Apparently a conversation with agent today. Is this a demand from the agent as he doesn’t want his client to be a grinder?

https://www.tsn.ca/rishaug-oilers-open-to-trading-puljujarvi -1.1258284

Sure a lot of interim GM stuff happening. Nothing is changing with this organization.

Seriously Gretzky and friends, shut the hell up.

Why is this out there? Do they think that's going to help the confidence of a 20 year old? Just a stupid thing to be telling their lapdog Rishaug.

“Head down ass up. We’re doing lots of hard work up here. We even rented a floor of hotel rooms. We want it even more than the coaching staff!”

I will bet they even work until 5:00 today. Yeah I know it’s friday, but there’s playoffs to worry about after all.

Trade deadline coming up AND Sekera to work back in to the mix? They basically have no choice but to work til 5 pm...of course, that does include the 2 hour lunch, and to be honest, the afternoon is a bit of a blur once Wayner shows up with a few bottles of his finest vintage...

No chance. It's the Friday of a long weekend and the team is out east. They're already in Kelowna.

Listening to Dreger they have the Sekera button ready to push, Talbot for Stolarz as the foundation but are stuck on the addition. It’s a no brainer move, no? Pull the trigger, have emergency call up Montoya flown in from whatever beach he’s on and inform the emergency backup in Carolina that he may be called upon when it gets out of hand tonight. Lord knows that individual can’t be much worse than our current placeholder.

It's only a no-brainer move if you're ready to give up hope on the playoffs. Six points isn't an insurmountable gap. If you give away the goalie who's played better since the New Year for a pick and a random body, then you've thrown in the towel.

When you consider that the Oilers can be cap compliant without moving anyone, making a Talbot trade that isn't a clear win would be really poor management - would be an impediment to the argument that Keith is ready to be the non-interim GM...

Do you really think the Oilers can make the playoffs? Because I don't. Even if the points are able to be overcome, the number of teams in front of them cannot. Apparently the chance of playoffs is under 6%.

It's selling season.

At least with Stolarz he is a future asset and potential NHL player. Problem is, they have a backup in Koskinen. They need a starter.

I don't know about you guys, but a tandem of Koskinen and Stolarz doesn't really give me much confidence for next year either. I'm sure that confidence will definitely make season ticket holders want to renew.

Also, would anyone here be surprised to see Talbot (heck, even Brian Elliot) with better numbers and be the better goalie over Koksinen by this time next year?

I think they're dead in the water, but I don't know if the Oilers believe that yet. They're within striking distance still, so it's not out of the realm of possibility...

The optics of trading Talbot aren't good though, especially if the return is weak...it signals to the players that they don't believe they can do it. They're already trying to sell boxes and advertising for next year too...I'm sure that will be hard for them to admit defeat on...

The suggestion that they might need immediate help for Puljujarvi also suggests a still going-for-it attitude, although it would be so Oilers to do both deals and simultaneously signal surrender and never-say-die...

FWIW, Elliott is a UFA to be too, so if the Oilers were to acquire him, he likely wouldn't be here long.

Yeah, only way Elliott makes any sense to me is if they then flip him for another piece or if they sign him for next year.

Not saying he is the right guy, but I've very much not yet convinced that Koskinen is. They need to hedge that bet. It's very bad.

I think these things should be the work of the future GM. Or is that what’s actually happening?

They say they want some GM to come in to help them fix this team, but they want to make a bunch of moves prior. Partly because they are in a pinch. Does anyone in this organization look at a calendar? Chiarelli should have been fired ages ago.

Agreed entirely. If you're making a decision on players ahead of a new GM coming in, it really should just be 1) clearing out UFAs if you're not making the playoffs and B) opening up cap space for your successor by trading off bad ongoing contracts like Kassian and Russell and (although unlikely) Manning and Lucic.

But if Gretzky isn't really the interim GM and the Oilers have only said that so as to socialize people to the idea of him running the show then he is much more likely to try to make a splash and put his stamp on the team.

In case anyone missed it, Mark Spector gave him a plug in an article yesterday, saying that he isn't an old boy, that he's slogged his way up the ranks, that he's got a great eye for talent (and that that's why the Condors are on their current run), and that he's not just Wayne's little brother.

He's also suddenly been visible - which isn't what you see out of most guys with a true interim tag - they're just keeping the house clean, not giving interviews about what they need to do with the team...

