Edmonton Oilers @EdmontonOilers
#Oilers General Manager & President of Hockey Operations Ken Holland announces that Keith Gretzky will remain with the team in the role of Assistant General Manager.

Hopefully we get to know EXACTLY what Kretzky is responsible for in hockey ops.

Guess this is was on Oilers now and Keith is mainly responsible for Bakersfield and will be involved with Amateur Scouting still.

I have no problem with him in that role.

Great move in my eyes! So far a steady but successful off-season. No fancy, flavour of the month hiring, and I have not checked with ancestry but I believe there is little to no relation tot he OBC. Very solid, steady offseason. So far...

You’re making a joke here? Right?

Hmmm, are we sure Holland had complete autonomy?

Yup! He did an exhaustive search and picked the interim guy for his job as the best man for the job! Obviously.

Standard statement: Until otherwise proven everything the Oilers do is dumb and wrong. I'm against this particular announcement for that reason.

Nicholson did a whole big search, complete with several interviews and they didn't even hire any of the interviewees, so I think we can throw that kind of process out the window from here on in.

Much better to just grab the tried and true method of just grabbing the nearest warm body and putting them in the role. Besides, Keith was already in that office. It would have been so awkward to ask him to move...

You are exhausting.

This forum has turned into a pessimistic cesspool of bitching and whining about the same topics consistently.

#RDOilerfan is possibly reformed, time will tell.

I love your that you're SOOOOO negative in almost every one of your posts, while insisting that everyone else should be positive. It's amazing really. You must be a joy to be around.

You need to take a break from the team and probably hockey in general, you seem to get way to worked up over a game.

PoolParty wrote on Tue, 26 February 2019 16:20

You must be whole bunch of fun at parties.

Fu9king hell. Can any of you honestly raise a hand and say Talbot had anything more then back up value please do so now. It amazes me the amount of effort some of you put into sh1tt!ng on this team, its truly astonishing.

I dont see why he deserves kudos, the guy is garbage on his play by play duties for the golden bears and his morning show is a dumpster fire

What it comes down to on this and any other platform is that until the Oilers start winning playoff games no hire will be the right one. Katz and OEG could build the ideal GM from scratch and this forum in particular would sh1t all over it.

And all that just in your last 10-12 posts!

SO KG is officially taking over Craig MacT's role under Chiarelli, Number Two!

You can't always get what you want, but if you try sometimes, you just might find, you can get a lottery pick.

SO KG is officially taking over Craig MacT's role under Chiarelli, Number Two!

To be fair, MacT has been vice president of something or another for at least a year. Keith was AGM under Chia too.

From all accounts (ie. from what Wayne told Jim Matheson to say), he did a bang-up job in that role.

One thing I found interesting when I heard Gretzky interviewed today was when he was asked about Yamo, KG came right out and said he was rushed and should have spent the whole time in the AHL instead of getting yanked up and down. Kind or sounds like there was some disagreement on a few things between he and his former boss Chia.

Either that or it's just so painfully obvious now that to say anything else would look ridiculous. I mean, he still doesn't weigh 160 lbs, and he's posted 1-4-5 in 26 NHL games despite playing most of that with McDavid or Draisaitl...so it's not exactly an easy move to defend in retrospect - whether he agreed at the time or not.

Don't tell me you really believe that Chiarelli was the only one in the Oilers management group who thought it a good idea to "sell hope" by spotlighting top draft picks with extended NHL auditions at 18 and 19 years of age...

That was some serious horsecrap by McLellan. Yams looked so over his head and kept getting spoonfed prime minutes while Pulju was being punished for whatever reason.

God...can we please be entering a period of time where what Oilers management and coaching does actually seems to make some sense? Pleeeeaaaseeee???

I have personally concluded that Pulju and his agent did get Chia to agree to 40 games per season on the active roster in the NHL (450k salary per year guaranteed, plus burning UFA/RFA years), and they threatened to stay for 1-2 years in Finland back in 2016 if Chia did not comply. And Chia gave in and agreed because we were so desperate for wingers. And that would definitely have made an old school guy like McLellan instantly sour on Pulju and refuse to give him even an inch of free ice time. We know Chia is a pushover, and Pulju's agent has shown himself to be quite a dick, and just like when Yak's agent said Yak needs better ice time, McLellan permanently stuck Yak in the dog house. So, maybe how Pulju was handled actually does all make sense, it just stinks.

