Looking at the standings, it looks like the top 3 Central teams are safe barring a total collapse. Almost everyone in the Pacific still has some risk, with the race now looking like this:

Pacific
VGK - 65GP 35-22-8 78 points 32 ROW L10 - 8-1-1
VAN - 63GP 34-23-6 74 points 31ROW L10 - 4-5-1
EDM - 64GP 33-23-8 74 points 31 ROW L10 - 5-3-2

Wild Card
CGY - 65 GP 33-25-7 73 points 27 ROW L10 - 6-3-1
NSH - 63GP 32-23-8 72 points 29 ROW L10 - 6-3-1
WPG - 66 GP 33-27-6 72 points 30 ROW L10 - 5-4-1
ARI - 66 GP 31-27-8 70 points 26 ROW L10 - 4-5-1
MIN - 63 GP 31-25-7 69 points 29 ROW L10 - 6-3-1

Pretty wild that with 6 weeks left to play, there's still 8 teams in the hunt for five spots (although Vegas looks in good stead to make it and it's a big uphill climb for the bottom three on the list. Chicago and the California teams are all dead in the water now.

Looking a little closer at each team's route:

Vegas Golden Knights

- Two games against top Central teams - COL, DAL
- Four games against teams well below playoff cut line - BUF< LAK, NJD, DET
- Critical games against WPG (2), CGY (2), EDM (2), ARI (2), VAN (2) & MIN
- key injuries - Tuch

Vancouver Canucks
- Eight games against Central or Eastern contenders - TOR, CBJ(2), COL(2), NYI, TBL, DAL
- Four teams against minnows - ANA(2), LAK, SJS
- Critical games - ARI (3), VGK (2), WPG, CGY
- key injuries - Markstrom, Boeser, Leivo, Ferland

Edmonton Oilers
- Seven games against Central or Eastern contenders (DAL, CBJ, NYI, PHI, WSH, TBL, COL)
- Five games against minnows (CHI, OTT, SJS, ANA (2))
- Critical games - WPG (2), NSH (2), VGK (2), CGY
- key injuries - Klefbom, Yamamoto, Neal, Russell, Nygard

Calgary Flames
- Other Playoff Teams (5) - TBL (2), CBJ, NYI (2)
- Minnows (5) - FLA, NYR, NJD, SJS, ANA
- Critical (6) - ARI, VGK(2), VAN, WPG, EDM
- key injuries - Hamonic

Nashville Predators
- Other Playoff Teams (8) - DAL (2), TOR, CBJ, COL(2), PHI (2)
- Minnows (4) - MTL(2). CHI, LAK
- Critical (7) - EDM(2), MIN (3), WPG, ARI
- key injuries -

Winnipeg Jets
- Other Playoff Teams (3) - DAL, COL(2)

- Minnows (5) - BUF, NYR, DET, LAK, SJS
- Critical (9) - VAN(3), CGY, WPG(2), VGK(2), NSH
- key injuries - Demers, Chychrun

Minnesota Wild
- Other Playoff Teams (7) - CBJ, WSH(2), PHI, COL, STL, NYI
- Minnows (7) - SJS. LAK, ANA, CHI(2), NJD, BUF
- Critical (5) - NSH(3), VGK, WPG

Looks much better when Yamamoto is inserted, the bottom 6 look like the Oilers have some depth.

Also, it won't change what Adam initially posted by much but Regulation Wins (RW) takes precedent over Regulation or Overtime Wins (ROW). I'm glad this rule started this season, treating a 3 on 3 OT win as equal as a team finishing someone off in regulation didn't make sense.

The Oilers are tied for 7th in the league in RW which is pretty damn good.

I was concerned about Kassian's contract b/c I didn't think he would last on McDavid's wing for the duration of the deal. But I didn't think it would happen *checks notes* less than a month after he signed it.

The first half of March is a rough schedule for the Oilers.

Games against NSH, DAL, CLB, and VGK (all playoff teams), with only CHI thrown in there as a breather. Then what could be a critical game againts the Jets.

And then they play 3 games in 4 nights against the Islanders, Flyers and Caps, with the last 2 games back-to-back on the road. They have 2 three games in four nights blocks in the beginning of March, but at the least the other one ends with a game against CHI.

If they can weather that storm, then they should be okay, with games agains OTT, ANA(x2) and SJ in the 2nd half of the month. But I don't think anything is a given right now.

Are you more concerned with the elite teams, or the garbo teams? The Garbo teams have me more worried.

Isn't this kind of surreal. The Oilers have played well all season but so has everyone else, despite what happens game to game the Oilers could see the playoffs on the outside looking in should they falter.