They’re giving the fan base and early excuse for why it didn’t work, JP and the Oilers, because he lacked the confidence required to develop in the NA game.

“We’ve held discussions with the player about needing to get his confidence up and part of that was sending him to Bakersfield for a chunk of time however the player had informed us that he would rather stay in Edmonton in February than go to California as it reminds him more of home and really the player has had a tough adjustment to the NA lifestyle so we concluded it would be in the players best interest that he remain in Edmonton to be less home sick. Oh, and his English is progressing under Craig’s tutorship.”

My faith in this organizations ability to properly develop a skilled player makes me want them to trade a player they’re likely to regret trading. And as a fan of JP and of the team that makes me sick to say. But holy stroganoff.

Yep, Yakupov V2.0

Just setting us up for a trade, I am guessing at the draft or part way into next years early season disappointing start.
He will under perform "expectations", be traded for basically nothing, and the new full time GM Keith will trot out the "we did all we could, needs a change of scenery" story.

Soon after we will hear from the normally jovial Puljujarvi about how depressing and smothering it was playing on this team.

Rinse, repeat

Next up in order;
Yamo
Bouchard (after he is rushed into minutes he isnt ready for)
Whoever is drafted this year.

More like:

“We’ve held discussions with the player about needing to get his confidence up and part of that was sending him to Bakersfield for a chunk of time and the player responded...but we really didn't understand anything that he said since it was all in Finnish. We kinda regret not following through on the English lessons, but what's in the past is the past. Anyhow, we're really excited about what we can do with the second round pick in 2019 and the conditional 5th rounder in 2021.”

Rishaugs spin on 1260 is the organization believes Jesse will become a good player, but they need help sooner.

My question is how could this instant help fit under the cap if it was actually worth anything? Which means they will get a plug with a low contract with term.

I wonder if they hadn't rushed JP to the NHL without a plan on how to develop him if he might have be capable of helping now. Ah well.

But we wanted to get him over here ASAP to get acclimated to the NA way of life and the NA game. It’s on the player for not adapting in his almost 3 years here. We tried and he didn’t respond.

This organization is horrible with European players. Aside from Draistaitl in whom they tried to rush in (burning a year of his entry level), yet persevered despite the fact. I’m positive that if they didn’t land 97 and Draisaitl was expected to carry the mail, he would have been traded by now for not meeting expectations.

I mean, to be fair to the Oilers, they're not exactly great with North American players either.

Oilers Goal Differential
17/18: 234 GF / 263 GA (-29)

100% success with East Indians though.

Can't even make that claim, Kahiara's Canadian.

Come on Burnaby Jim, Jujhar hails from right across the Fraser River in India's second capital ;)

If Tarkus was still around, I do believe this would be deserving of an OFPOD. In his memory (I don't know if he's gone but he hasn't even done a drive-by in a couple of years) I'm giving you this lovely plate of Stroganoff, a Russian dish of sautéed pieces of beef served in a sauce with sour cream.

Stroganoff is so good.

I'm glad we're doing posts / puns of the day again. Good work.

I can’t believe I didn’t realize this was a Russian dish. I mean look at the name.

I’m so embarrassed. I thought it came from Kraft.

Rishaugs spin on 1260 is the organization believes Jesse will become a good player, but they need help sooner.

My question is how could this instant help fit under the cap if it was actually worth anything? Which means they will get a plug with a low contract with term.

It's amazing how creative they can get and how many different ways they can find to justify (in their minds) their bad decisions.

1 Cup

He's the next Magnus Paajarvi. Will eventually be traded (or picked off waivers next year), and tread water on 4th lines across the NHL.

It's too late. We've ruined him for ourselves.

Apparently a conversation with agent today. Is this a demand from the agent as he doesn’t want his client to be a grinder?

Sure a lot of interim GM stuff happening. Nothing is changing with this organization.

I assume our god of player evaluation and player development Howson is giving the thumbs up to quitting on Pulju. Therefore, I have 110% confidence this is the right move.

Never like Pool Party from draft day. He's just like Magnus. I hope I'm wrong and I hope other GMs disagree with me.

2015/2016 - This Kool-Aid tastes like McDavid flavoured Drain-O.
2016/2017 - This Kool-Aid is starting to taste like juice.
2017/2018 - I'm drinking this Kool-Aid, in hopes that it's Drain-O.
2018/2019 - Another round of Drain-O, good sir!
