Brutal. Hope the kids comes out of this okay. I can’t find the cause for the coma.

The Oilers said this on Facebook:
#Oilers & Bakersfield Condors forward Colby Cave has been placed in a medically-induced coma & admitted to the critical care unit at Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto after suffering a brain bleed overnight. Please keep Colby & his wife Emily in your thoughts & prayers at this time.

Perhaps lucky that Colby wasn't able to be skating and playing hockey when this happened? I looked for a head injury history but couldn't find anything, then did some research and found that there's really no known cause.

On the bright side, from what I’ve read, most people resume their normal lives within 2 years. The success rate of the surgery seems to be very high. Taking the the time to recover may not be the best thing Cave will want to hear as a borderline NHL’er, but it sure beats the alternative.

That's encouraging. It's well documented that I'm not his biggest fan as a player, but every indication is that this is a really good dude. Regardless of all of that, you just want to see him return healthy and fully to his family. Everything after that is secondary.

He was supposed to be an RFA on July 1.
I hope that the Oilers support his recovery past that date, as this seems likely to be the end of his hockey career.

Thinking it will be more on the NHLPA. That being said, the Oilers should be there for him.

Insurance is covered, in great deal, by the collective agreement. Despite that document being insanely long for a union agreement what happens to a player with a small number of games played who suffers a non-hockey injury when their contract is over is unclear.

Contract isn't over yet though...
Although I suppose if they pay him out the sum total of this contract, that doesn't help him much.

The question is what happens after July 1. I'm assuming this isn't something you walk away from in a couple months. He'll be covered under healthcare like the rest of us, but if he needs more, its on the union, not the Oilers (unless they feel he's worth resigning).
He's a offensive black hole and not exactly Guy Carbonneau. I'm sure they'd prefer to move on.

It's tough times like these where a world class organization can show that they are world class. I'm a believer that to attract world class talent, your organization has to commit to being exactly that. And given the unusual circumstances of the hockey world being on pause, this is a higher profile story.
It would be good of the Oilers to extend any support systems they have to a player who is likely going to need more than what a non-hockey player gets.

Found this link to the previous NHL/NHLPA CBA. It doesn't appear to have been changed when the current CBA went into effect.
https://www.wingingitinmotown.com/2013/9/27/4768430/getting- to-know-the-cba-episode-16-article-23-insurance-coverages
"Here's the list of disabilities and the payments for getting those. Have fun reading this one!
Disability Type Benefit Amount (US Dollars)
Loss of Brain Functions $5,000,000
Paralysis $5,000,000
Organ Failure $3,000,000
Terminal Illness $3,000,000
Loss of a Limb $2,500,000
Loss of Two Limbs $4,000,000
Loss of Sight (both eyes) $4,000,000
Loss of Sight (one eye) $2,000,000
Loss of Hearing or Speech $750,000
Loss of Hearing and Speech $1,000,000
Loss of One Hand or Foot $750,000
Loss of Any Two Hands or Feet $1,000,000
For clarity, the word "Loss" means the player can't use it, not that it's necessarily amputated."
Colby Cave has the same player agent as Ethan Bear.
https://puckpedia.com/agent/jason-davidson
Colby Cave has played 67 NHL games,so he is eligible for this benefit. I'm not sure if the player has to have the disability proven to be hockey related.
Hope Colby can recover enough soon so that he can get out of the hospital and return to somewhere that his family can visit him in person.

You mean like Bobby Clarke when Roger Neilson lost his coaching position after his recovery?
Claiming Neilson went “goofy” and “we didn’t tell him to go get cancer”.
Thankfully the Senators hired Roger, one of the best hockey minds in the history of the game, as an assistant.

Oh my. This really shocked me. My wife just got up this morning and said, “did you hear about Colby Cave?” I annoying stated, “Yes, I told you this a few days ago!”
Then she told me he passed.
I’m so shocked as it sounded like it would be a long, but likely successful recovery.
I feel so bad for his family’s and friends. Such horrible luck. RIP Colby. 😢

His family and friends can't even gather for a decent funeral or memorial or even for a consoling hug. Just basically starting out in life.
RIP young man. Condolences to his family and friends.

Deeply saddened by this.
The world has lost a great person. The hockey world has lost a true professional, a family, a great brother and son and a young wife has lost her husband. All. Too. Soon.
Rest in Paradise Colby.

Just awful. We need as much goodness in this world as we can get, and by all accounts, he had lots of it in him.
Feel so gutted for his young wife and his friends and family. Tragic and heartbreaking.

Sad times. Colby Cave was a great guy. Good at hockey too. He could hang with the elite NHLers. He was among the best at his craft. As a family man this is truly a big loss.

RIP Colby Once an Oiler, forever an Oiler! Just out of curiously does anyone remember the last time an active NHL player passed away? I can only think of Luc Bourdon and our own Kristian Pelss who were both prospects at the time.

The offseason of 2011 was awful: Derek Boogaard, Wade Belak, and Rick Rypien.
Add in the Lokomotiv crash was in September, with former NHLers Pavol Demetra, Ruslan Salei, Karlis Skrastins, Karel Rachunek. It was a lot.