It legit could either way and it's stunning how tight this is.

Should be a fun few weeks of the season, or the worst. Oilers gonna Oiler or will they succeed?

My money is on succeed!

Schedule makers must be mad geniuses. We just happen to play 2 teams 2 points behind us next.

Lose those games and just like that, we're in huge trouble. Hope they can find a way.

I know I say it every game day, but they truly are getting into must win territory.

They only need 9 wins, so this can't be a must win, that said, it would really help chip away.

If they do lose, it would be very demotivating.

I hope/think this is how the next few games play out:

Edmonton Oilers
- Seven games against Central or Eastern contenders (DAL(L), CBJ(W), NYI(W), PHI(W), WSH(L), TBL(L), COL(W))
- Five games against minnows (CHI(L), OTT(W), SJS(L), ANA (2)(W,L))
- Critical games - WPG (2)(W,W), NSH (2)(L,W), VGK (2)(L,L), CGY(W)

I think they can end the season with 94 points, which is basically a playoff guarantee.

I fear Anaheim, San Jose, Chicago.

Now that I think on it, tonight's game could very well be the most crucial of the year.

These games are huge. If we can add two points to our tally, and prevent the Jets from getting a couple more, it can be huge.

Just win.

Bad night last night - Knights and Wild both won, adding pressure on the wild cards spots, and pushing Vegas a little closer to punching their ticket. That's a big lead now for the conference title.

Calgary trailing 4-2 against Tampa this afternoon with 20 minutes to go. We could also really use a Maple Leaf win over the Canucks and a Sabres victory against the Coyotes.

If we win against Winnipeg, we add a little more breathing room too.

Huge win and a really good OOT scoreboard tonight.

Only Coyotes winning as the only blemish. That's an incredibly tight race though. Five teams within two points for the two wild card spots. We really need to keep winning to stay out of that fray.

Another pretty decent night. The Flames win is unfortunate - and maybe fatal for the Panthers playoff hopes - but the Canucks choking warms my heart, and it's nice to see the Wild stumble too. Canucks lose their game in hand and all the losses this weekend for our foes were in regulation so not even any loser points!

Tomorrow, the only important game is for the Oilers themselves...Win and we can open up a six-point gap on Nashville.

Edit - I missed the Vegas game last night. A surprising loss to a minnow! Things tighten up again. We win our games in hand and we are tied with them...

Not a bad few days here...

Tomorrow its Minny vs. Nashville (so someone is getting points - cheer against OT), Winnipeg against Buffalo (who can't seem to beat anyone lately) and Vegas against the Mickey Mouse Club...err...New Jersey Devils. So two minnows and a three-point game possibility...

And of course Oilers vs. Stars. Win that and at worst we keep pace with Vegas and move to 5 points up on the Flames and 6 up on the Canucks. Dare to dream...

Obviously cheering for the Jackets tonight against the Flames, but who we cheering for in the Canucks-Coyotes game?

Yotes.

Why? Other than hating the Canucks? Wouldn't it be good to have a team fall off completely?

My hatred of the Flames wants a 3 point game there to increase Calgary’s odds of missing everything. Hate isn’t always logical though.

You can't always get what you want, but if you try sometimes, you just might find, you can get a lottery pick.

Arizona is no real threat to the Oilers. Oilers are 4 full games up. Better we get space between us and the 'Nucks.

I view it as the Canucks have 2 games in hand while the Yotes have the same games played as us, but we’re up 8 points on them. A Canucks loss aids our divisional race.

Up 6 on the WC teams with a game in hand is more comforting than being 4 up without said game in hand.

I think Coyotes. I'm just more concerned with the teams close to us, and finishing as high as possible in the standings. They Coyotes are currently 8 points back and going in to tonight we already have a game in hand, so if they win, it gives us a better shot at home ice advantage in the playoffs.

Also, I hate the Canucks.

According to this

A Vancouver win increases our chances to make the playoffs by 0.1%. Phoenix winning lowers it by 0.1%.

And no - not counting us IN the playoffs until it is clinched, 98% be damned.

I'm with you there...

But I'm not JUST concerned with making the playoffs, but where we finish in the standings! I would guess that a Vancouver loss would help the percentages of finishing first or second!

Bleeping Jackets. Chokers.

What's with these Eastern teams? It's like they don't want to make the playoffs.

Late in the game too... got to enjoy about 50 minutes worth before the choking. Was almost finished..but it just ended in disappointment.

That wild card race is wild alright. It's nice to be a bit above the fray - here's hoping the Oilers can keep it up.

FWIW, my picks to prevail in the Wild Card are Minnesota and Nashville...
