This league...

On the upswing, he will be back for the Jan 29th game. Yay. I bet it will be uneventful.

Two-game suspension for Zack Kassian.

The very definition of insanity is doing the exact same thing expecting different results.

Generally Disappointed.

Probably.

But Kassian without the dumb stuff is a guy that doesn’t stay in the league.

It’s a win. I thought they’d give him 5 games. Hopefully this buys us some calls for the rest of the year. The player from other teams, former officials all seem to side with Zach.

Rightfully so.

Can't wait for the 29th and 1st as far as I'm concerned let's be sensible, but lets go head hunting when possible in a clean and fair way against them. They'll soon start crying to the officials, but if we do it right it will send a message.

That was the only thing about Saturday that I felt our game lacked was willingness to put any big hits on them.

"...grabs Tkachuk who is focused on following the puck up the ice for an offensive chance."

Bull.

If Tkachuk had any interest up the ice for an offensive chance he wouldn't have blindly flown into the end boards backwards. And how exactly does the department of player safety KNOW what Tkachuk is focused on. Absolutely bull. I'm fine with what Kassian did, I'm fine with him being suspended, but I don't like being lied to.

The recording is a joke. Saying that Tkachuk was focused on an offensive chance. He was behind his own net.

I would love to know what they expect a player in Kassian's position to do in this situation. In the recording they said that he broke rules and you can't do that no matter what. In this situation, Tkachuk ran Kassian 3 times. In each situation Tkachuk waited until Kassian was engaged with someone, he waited until he wasn't looking, then made sure to take multiple strides (a.k.a a charge) then propelled himself into Kassian. He was flat out trying to severely hurt Kassian. He wasn't trying to be physical to separate the puck from the man, he wanted to hurt him. So according to the NHL, under no circumstances can another player retaliate to try to protect himself. According to the NHL and that recording the way I heard it, in order for Kassian no to get in trouble, has to just take it. He has to get drilled with a charge and if Tkachuk hits him in the head or sends him flying, knocks him silly, breaks a bone, or anything and maybe ends his career, OH well.

I like physical hockey. I like seeing a big hit in the corner. If a player is going back and as long as he has the ability to brace for the hit, I have no problem with it. If a player decided not to brace for the hit, well then that's his problem. What I don't like is seeing someone target someone like that. I don't like seeing a player go after a guy when he knows he can't defend himself. Kassian was engaged with another Flame, he can't defend/brace for the hit. The reason the league thought that hit was "legal" was he misses Kassian's head by a few inches. Doesn't change the fact they were dirty.

The answer is clear, hit other players on his team. Now the question becomes, does lucic actually intimidate us or are we willing to go after Johnny G. and take the consequences of that.

I'm actually expecting a pretty lame response, similar to the one Giordano got for injuring McDavid. These payback games are always a letdown because nobody wants to get suspended. Kassian lost $48,000 for his revenge.

I agree, that is what has to happen but does that not continue the problem the NHL supposedly had with what Kassian did? They are condoning players taking retribution and matters into their own hands. All that had to happen is a charging penalty get called the first or second time and nothing happens.

If they want to suspend Kassian for grabbing a "unwilling" players and raining down punched, then how about giving Tkachuk a fine for targeting a defenseless player. Mention that it was a obvious charged that got missed and the league out of safety for it's players, does not condone players taking healthy runs at guys.

I find this league absolutely baffling at times with the mixed messages and blatant double standards they have.

Does this mean that the Parrot and Bettman are each 24000 richer today or where does that money end up ? Kinda disappointing that Parros being an ex " code " guy in the NHL would totally turtle himself when it comes to those Tachuck so called clean hits.

I don’t know for certain, so don’t quote me, but I’m fairly positive it goes to the players association?

Add: suspension is optics. Precedent was set and they gave the guy 2 games. They essentially had to.

Agreed on all fronts. What Kassian did was a suspendable offence. Probably well worth the two games - if you're going to get suspended, you may as well take your pound of flesh first - but still, repeatedly ragdolling and punching a player who's trying to get away is always going to be a suspension. Not really dissimilar to the one Lucic got earlier this year for punching the guy in the face - and he only got one punch in.

The issues here are A) that the league has decided that Tkachuk, who's charging in for blindside hits on a player who's engaged in a puck battle with someone else is not getting even a fine. The NHL even says in the video that it's a clean hit. And B) the video from Parros is a joke that does not get the facts even close to right. Tkachuk at no point was focused on the puck. His hit was predatory, and then he was concerned only with running away from the ensuing scrum.

