What foul sorcery is this? That Lord Tippett is a powerful conjurer.

It was a bit on the ugly side, but good teams find ways to win.
We may be cheering for a good team, but I'm not ready to declare such sillyness yet. Tentatively these are good times, Tarkus!

Exciting win.
Didn’t mind the line combos in OT, but am I off my rocker to suggest that Kassian might also be a good placeholder while 97 and 29 catch their wind? He has the speed to fix problems out there.

I know he's on a heater, but I wasn't a fan of having Neal out there AT ALL. He was behind the play the entire time, and Subban burned him to set up a great scoring chance at the end of OT. Would rather have had Jurco or one of the other quicker guys out there.
Still...got away with the 2 pts somehow, so I'll take it.

Didn’t realize Neal ended up being awarded that goal on the RNH shot.
Must have been when I was chowing my Taco.

Oilers did not deserve this win at all. Not enough energy, not enough fight, enough luck.

4-0 for only the 4th time in franchise history. I’ll take it. You know what else I would take? Hall next summer if he makes it to UFA.
Have we won the Lucic trade yet?

Yeah I wanted add that as my reason for asking if Kassian is a crazy idea. Thought I would get jumped because Neal is scoring, but to me, that other units only job is to make sure they don’t get scored on while 97 and 29 catch their wind. Thanks for doing the heavy lifting for me. ;)

You know damn well that the Flamers fans wouldn't admit to this even if they saw Neal hoisting up another Cup in an Oilers jersey.

Yep, the Oilers got some breaks in this one. In the day, that McDavid goal would have been disallowed due to intent to blow the whistle. Also breaks I thought on some non-calls. Are the Oilers superseding younger teams like NJ in getting vet non-calls?
The Oilers got outworked for most of this one, NJ of course in the 2nd of back to backs. Would have loved to see them come out and dominate, but they stayed close, found a way to tie and a way to win.
I'll frigging take it.

But he did slash the guy that scored it, soooooo... it’s even?

I was wondering about that, Neal didn't get burnt like we used to see with McClellan somehow trotting Looch out there or even Maroon, but I don't think the Real Deal has the wheels for 3 on 3.

Ugly game by the Oil, looked like last years team, no show against a team that played the night before, but unlike teams past came away with 2 pts

Well, Lucic slashed a Dallas guy on the leg after he beat Lucic to the net to score. And now 3 goals later the flames tied the game 2-2. I assume the flames came back because of Lucic's toughness with the slash on the 1-0 goal, so no, trade is still tied.

Big bite of redemption for Koskinen, I didn't see the whole game but he looked confident from what I did see.
If him and Smith both find their grooves then we have a chance to stick with it.

And he had zero shots. Tough to score when you have 1 SOG in four games. My Flames buddies sound like I did. Trying to say Lucic earned his money doing the dirty work. I knew I was lying to myself and I can see it in them. Love it.

Every victory we can bank early on in the season is money in the bank. This is a .475 team at worst. Couple more wins and we are the Avs of 2018. Hot start and hold on.
Heck. We might even be a decent team, but I’d be happy with sneaking in to the playoffs.

I thought they played sloppy but I wouldn’t call it a no show. Guys were pumping their legs, but erroneously. Tried to be too cute. The simple plays like Bear’s outlet play on the 1st Oil goal would have money all night. Their d zone exits got sloppy.

I'm really interested to see this team play some of the top tier teams in the league. It'll be a while though. It's probably for the best they're banking points now.

So I didn't stay up to watch the game, I had work for the first time in 3 weeks and got home very tired, so tried to stay awake, but succumbed to shut eye about 30 minutes before the game started. Maybe me not watching live is the good omen this team needs, let's see what happens on Saturday when I'm at another sporting event when we face off with the Rangers.
Enough of that, were we playing great hockey? No. Did we get some luck? Yes.
How many times can we say an individual had a brain fart moment that nearly or indeed did cost us? None that I can recall having just watched the game through. That's the sort of improvement I'm happy to see, we know that Kossi will be beaten glove side lots, we know it's his weakness, so why keep highlighting it? We have to believe that the coaching staff are trying to work on it, though it doesn't seem to be working and till it does or we get rid it's going to keep happening. Apart from he did what he's paid to do and did will during the OT and Shoot Out.
Bear and Persson impressed for me. Again nothing special, but for two rookies they did the job, they weren't out of place and for rookie D that's what you want. Gain some confidence, from doing the job your asked then add to your game, Bear looks to want to start shooting the puck more and that's great to see. Giving these two the run of games right now will only help for when Bouch and Broberg are coming through.
As I started off, this performance didn't blow me away, but it's early days with a new coach and the signs are looking good. It's also way to early to start predicting we may have cracked the league and be play off bound, but if we carry on doing the simple things right, limiting the mistakes we've got a better chance of reaching post season that we'll have over many of the recent years.
Take me home, country road
to the place where I belong
to Alberta, to see the Oilers
take me home, country road

