I can just envision an unshaven Chiarelli giving a rumpled track suit presser Monday morning.

It those words precede a major trade, the team is in real trouble. Hopefully, if those words are spoken on Monday, they are spoken by Bobby Burgers about Chia.

Team still thinks 15 minutes of effort should be enough to win games. Some of those goals against were a result of pure laziness. Maybe it's just buckling under the pressure.

Not a playoff team. If we fluke in because the west blows, we will get eaten alive in the playoffs. Try again next year. With someone else in charge of hockey ops of course.

One positive was Pulju. Kid gets a speck of confidence and he seems to become 50% faster out there. Keep it up laddy.

This Flames team is pretty good. Pains me to say it. But they are a deep team. To quote Adam... Le Sigh.

Back to the Oilers...

Great game by JP. That penalty call on him was trash. Think that was his best game in a long time.

Koskinen did his best to give us a chance. Made some unreal saves. Like cmon, give him some D support and goal support. He’s clearly out #1. Is it too early to sign him for next season?

Lucic with another goal. Beauty tip on that one.

Refs kept an unusually tight leash on this one; made some bad calls and missed some obvious ones.

Manning... go back to the PB. Please.

Klefbom, please be healthy and be back soon. We miss you.

Hitch learn a lesson about Manning yet? Almost costed us the last game too.

Guy should not be in an NHL lineup. Somehow we end up with a player worse that Gryba, who we bought out for no reason, for 125% the cost and an extra year on his deal.

Can only hope the management team's plane gets hijacked on the way to the wine summit so there are no stupid decisions made until the next group of goons takes over.

I really don’t know what he offers, that Keegan Lowe doesn’t.

He killed any chance of a comeback tonight. I hope he rots in the press box.

Why the GM attached this barnacle to the hull of this team is flabbergasting.

Pete Charelli in the Edmonton Journal on New Year's Eve:

“These deals weren’t knee jerk reactions.<snip> we felt it was imperative we shore up our defence right now at this critical juncture in the season. With the information we know on our injured players, we felt it was time to bring in some established defencemen. Understand the feedback that these aren’t Top 4 defencemen, but they are good, solid defenders. They both defend hard. They both move well. And it was something we felt we had to do at this point in time. These are two players that are going to come in and help our ‘D,’ shore up our ‘D.’”

That explains it all.

But hey, at least Chia wasn't the guy to hurt his feeling making him a poor guy making a million bucks in a lower league. Chia can sleep easy at night that he didn't ruin a life.

He's ruining part of my life...

It may not be the most essential part, but I have a pretty deep-rooted love for the Edmonton Oilers, and Chiarelli, Lowe, Nicholson, Katz, MacTavish, etc. are doing their damnedest to kill that.

What a frustrating game. I was there in person. The whole team looks depressed. No one finishing checks, no one making passes, no one showing much intensity shift to shift.

Just ugly to watch us lay down for our rival team - a team that brings so much to hate to the table each time they play us, that there's just no excuse for playing with no emotion.

Lot of weak play by a lot of Oilers.
Biggest disappointment for me was LD. He's supposed to be our No.2, flat footed on the 1st goal, which he was for most of the game, looked dopey all night, standing still, passes into opposing skates, Koski bailed him on one big fat double cheese pizza. He's a problem. Should be pulling his own line as a center, but can't, need to play Nuge instead. Nuge would be a more complimentary player with McD IMHO. Chaisson was invisible the last few games, but he is what he is.. McD needs some better players to work with, he's carrying that entire franchise (including management) on his back. weights

Button was talking recently how he thinks Bouchard will have to add some urgency and intensity to his game, get quicker feet if he is to make it in the NHL, same can be said for LD, he needs to get those feet out of the cement.

LD.....most frustrating player on the Oilers for me, because the elite talent and creativity is there, obviously. Capitalizes being on Connor's wing, certainly. But... we still see that he plays smaller than his 'big body'. Turnovers on blind prayer passes. Only seems to get it out of 2nd when he's looking for a feed from Connor on a 2 on 1. Looks straight-legged and gassed often. It's totally why he's not centering the 2nd line. I'm hoping he will work this stuff out of his game and fulfill that roll.

I digress, LD and how he leaves wanting a bit is pretty low on the list of issues with the Oilers. The Flames have significantly more depth than the Oilers, and haven't ransacked their roster at wing for nothing. They've probably got 3 guys on their back end who would be the top 3 defenders on the Oilers. I think they're well coached. The Oilers this year are a bubble team at best. No secrets there, I think most were predicting wildcard at the start of the season.

There probably isn't a guy I don't dislike in the Flames' lineup. Sucks to lose to dirtbags.

The coach of this team reminds me of the Iraqi Information Officer at times, but in his defence it’s much better than the butt hurt father figure approach.

I didn’t hear it personally, but a buddy of mine told me that during the broadcast Randorf had mentioned Hitchcock stated pregame that his message to the room was to not get sucked into the chippy game. If true, for a team with well documented ‘sensitivity’ issues, that message alone can explain why they didn’t show anything resembling a pulse for a large part of the game for being to afraid to engage and take a penalty. There were an obscene amount of penalties taken last night, most of the ‘huh’ variety (on both teams). But in a BoA you KNOW Calgary is going to come out, be engaged and play that style of game.. especially against McDavid. And there was no answer all night. Zero response.