What did happen to all the Flames anyhow? There was no one trying to do anything besides the most half-hearted intervention there...what happened to the older captain?

Okay this is amazing. LA Kings mascot, Bailey puts out a tasty little take on the Kassian suspension via twitter;

It is also illegal in Hawaii

And the idiotic Leaf writers of course have to pipe in their opinion:

https://thehockeynews.com/news/article/zack-kassian-has-dole d-out-1067-hits-during-his-career-but-cant-seem-to-handle-ta king-one?fbclid=IwAR353uZK2GYW4toaRLcic29GBpUfIhGRG4Et7FR9Tz ZOSCHUmd4AKwzRVas

If anyone should have to answer for his actions, it was McDavid, who threw a dirty and potentially dangerous hit on Tkachuk from behind into the boards in response to the hit on Kassian. If you want to be outraged, the McDavid hit was the one that has no place in the game.

Wow, I used to go to the hockey news for everything hockey years ago......really has gone downhill.

Seems to be an opinion created to be clickbait. Makes no sense at all.

I would be so embarrassed personally if I made my living writing hockey articles and suggested that the McDavid "hit" was worse than Turtlechuck's premeditated, targeted, out of position butt first charges. It would be like a soccer article talking about how the striker should have just picked the ball up with his hands to break through the defense. Clueless is not even close to describing that article. He just couldn't help himself and had to go full Toronto and throw a jab in there about how it's not fair that we got the best player on earth...again. Hilarious. Has to be clickbait. They have editors still right?

I also get a big laugh out of people saying Connor must have to fight Rinaldo now if Turtlechuck can't decline Kassian. If Connor was targeting Rinaldo with out of position around the net cheapshots multiple time a game then he too would have to answer for it. Just because Turtlechuck leads the Lames in points does not make him honourable. A leading scorer can't just do whatever he wants. What a joke. And this from the fan base that got to watch Jarome Iginla all those years...such a 180!

If things get out of hand on the 29th and that big stiff Lucic decides to get involved, I really hope Nurse is on the ice.

I still think Darnell would pound that caveman from post to pillar. And while mayhem is breaking out, hopefully a Flame is laying on the ice after a what Parros deems a “clean” hit.

Parros really needs to go. He’s absolutely useless and over his head.

Parros is a figure head, in my opinion. There’s a committee that decides this crap. Though yes he is the head of said group. But he, and they, get direction from the league. They won’t can him/teasing him elsewhere

There were lessons learned by Kassian from this:

https://www.cbssports.com/nhl/news/oilers-zack-kassian-on-fi ghting-matthew-tkachuk-id-do-it-all-over-again-after-suspens ion-was-handed-down/

Quote:

When asked about the incident, the 28-year-old said that while he respects the league's decision, he wouldn't change anything about what happened.

"I'd do it all over again," Kassian said. "After speaking with [head of the Department of Player Safety George] Parros on the phone, he explained how the hit was not dirty. So that gave me some clarity on what you can do and can't do now, so I put that in the memory bank."

However, even with the explanation from the league office, Kassian was still none too pleased about the Tkachuk's hit.

"People don't do that to me or my teammates when I'm out there," he said. "To me, those are dangerous hits. If they're clean, they're still predatorial (sic), which is completely fine. I'm a big boy, I love big boy hockey. But if you're going to play big boy hockey, you've got to answer the bell every once in awhile."

Sadly, if Kassian throws the exact same hit, I would bet he gets suspended for it, just because.

I hope he got Perros' message in writing or on tape. Just in case.

I'd love to be a union rep for Kassian when he gets suspended for making a similar hit in 6 weeks.

Exactly, Parros is getting so comical that he's turned the whole procedure into a big joke, if he does get a hearing for a similar hit, the first thing he needs to do is contest it and file a grievance with the NHLPA, these rules need to be uniformly applied to all membership.

Here's Eric Francis - Calgary Flames informal PR guy - giving his two cents on Kassian vs. Tkachuk.

Apparently Francis never watched Lucic versus Los Angeles. If he's got friends on the other team, he's generally invisible. Hard to imagine anything different out of him with the Oilers. I'd be shocked to see him try to fight Kassian.

I dunno. Mature captain like Giordano can get a lot out of a player.

You can't always get what you want, but if you try sometimes, you just might find, you can get a lottery pick.

It doesn’t matter about Lucic. Kassian doesn’t need to fight a 4th liner.
