Russel screening the goalie and a canon by Weber didn't help.

Question...why do the Oilers always look like they are a step behind the play?
Answer.... Because they are!!!!

With the exception of Conner, this is on point.

A PP - I have tempered my expectations. Hoping for 1 SOG and at least 20 seconds of zone time in the Montreal end...

That was a BS call on Draisaitl. Even the broadcast crew was like da poop?

As if. He gets through that and he’s on a 2-1 with McDavid. Terrible call.

With that... multiple PP goals?! Whaaaaaaat is happening!?

Garry Galley seems like an eastern commentator that had a preconceived idea of what was going to happen. When the Oilers were down he just kept saying 'look how right I was', and now that the Oilers are up he's just saying 'how is this happening?'.

I mean... there are probably a few thousand people asking the same thing... the Oilers up 3-2, with 2 PP goals and the other scored 2 seconds after a PP expired? What and how is this happening?

I’m liking Rattie’s play this weekend. Goes to the net, puts his nose in there and grinds. Exactly what we need from a guy on McDavids wing.

mmmmm, delicious game management. McDavid gets his stick slashed out of his hands right in front of the ref. BUt they always let McDavid draw a call, so can be ignored.

Apparently Claude Julian thinks that mugging from behind and hauling the player down by the head shouldn't be called a penalty.

That Domi ‘play’ on Draisaitl was pathetic. Probably gets that same thing done to him by his old man when he tried to take a turkey leg at Christmas

In the history of the league? Possible. Koskinen has to cover that, the DMan (didn’t see who it was) needs to not let Domi(? I think it was?) I’m on Koskinen to poke that out and keep it alive.

I’d wager they believe Russel is better suited to 3v3? Speed reasons. I dunno. A better question is raise is why is Chiasson out to take an offensive zone faceoff with Nuge on his wing?

He's a good shot blocker with a heart. It's literally impossible to score on the rush against the starfish defense. Exactly what the Oilers needed.

Just a shallow team. Like Oscargasm says, it's just his skating ability that his him out there. You have a bunch of D with no offensive talent to pick from, I guess you just pick the one that can skate best.

Ok, but why couldn't the Oilers (coaches or GM) pick a defenseman with some defensive ability to use? Simply having a guy with heart who can lay on the ground doesn't seem to be working.

By the way, everyone here and in the media who said the Oilers were struggling while Russell was injured because he was injured was wrong wrong wrong. He's not a good NHL defenseman.

He's probably our best defensive D IMO. Just can't move a puck to save his life so he's forcing the team to be in a constant defensive posture when he's out there. He got owned at the end there for sure, but all our D have moments like that. Not many can actually hustle to get in position to be owned like that 3v3 though. Most of our D would just be chasing that play through most of 3v3, which is just as bad, and probably worse.

Yep - watching that goal, everyone else has their man and Russell looks completely incompetent. Chiasson may not have great wheels but he’s still got his man, as does Nuge. One on one, Russell doesn’t just lose his guy, he lies down. Had Drouin not scored he would have had all kinds of opportunity to put that in on the rebound because his man is still lying on the ice 15 feet away.

If it was a one off, that would be one thing but Russell is forever doing that play. His gap control isn’t good and he’s always trying to set up a block to compensate for that. If the guy has any space at all, it always ends the same - the player blowing by while Russell does snow angels.

FWIW, in McD’s rookie season I loved that element of Russell’s game. He seemed uniquely unequipped to deal with McDavid’s speed. It was one of the reasons I was surprised to see the Oilers sign him. Their scouts should have had a really good look at his biggest weakness.

Why is Russell the D on the second line in OT? Where is Larsson?

I’d wager they believe Russel is better suited to 3v3? Speed reasons. I dunno. A better question is raise is why is Chiasson out to take an offensive zone faceoff with Nuge on his wing?

Russel because he has better wheels, Larsson will get eaten alive 3 on 3, but Chiasson is slow as molasses, bad call having him out 3 on 3... having said that LD managed to nullify a 2 on 0 just before that.

This is a team of ultra slim pickings. If someone doesn't like a certain guy out there, I think if they step back and try to think of an alternative it makes a lot more sense.

Maybe if there was a little more character in the room though, one of the slim picking players will magically become elite. Come on Gretzky, find us some character! I bet Jack Johnson and his 5 year deal could be had.

You could see Connor want that puck once the two of them were alone, but Drai kept it while also slowing Connor and the play down, allowing the D to catch up and nullify the golden opportunity.

He gives it to Connor at the blueline once it’s turned over, Connor gets a clear breakaway and Leon hustles his butt for any potential rebound if Connor can’t bury it in alone on Price. We wouldn’t even have to talk about Chiasson and Russell on the ice 3v3 of that happens.

You got that right, LD doing what he does way too often, stops his feet, slows down the play, allows the other team to get in position and/or check him. A BAD HABIT that needs to be broken if this team has any hopes of getting wins on a regular basis.

Absolutely. Which, I hate to say it, he’s more engaged when he’s playing WITH Connor (that OT play aside). It would be a dream if he could “carry his own line” but as I described in a different thread he could be that winger Oilers mgmt can’t seem to find for Connor (though, I have to say Lucic and Rattie have impressed me 5v5 this weekend). Regardless, Leon needs to keep his legs moving. Maybe he needs to not get PK time, since we spend so much time on the PK. He was out with Rieder for awhile then later with a McDavid on the PK.

LD did score 2 goals though right? :)

The amount of perfection needed from 1/4 of our cap hit to be able to win any game is astounding.

We could end this year with a 100+ point guy and a 90+ point guy and not be in the playoffs because no one else aside from Nuge can do anything.

He did score 2 today... one on the powerplay and the other was 2 seconds AFTER the PP expired, so he was on with his (should be) super star PP unit linemates.

And yeah, that’s the embarassing part. If Connor/Leon/Nuge aren’t scoring, it’s a lost cause.

Yeah, what I've been harping on LD for awhile now is that he only gets it out of 3rd when he's hunting down a feed from Connor. You have to skate miles to play center, and I don't think Leon is a 2C until he's prepared to do that. Centers are in the play at both ends of the ice. And yes, given the optics of how much juice he appears to be lacking as a young man later in games this year (and years past), the PK will still suck as much if he's not on it. Leon's a 1W who can take some draws.

Yeah, as Kr55 said, critical of a 90 pt. guy potentially? Only because of the promise and the obvious instincts that LD has, and the obvious shortcomings that are blatantly standing in the way of what I think is a ton of upside....a few points worth and maybe more importantly, less of those ill advised turnovers, and a faster more dangerous rate of play. How dominant could he be if he cut even half those shortcomings out of his game?
