Tyler Wright and Archie Henderson both formally of the Wings have joined the Org.

Hard to not upgrade our scouting staff with any change. The pro scouting at least. Wonder how good Archie Henderson is at finding heavy hockey players.

Is knowing the current boss still the minimum qualification for a job with the Oilers? I'm sure these two were the best people available.

Former Oilers first round pick Tyler Wright comes back to the fold!

He carved out an okay career...but not in Edmonton. Just 29 games and 2-0-2 in that time.

http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/pdisplay.php?pid=5808

He was picked 3 ahead of Kovalev and 4 ahead of Naslund, but to be fair, in 1991, there wasn't nearly as strong scouting of Europeans.

The team could definitely use new blood in the scouting department. I wonder if Chiarelli's brother and Messier's brother keep their jobs?

Seems like a strange thing for you to take offence at - why don't you want to know a little about who Tyler Wright is?

That link to hockeydb was pretty outrageous, I know, but I thought I could sneak it past the censors!

I look forward to seeing how you fix CrusaderPi's post!

Dont need to, its fairly accurate, both guys were brought in to the org by the current GM, i doubt there was a job posting tossed on indeed.com for the roles.

No surprises here. Remember, Chiarelli hired Fenton’s son in Edmonton. Likely doing Pete a solid here. Mike Chiarelli had been an amateur scout under Peter every year since 2006. #Oilers

Had no idea Chiarelli's brother was a scout ... faint
P. Chiarelli has to go down as worst Oiler GM in its history... and in the NHL there must be a short list of who was worse ..

I believe he was the chief amateur scout the last 3-4 years. It was a package deal. Hire one Chia, get multiple ones for free!

Also Paul Messier is a scout.

Good news! Paul Messier survived the purge. Cichocki also was retained, so Chiarelli seems to be the only victim of the axe.

Well you cannot axe a hall of famer's brother, I mean that would mean they wouldn't show up at Oiler games (for a fee)* home or away and free admittance to the game to pep talk the boys of the yesteryear days!

Any changes to our pro scouting needed to happen as it was abysmal last season.

*I'm not sure they are paid but with this org they probably are.

Just for fun, how would you rank the Oilers GM's since Sather? It would be interesting to see how the rest fall into place for people. Assuming Sather is #1 for all, I would go like this from worst to best:

5 Chia - Did lots, mostly bad, left a HUGE mess. Set the team back.

4 MacT - Lots of small moves in a short time, but not enough to really break much.
Ference/Nikitin/Pouliot contracts ouch.

3 Tambo – Not sure what he actually did? I think he napped a lot. Hall/Eberle deals were good.

2 Lowe - Plenty to criticize during his tenure, but he got Pronger and made the SCF, so that’s something.

** massive gap here ***

1 Sather – Self-explanatory.

Looks like they've got worse with each GM!

In Chia's defense, I'll give him some credit for at least having the balls to do something. Clearly, it was the wrong course of action, but unlike MacT and Tambo who couldn't seem to really do anything, Chia did do a whole lot!

In Chia's defense, I'll give him some credit for at least having the balls to do something. Clearly, it was the wrong course of action, but unlike MacT and Tambo who couldn't seem to really do anything, Chia did do a whole lot!

MacT did a lot! He had more trades than anyone else in the two years he ran the team. Especially in year one, when he had something like twice as many as the next nearest GM. It was constantly shuffling deck chairs to get another mediocre goalie or 6/7 defenceman!

I'm pretty much on board with your assessments:

1. Sather - so far ahead that it's not funny.

2. Lowe - Debated between Lowe and Tambellini. Tambo didn't make the team worse, Lowe usually did...but then Lowe did have that one amazing season, so he probably gets the nod. Better to have one shining moment and a whole lot of completely awful than just mostly awful. If this is an all-time NHL GMs or hockey execs, Lowe is still near the very bottom of the list though - especially since he's never really been gone, and he's never really been out of hockey operations here, weighing in on the decisions of all those GMs who've followed him.

3. Tambellini - I kind of consider this an extension of the Lowe GM-reign anyhow. They gave Tambo the position of GM because the only out in his contract with Vancouver was if he was GM, and we know that Lowe was HEAVILY involved as POHO. We even have documentary evidence of this since they filmed an ill-advised chronicles of how they rebuilt a hockey franchise back in to a new dynasty how they successfully wooed Eric Belanger to the organization!

4. MacTavish. He wins this by a whisker. Basically everything he did was bad. It started with that dreadful press conference, then every time he opened his mouth, he made the team worse. Almost the only good thing he did was give Nelson the head-coaching job, but even that he had to make in to a gong show, with the training wheels session, and then the insistence that it wasn't Nelson who was the reason the team was doing better, it was because he had traded for Klinkhammer...

When he was replaced (even though he didn't leave, and may not have even changed offices in Kingsway), you had to think that you couldn't actually have anyone perform worse at that job...and then came:

5. Chiarelli - Chia's legacy is going to always be that he made multiple trades where he sent elite talent away and only ONCE (Kessel trade) got an adequate return, and even then, it took a team completely imploding to get him there. Basically, he just got lucky that that deal wasn't Burmistrov and Siemens for Kessel. Amazingly, there still may be a team that hires him back in to management somewhere...(for what it's worth, I hope it happens!!!)