I do like watching our top line in OT. Also Hall looks even better this year.
Concerns:
1 goal this year from the bottom 6. We know from past years that comes back to bite you when the big line gets shut down
Constantly playing from behind. Comeback wins aren't a sustainable model for success.
Koskinen. They were targeting his glove hand and had some success. He also got lucky in OT (Hall) and the shootout (Gusev).
Positives:
It was very nice to get that goal call for a change.
James Neal breaking his 52 minute goal scoring drought
Maybe this hot streak gives the bottom half of the lineup time to get their systems in place and we have an okay season.
You can't always get what you want, but if you try sometimes, you just might find, you can get a lottery pick.

I thought the Oilers looked a little sluggish though the Devils are an extremely fast team but it wasn't as good of a game as they had against the Islanders. Still won though!!
I thought Koskinen was excellent. He made some BIG saves and was a reason they won. That's 3rd goal was a bit of BS because he got knocked over but I understand why they didn't challenge because I doubt it gets overturned.
Neal, holy man. Another goal. Already tied his output from last year. Has more goals in the first 4 games than any other Oiler in their history. I don't expect him to continue at this clip but I have to think (knock on wood for nothing bad to happen) getting over 20 is a lock at this point. That's all you can ask for. It cost them giving up the anchor and I think dressing room cancer Lucic and a 3rd for a 20+ goal scorer. I do that a 100 times over.
Neal stat line in a sleepy team win.
1 goal, -1, 0 pim, 1 shot, 1 hit, 19.28
Lucic stat line in a come from behind win where I saw in a highlight that he lost his man to give up a goal.
0 pts, -1, 0 pim, 0 shots, 1 hit. 12:34. So everything that Lucic supposedly brings to the Flames and that the media rave about he didn't, he doesn't score and is a cause for a goal against. Just goes to show that for some games, he can do something of limited value but for most games, when a team doesn't engage him or play a heavy style, he does nothing. Thank you again Flames.
Bear continues to impress me. Persson keeps getting better. The PP is lethal right now and the PK is excellent.
The nice thing about a game like this is Tippett knows that wasn't their best. There are things to clean up so he has teaching moments. There are a lot of new faces, new coaching staff and a new system so I am sure this team hasn't fully gelled yet or know the system inside and out. So there is room to improve. The good part is there isn't a part of their game or players where you can definitively point at and have big concern over. Best part. They won again and are banking points. Doesn't matter how you win, just win and they are 4-0.

Playing with fire a lot so far this season. Lots of times down a goal in the 3rd and coming back.
Depth lines took a bit better this year, but still not much in the way of results. Gotta figure something out there. Players needed to get some offense from those lines might not be on the NHL roster right now.

That's my concern too. If the depth guys are getting 10ish goals each, about half of them should already have one. It's early to panic but also early to think the team is fixed.

Oh look at you guys, bringing the negativity! Can't you just let people be happy!?!
On a serious note, it's concerning to see us getting outplayed at 5v5 - we'll need to improve there if we hope to keep this going. I seem to remember one year where we had a strong October but the underlying numbers were all awful, and then things caught up to us pretty quickly, but all those bad years are starting to blend together in my mind.
Right now, they're riding some things we can't expect to keep at their pace - for instance, shooting the lights out on the powerplay at 40% - but those anomalies give you a little time to work on the deficiencies, so hopefully Tippett can find some way to improve the team there.
Another 25+ minute night for both McDavid and Draisaitl, while the entire fourth line played under 10 minutes.

Koski was great in the OT and shoot out to get us the two points. The puck movers are still learning but have been a very good addition. Nice to see Bear fitting in so well and contributing some to the offense. As Persson gains more confidence he will likely be a bigger part of that too IMO.

I agree with you. A lot of changes for the team. It's going to take time to get into sync. I think the bottom 6 is a work in progress. But they are 4-0.

Just to get rid of Lucic and his no move for the expansion draft is worth a 3rd round pick in my books. Every goal Neal scores is just bonus.
