I assumed the 2 on 1 goal of Draisaitl and Khaira along with the total screen Chiasson did on the Klefbom goal made it pretty obvious which crease I was referring to.

I was wrong.

Bleh, I was being sarcastic in my anger, as I felt it was a team effort in that disgrace on Wednesday. The Oil couldn’t score good enough or stop the puck good enough against a team they should be beating if they want to convince people that they are for real. Sorry about the snark, it wasn’t meant for you.

When Connor and Drai drop a deuce, they do it in unimaginable fashions. They looked like they were bombed.
That said, the whole team all took the night off, and this is becoming a troubling trend.

97 and 29 aren't going to play 100+% every night. And Nuge is injured. Just not enough depth to take over the reins if the top line isn't in sync.

Koskinen will have the odd stinker too and this was one of them. At least it was against an Eastern Conference team. Also proves how much Kassian and Nuge mean to the team.

Yeah, this one is gonna leave a mark.

Proof that even this team's depth can't cover for missing a NUGE and a Kass. There is still work to be done. Those two can't come back fast enough. faint

Wow that was Trudeau embarrassing. Bad everywhere. Lack of depth is showing with injuries and if one of the big two get hurt it's season over. Some nights lately I wonder if this is a playoff team.

The Oilers are a play off team... ... if 100% healthy. In Holland we trust. Ken's on it!

Ask one of the big two to carry the defensive duties Nuge does and you can't even beat tired Ottawa. This shows 93's value to the team.

Maybe we're last years Buffalo, strong start and burn out. It's hard to keep that level Connor Leon and Oscar have been on going over 82 games. Injuries and fatigue.

Maybe we destroy LA next game and go on a win streak. Either way this is/was a fun run and we're trending upwards so watch out next year!

Klefbom and Larsson each -4. Hope we don’t see those two as a pairing again. Two defensemen that just don’t have any chemistry together.

Can Larsson have chemistry with anyone right now? Even when healthy, Nurse+Larsson is a disaster. Larsson+Russell is always a disaster. If Klef+Larsson is a disaster...what's left to try?

I thought the whole team stunk after the first period. They were absolutely dominate the first period and were extremely unlucky not to be up 2 or 3 goals. Then they come out in the second and literally stopped playing. Koskinen with 2 brutal goals. Klef and Larsson where gong shows. McDavid in the first period looked like he was playing against a bunch of 12 yr olds, deking through the whole team and looked like it was a video game where you push the turbo button non stop, then nothing. He stopped skating.

Brutal effort.

Not hitting the panic button yet, and the Oilers have banked a bunch of points already, which is good, but goal differential starting to come back down to earth (currently +4, projects to +11 on the season). At this point, I think it's fair to say the Oilers record is better than they've played on the season as a whole.

Oilers Goal Differential
17/18: 234 GF / 263 GA (-29)
18/19: 232 GF / 274 GA (-42)
19/20 (82 game pace): 257 GF / 254 GA (+3) in 64 games
2021 (82 game pace):269 GF / 235 GA (+34) after 38 games

Worth noting, +11 is likely a playoff team - albeit not a divisional winner. If we can hold at that level we're at least going to the dance.

The flaws of this team are starting to get exposed - despite some production of late from the depth guys, there's still far too much reliance on the first line. With Nuge's production at 5v5 nearly non-existent thus far this year, we aren't even getting the second line output we did last year. Also worth noting that a bunch of the late "depth scoring" is still created by Draisaitl or McDavid (see Archibald goal, some of the Khaira goals).

The goaltending is also coming back down to earth as we feared it might. Here's hoping last night was just a blip for Koskinen and he reverts back to early season form quickly because Smith's struggled for weeks now, and so we may need to outscore our issues when he's in the net.

I've still been pleasantly surprised with the defence - while inexperienced, they've generally been alright. Again, last night is probably an exception, but if you're rating the biggest holes, I'm slotting that one down below scoring wingers, depth players, and competent goaltending.

I think Koski is playing too much, Smith is heading into his slump... secondary scoring is a challenge because there really isn't any.

Our defensive coverage was really poor last night. Really bad game to watch.

Our defensive coverage was really poor last night. Really bad game to watch.

Last night only ties Koskinen for the number of starts this year with Smith. They've cut it right down the middle so far with 15 starts each. Koskinen's seen 960 minutes of action, compared to 854 minutes for Smith with the difference being a couple relatively early pulls for Smith and some extra OT minutes for Koskinen. Shots against is pretty even too - Koskinen 463 - Smith 392. Goals against, Koskinen 42 - Smith 41.

The two have truly shared the net thus far this year. If Koskinen can't handle this much time, then we're in deep trouble - Smith's faltering, and we have another two years of Koskinen at big bucks...so hopefully he's not peaking at a 30 start a year goalie...We probably want him to play 45-50 this year.

(Out of interest, what was the number of games for Smith that results in him getting his bonus? Is it games started? or games played?)

Smith: Games Played Bonus: $125,000 at each of the following levels (20, 25, 30, 35 gms) & $250,000 at each of the following levels (40, 45 gms) + Playoff Qualification & Rounds Won Bonus: $750,000 max earnable (broken down by qualifiaction, first 3 rounds won and gms won in those rounds)

I'm astounded they are playing down the middle great research there Adam!

do think Koskinen is having trouble with the amount of games he's being asked to play. I'm probably not right but I do not have high confidence in that guy.

I've stopped using nhl.com a while ago because the redid how stats were presented. Glad to see it's still useful.

Thanks!

Smith looks likely for at least 500k of bonus from the 35 game mark. We really should be playing him more sparingly for a while until he looks like he has his crap together. That extra playoff 750k must be broken down in 125k's too with so many conditions. Probably 125k for just making it, then more if he actually plays and wins games, and 125k automatically for each successive round we get to.

These things seem to never be part of any coaching decision on goaltenders - see Stolarz & Montoya - but you're right. If he's not excelling, I'd tilt away from playing him unless I really feel Koskinen can't handle the minutes. No point in paying more and potentially impacting future cap space with bonus payments this year.

If Hitch or McLellan were still here, I bet if some media guy brought up how there is an added advantage to playing Koskinen, who is playing better anyways, because Smith playing more would result in more bonuses, I bet Smith would play 95% of the games the rest of the season, with no regard to his performance :)

You can't be serious? He's 10-3. 2.63GA, .917%. He had a bad game last night. They happen to all goalies. Look at the garbage last couple of weeks for Price. I know, I had in my fantasy, he sucked. Koskinen has been fantastic all year, that was the first legit bad game he has had. I am pretty confident he will play a hell of a game the next one.
