Figure for 2.1M of cap space usage you'd at least get golden pucks!

Well. Today was uneventful in the grand scheme of things.
I’ve lost hope over the weekend. This isn’t a playoff team

Well, if the spooner/rattie demotions do happen, along with Jones going down, I guess we will only be exceeding the cap by ~700k instead of ~3.2M
I think that better aligns with our results. We definitely look like a team that is over the cap by ~700k. Not one ~3.2M over. I would expect at least 3 games over .500 for a team 3.2M over the cap.

Won’t be surprised if Rattie gets claimed.
Imagine a scenario Spooner doesn’t report. His contract could then be void, no? Making him an FA to sign with the Rangers for league min.

So what you're saying is Benoit Pouliot... the MacTavish gift that just keeps on giving. We're over the cap because of a ludicrous 5x$4M contract that we then bought out.

So, is this and the Jones demotion just a paper transaction to save a week's worth of three salaries to try to help manipulate the cap?
Basically demote all the scratches for tomorrow's game, don't call anyone back up until next Monday and get several days' worth of cap relief?
And if someone takes your baggage off your hands on waivers, no one loses any sleep (until Rattie starts lighting it up for some other team)...

Rattle should get claimed. I’m actually sorta bullish on him, given the right situation.
If Chiasson wasn’t such a pleasant surprise I feel Rattie would be doing just fine
I have a WHL bias for Rattie. He was unbelievable in those playoff battles against that strong OK club back then. Just like Broissoit was against the Winterhawks.

It's funny because Chaisson has been a total drag on the 1st line for almost a month now. He's tanking McDavid's possession numbers like Caggiula did before, and Hitch has been ignoring it. He's a total clown in his own end and is constantly making bad plays that lead to extended time in our zone.
Rattie probably should have been given another try up there over this last while, but nope.

I'd be surprised if Rattie gets picked up. I am not pissing on the guy, I just think a lot of teams have a Rattie type guy. A tweener who is a really, really good AHLer,. He can play in the NHL a bit and if he gets into the exact right situation, can maybe be an AHLer.
I don't see Spooner getting picked up. I pray he does. Makes the trade look worse but at this point, I don't care anymore. It's done. Getting rid of that contract would be nice.

I don’t imagine anyone claims Spooner. I think the only outcome we can hope for is that he just doesn’t report to Bakersfield and his contract becomes void.

I wouldn’t get your hopes up. Good chance these guys are both back up after the all-star break. The Oilers are just getting a break on their salaries for a week as they stretch like crazy to avoid the cap issues they’ve created for themselves.
Pretty remarkable that the Oilers have over-spent pretty much every other team this year to deliver the results that they have....

Looked yesterday at McDavid+Chaisson numbers.
McDavid gets 34% of the high danger chances when that combo is out at 5v5. That is insane. McDavid has been a 55-60% guy his whole career. THis is worse than Caggiula+McDavid stats.
Looks like Hitch is maybe finally getting away from that based on the lineup announcement for tonight.

.. That Spooner trade was brutal, Strome has 6 goals with NYR (6-5 in 29 games), Chiarelli is ultimately to blame, but anyone involved in pro scouting that thought Spooner was a player should get their notice .. moves like this aren't solely on the GM.. its a group effort.. if Chiarelli goes there needs to be some additional flushing... get out the Draino..
He traded a legitimate NHL center for less than nothing, the Oilers are now stuck with a contract they can't dump... he lost cap space.

My wife does not watch hockey. She could not name 6 Oilers. I took her to the Jets game New Years Eve. Middle of second period she says to me: "who is number 23 (Spooner) - he's useless."

Not for the Oilers she couldn't.
