targeting him now for reputation... unlike 19 on Calgary. he has to bring his game to higher level, crash bang, make their D men hear foot steps and cough up the puck..

You don't chance it, start Koskinen. Most of the goals weren't Smith's fault, but he wasn't bailing them out either. Koskinen looked calm, poised, like he could settling things down when he went in.