It now seems like Chiarelli is as bad as anyone could possibly be and we couldn't see worse than that...but I'm knocking on wood now just in case.

The farm team was probably in as good as or better shape than it's ever been when Chia got the axe. Not sure how much he had to do with that but it's something. At least there are real prospects in the system now and especially on defence which has been so lack luster in the past. Granted some of it was just dumb luck like picking Bouchard where they did. Has to be a positive move by Holland bringing in a couple of people he knows and trusts.

I don't really know that I'm giving a lot of credit for the farm team. The team won a playoff round last year, but our actual prospect pipeline isn't that deep. There's only a handful of the guys in the organization who have a real shot at being NHL players, and none of them are forwards we should expect ever to play a meaningful top-six role at the NHL level.

That's miles better than having no farm team at all like we did for two seasons under Lowe (2005-06 and 2006-07), but it's not exactly a pipeline of excellence.

Chiarelli was schizophrenic with the farm team too.

Here's 2015-16:
http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/leagues/seasons/teams/007 3882016.html
Veteran dominated team with some contributions from Pre-Chia prospects such as Khaira, Slepyshev, Pitlick and Oesterle. Virtually all the biggest contributors (Ford, Hunt, Miller, Hamilton) pre-dated Chiarelli. His big stamp on the team was adding Griffin Reinhart, who got in 30 games and put up 10 points.

Team went 31-28-9 under Gerry Fleming. Missed the playoffs.

2016-17
http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/leagues/seasons/teams/007 3882017.html
Older players still a big driver, and again lots of guys who pre-date Chia at the top of the list - Lander, LaLeggia, Hamilton, Oesterle. Two Chia signings stand out here - Currie (signed a year earlier) and Beck. Patrick Russell is on the squad now as a Chia signing, but meh.

For NHL-bound talent, we have Puljujarvi in the second half of the season (he could have played his entire 18-year old season in Bakersfield), Oesterle, Khaira and 9 games of Slepyshev.

33-29-6 under Fleming. Still no playoffs.

2017-18
http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/leagues/seasons/teams/007 3882018.html

The first Chia era draft picks start arriving on the scene. They're young, so limited impact, but Bear and Jones make the jump. There's SO MANY defencemen that it's hard for anyone to get a great shot. That's in part because Chiarelli signed everyone available to a deal. A very low percentage of those players were useful pieces. Rattie and Malone were decent. Patrick Russell was not awful in his second season. Currie led the team in points. Almost everyone from the Pre-Chia era has turned over by this point. Only LaLeggia and Hamilton play significant roles.

For NHL-level prospects, we have Bear, Jones, Puljujarvi and that's about it.

31-27-10 for Fleming's last season. Again out of the playoffs. Fleming was criticized for playing the vets too much, but it'mostly what he got from Chiarelli. The team delivered him exceptionally few blue chip prospects, so which ones did he fail to progress? When the GM signs 10 mid-20s AHLers to two-way deals, is he supposed to not play them?

2018-19
http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/leagues/seasons/teams/007 3882019.html
Benson and Marody are breakouts in their rookie AHL seasons and lead the team in points. New signing Gambardella is pretty decent too. Currie the last remaining player as far as I can tell who's been on the team all four years (he has one more year left too).

Chia's minor league acquisitions continue to be pretty hit or miss. Gambardella is good, but Larkin and Vesey can't even crack the AHL lineup. Still lots of relatively old guys playing important roles (Callahan, Day, Gust)

NHL calibre prospects again include Bear and Jones, as well as Yamamoto (when not hurt), Benson and Marody.

First year under Jay Woodcroft, and the team goes 42-21-5, making the playoffs and winning one round.

The interesting thing is that the team wasn't markedly better in scoring. They didn't have any real standouts offensively - Lander still out-performed the guys at the top of this roster. Starrett's goaltending at 0.918 was really quite good, but two years ago Nick Ellis played 34 games with similar numbers alongside Gustavsson who was .917. I think the defence is better than it has been, but looking at these teams side-by-side, there's nothing to suggest this team is miles better than a couple years earlier...but they did win a handful more games and that was enough to get them in the playoffs. And 5 legit prospects is better than some of those years above.

Moving forward

Interesting to note, there's VERY few AHL veterans under contract now. The Oilers have just 6 players not on their entry level deals - Malone, Gambardella, Russell, Currie, Lowe, and Starrett. There could yet be some added but for the moment, it's looking like a younger version of the team than we've seen in years - including compared to last year.

Weird quirk - Colby Cave has the lowest contract on the Oilers at $675K (tied with Keegan Lowe). Everyone else makes some premium over the league minimum if they're called up.

Anyhow, all this to say, it's better, but not world's better with Chia from where it stood when he took it over, and the difference may be one or two better prospects only.

Tyler Wright took over the Red Wings' scouting in July 2013.

Between 2014 and 2018 the Red Wings made 41 draft selections.

Of those, and excluding the 2018 draft class, it would appear that the Red Wings have drafted one NHL regular in Dylan Larkin.

Pretty much

Dat skullet.

Allowing a running start for just 1 year for the single lap race record though. Sigh...NHL.

Every allstar game the Red Wings trolls are out bragging about how no one can beat Larkin's record, lol.