Kassian’s turtle joke on Tkachuk was funny, don’t get me wrong. But it did nothing but get some laughs.

If you’re not going to push back when your best player is getting hacked, whacked (and not the good kinda whacked), mauled and abused... what’s the point of putting on the jersey? What’s the point of saying ‘we play for each other’, when it’s clear you don’t. Last night was another example of playing with each other (and not the good kind of playing with each other).

Maybe Hitch isn’t the answer behind the bench, with this sad sack of a roster.

Yeah, I feel when the game was within reach they were pretty careful not to get sucked into bad penalties. Yet like you say, odd penalties were still being called both ways.

They were being careful until Manning threw away any hope of a comeback. That play was not careful at all. Untimely to say the least.

And it was a hit on Frolik (iirc)... even less called for.

I heard the comments about the pre-game chat. Hitch specifically said, if Calgary plays the game their way, Calgary wins, but if Edmonton plays the game their way, Edmonton wins. Basically, Hitch is of the opinion that Calgary plays a very physical and chippy game, and that Edmonton can't win against that. I was very frustrated to hear that because I interpreted that to mean he didn't want Oilers to retaliate, which obviously was his message as we saw from the complete lack of response from any Oiler when McDavid was cut TWICE in the 1st period. I was spitting mad that Lucic, Kassian, Khaira, didn't either immediately engage and drop the gloves, or alternatively, do the very same thing to Gaudreau.

Chia has filled this team with pluggers and low offense talent players, yet the message to the team is that they are high flying skilled players who shouldn't be engaging in the chippyness. Total joke.

This is super frustrating. That SHOULD be the game this team plays, especially in games like last night, because that's how Chiarelli has them built. A team with a big bodied, heavy player, on EACH LINE. Drai/Khaira&JP/Lucic&Kass/Brodz... literally a big bodied heavy player on each line and NO PUSHBACK. Which goes back to how I was saying this team is built for playoff hockey. Anyway, that pregame message is very frustrating... allow Calgary to play their game, which is expected to be a chippy game and go about your business while being pushed around and your Captain being targeted by their plugs. When they, or anyone for that matter, plays that style of game against us and we respond by changing our tampons between periods/during the intermission (maybe that comment is best served for the OT forum? Sorry if the use of tampon is too much?) we won't be successful. I'm not saying there has to be an all out assault launched, but you need to push back. Bt pushing back you show hem they have to adjust to play YOUR game... ugh.

I took it to mean not to get into a shoot out with them, because we don't have the horses to do that and win so to keep it tight defensively to limit their scoring chances. ( in other words dumb the game down and wait for our chances because that's the only chance we have of winning ) The only ones that have free reign on this team are Batman and Robin. Staying out of the penalty box and not getting sucked into their cheap shot shenanigans is a good idea too against a good offensive team like the Flames. Oilers make way too many mistakes with and without the puck. That Leon blind backhander might be something Hitchcock tries to get out of his game. For some reason he's stuck on a play that hardly ever works and is a liability. Needs to have a fire lit under that lazy butt of his too and get more engaged in all aspects of the game. Love the way McDavid never seems to get down on himself or the team no matter what. Just imagine what he could do on a better team!

Overall a pathetic, soulless effort by a team that just doesn't have much depth and a brutally ( outside of Nurse and Russell sometimes) bad D- core. Thanks Chia.

Caleb Jones had a very tough night but he's still got lots of up side.

On the positive, Young JP looked pretty good and Lucic is "on fire". Uh...go .....oilers?

I thought top to bottom, it was a bad effort from
The defence corps. Nurse was really not good. Russell could not complete a pass. Benning may have been the best last night simply due to not making any major gaffes. There was no one else that could say that.

The best team ( by a mile ) won the game and Koskinen saved the Oilers from getting totally embarrassed. That's unfortunately, the way I saw it and I don't expect it to get much better. They just don't have the players to compete with the better teams in the league and Calgary has become one of those. Larsson and Jones got hammered! 3 goals at least from what I saw. Not sure why Manning is taking so much heat, they were to blame for critical goals scored by the Flames.

1st unit PP was extra bad last night. THey actually had loads of chances to get back in the game before things got totally desperate, but pissed away so many PP chances with pitiful puck movement by the top unit.

Somehow our PP is top 10 in the NHL though, so...I guess they do something right. Wonder how much it is propped up by the individual McDavid efforts though like the night before. The actual setup in the zone is very hit and miss still.

If this team makes the playoffs they'll get stomped in four games. Not ready for the playoffs, another wasted year should cost both Chiarelli and Bobby Nicks their jobs.

Fire them all. Every single one of them. They have collectively sewered this franchise and are responsible for only making the playoffs twice since their tentacles starts wrapping around the internals of the franchise in the early 2000’s despite high draft picks and new ownership

About the time Glen Sather left, things started going sideways and have not recovered. Hitchcock taking over is like a new captain taking over a ship with a big hole in it taking on water. He can only do so much to try to keep her afloat. Has done a good job but doesn't have the crew to make this a serious playoff team in my opinion. Hope they can re sign Koskinen, that would be a good place to start. Forget about this season. Conner can do a lot but it's not enough.