It would be nice to have them manage and coach professionally and not get caught up in office politics or make decisions based on how good a player's English skills are. I think there is ample evidence that McLellan has a strong preference for North American players and that bias plays a role on deciding how many chances someone gets.

Players are always going to want more ice time, and agents are always going to advocate for their clients. A good coach communicates to a player what they need to do to win that opportunity and gives them chances to prove themselves. But then, McLellan was never much of a communicator.

If Chia made promised roster time deals for an 18 year old rookie, he's a fool. He definitely gave himself virtually no options with either Puljujarvi OR Yamamoto - basically set it up so they had to make the team, because there was just no competition for right wing spots - especially when the team was trying to play all of McDavid, Draisaitl and Nuge down the middle.

Chia is an idiot, but holding Pulju on the NHL roster just long enough to burn the RFA year. That's not something you do just by being stupid. IMO that is something you do because you're a stupid pushover that got owned by a players agent. Need both the stupid and pushover aspects to be coming into play :)

I'm pretty sure he just got put back in his old job. MacT was never #2 under Chiarelli. He was VP Hockey Operations specifically dealing with AHL affiliate and Pro Scouting.

MacT needed to go just because he was involved with the atrocity that was Oilers pro scouting last year.

MacT WAS AGM the first year that Chia was here...maybe the second too, I can't remember which summer we hired Keith. Howson was #3.

He got his VP title when Keith came on board.

Matty showed us all!!

Jim Matheson @NHLbyMatty
Holland probably sees himself in Keith Gretzky, an amateur scout who worked his way up. Took lots of heat suggesting Gretzky be next Oiler GM before Holland came free but Holland certainly sees his value.

He insisted Kretzky was GM material. Kretzky didn't become GM, but since he became AGM, it means Matty was right that he was GM quality. Apparently...

He's pulling himself back up!

Called out Dreger for releasing something that Matty didn't deem breaking news worthy (even though Dreger just presented it as an update on a previous storyline he commented on)

Calling that Keith was absolutely NHL GM material, and totally vindicated when Keith kept his assistant GM job.

Matty is coming back!

I've been seeing a lot of positivity online from Oilers fans from "all of the changes" but really all I've seen is:

- Holland named GM (I didn't mind this)

- Lateral coach move from Hitchcock to Tippet

- Mac T takes off to the KHL on his own (who knows if he didn't if he would have been moved into another position)

- Bob Nicholson who is part of the problem is PROMOTED

- Scott Howson who caused this mess is still employed in some capacity (I don't even want to bother to search to know what his title is)

- Kevin Lowe who caused this mess is still employed in some capacity

- Some entertainment guy from Toronto is hired

- Keith Gretzky is named AGM (I don't mind this move)

Anything else I'm missing? A lot of "changes" but really a whole lotta nothin'. Pretty much everyone is still here.

I'm the positive guy here too.

"Bah Gawd! Would somebody stop the damn draft!"

I've been seeing a lot of positivity online from Oilers fans from "all of the changes" but really all I've seen is:

- Holland named GM (I didn't mind this) Agreed. We were hiring someone. This was probably the smartest move and it's early, but he seems to be doing and saying all the right things

- Lateral coach move from Hitchcock to Tippet Sounds like Tippet is more of a players coach. Hitchcock? Not so much. That's a positive and he's a good coach that has worked with very little in the past and succeeded.

- Mac T takes off to the KHL on his own (who knows if he didn't if he would have been moved into another position) We will never know, but this was a bit out of left field. I think a reasonable person would connect the new hire to his leaving.

- Bob Nicholson who is part of the problem is PROMOTED I work in the federal government where we often hide our mistakes in special projects with fancy titles. Hoping this is a similar move.

- Scott Howson who caused this mess is still employed in some capacity (I don't even want to bother to search to know what his title is) He still needs to go

- Kevin Lowe who caused this mess is still employed in some capacity

- Some entertainment guy from Toronto is hired If the switch the toilet paper from under to over in Edmonton it's front page news. FYI, it's always over and never under. For what it's worth, if he can get the off ice fan experience up to par with other organizations then it's a great move. Nothing like paying $300 on a seat in a beautiful rink and have zero off ice entertainment. Out of all of the rinks I have visited Edmonton is by far and away the worst. Junior hockey does more

- Keith Gretzky is named AGM (I don't mind this move) Has appeared to have survived Chiarelli coruscated which has to be a feather in his cap. I like him.

The PR guy may have been hired by Trudeau and helped with the recycling presser. Far too many times our management looked bad in interviews or leaked information for no good reason. Maybe things will change?
