Oilers sign M. Niemelainen to entry-level contract.
Big boy, who supposedly has great skating ability... for what its worth..

EDMONTON, AB - The Edmonton Oilers have signed defenceman Markus Niemelainen to a two-year entry-level contract.

Niemelainen, 21, has just completed his third season in the Finnish SM-Liiga, and first with Assat, posting seven points (1G, 6A), 42 penalty minutes and a -6 plus-minus rating in 55 games. He helped HPK capture the SM-Liiga championship in 2019, his second full season in Finland's top professional league.

The 6'6", 190-pound blueliner has appeared in 147 career SM-Liiga games, registering 15 points (3G, 12A), 74 penalty minutes and a -13 plus-minus rating. Niemaleinen also played with the OHL's Saginaw Spirit from 2015-2017.

A native of Kuopio, FIN, Niemelainen represented Finland at the 2015 and 2016 World U18 Hockey Championships, winning a gold medal (2015) and a silver medal (2016).

Niemelainen was Edmonton's third-round draft pick, 63rd overall, at the 2016 NHL Draft.

And the Oilers assign him back to Assat for the coming season,

https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/2020/08/oilers-loan-markus-n iemelainen-to-finland.html

Markus Niemelainen’s return to North America will wait a little while longer. The Oilers announced that they have loaned the defenseman to Assat Pori of the Finnish SM-liiga to start next season.

"The 22-year-old just recently signed his entry-level deal back at the end of April after spending the past three seasons in Finland, the most recent of which came with Assat where he had a goal and six assists along with 42 PIMS in 55 games. Edmonton drafted him in the third round in 2016 (63rd overall) out of Saginaw of the OHL but he only spent one more year there before heading back home. That did allow Edmonton to hold his draft rights longer at least as instead of having them for two years, they had them for four and used all of them to determine if he was worth signing."

Makes sense.
