An overage goalie from the KHL? I had to triple check and make sure this was the guy they actually drafted.
MacT will be taking care of development for this guy.

Apparently he has two year contract to finish in the KHL first, Bob Green said by then it will give their current prospects a chance to prove themselves one way or the other, as with Konovalov.
Green also mentioned in the interview that he's bigger than what they thought he was after interviewing him, the kid is listed at 6 ft., so maybe its an old height stat that pops up in the websites.. sometimes a benefit (or detriment) of being an obscure pick.. bonus for us.

Smartest guys in the room!
But actually I have no idea, might be a good pick, might not. Based solely on what I've read in the previous four points it is a confusing pick though.

He had a .930 sav% last year in the KHL and didn't use it to get the Oilers to give him a 2.5M contract?

Ty Rattie off to a hot start though.
I do genuinely wonder what his story would be this year if he hadn't got hurt early in the season last year. He never seemed to be able to find his place or stride after that.

It sure didn't help him that we hired the one coach who'd already given up on him once. Preconceptions and first impressions are awfully difficult things to shake. Rattie struggled to get ice time the rest of the season, and never really got a top line push under Hitchcock. Very limited powerplay time too. His 53 seconds a game was 14th on the team, about the same usage as Yamamoto, Zykov and Caggiula (although it's twice as much as what Puljujarvi got, so there's that!)

I wouldn't be at all surprised if Rattie doesn't come back to the NHL and find a steady job, a lot worse players playing in the league, he's got some speed and a snipe shot.

Honest question: why is this guy in the draft? How does that work? Like as an 20 year old, wouldn't he be eligible to be signed as an undrafted free agent?
I don't like spending draft picks on goalies as a general principle, but I'm just wondering did he have to declare his eligibility and waited until this year or why now?

Lokomotiv eliminated from the KHL playoffs today. Konovalov’s contract with them officially expires in a couple weeks and he’ll be free to sign with the Oilers.

Reports out of the K that Ilya Konovalov has opted to not resign a KHL contract and will be coming to North America.
I’d imagine he signs his ELC relatively soon.
Save percentages over his 3 seasons there;
.930
.912
.923
LETS GO! I’m jazzed about this kid. We’re realistically not getting Cossa in the draft, and while Skiiiinnneeeerrr(!!!!) has had a good year in the A, I strongly believe that Konovalov is our best goalie prospect bet to make an impact at the NHL level.

ahhhh, don't do it man. Don't get people hopes up that the Oilers could actually have drafted a good NHL goalie outside the 1st round.

Konovalov's odds of making the NHL aren't good based on his height, only 1 goalie in the NHL that's 5'-11" with 20 games played or more, out of 54, and that's Halak. Only 7 goalies that are 6'-0", next 48 goalies are all over 6'-0".. trend is definitely tall goalies...
Interesting, I remember during the draft Green came out and said that Kononvalov was actually taller than they thought he was, stats at the time had him at 5'-11", so I figured he must be at least 6'-0".. but his current KHL stats say his height is still 5'-11", so Green either can't read a tape measure, or covert cm to inches.
just checking out Lokomotive website.. check out Pasquale, he's 6'-3" and same or better save % as Konovalov.. in more games.. he's 30 .. won Calder Cup.

I guess we will find out what we got pretty soon. If he acclimated well to the AHL next season, he could be fast tracked to the NHL in 22/23 as a backup or who knows. We are just slightly better with goalies than the Flyers.

Most likely to let him sign in the KHL as speculated.
