I'm not mad about the late goals by the Avs, given that they were pressing and the Oil were down to 4-5 D-men plus Benning taking yet another penalty late for that PP goal. Koski is unreal, and the Oil offense seems to have woken up a bit.

After Colorado lost in an Avalanche of goals in their last game to Tampa, 7-1(?), to allow 6 tonight I’m sure angered that top line which lead to that late push.
Koski, one weak one but holy solid as we’re getting accustomed to.
Please Klef, don’t have a serious injury.

Oilers win and Rantanen piles up the points for my hockey pool. Would have been nice to see a few more McPoints, but I'll take that game.

Koskinen should have been first second and third star. Not that the rest of the team played badly but he was the main reason they won this one. Quite a few great saves by him. Benning with that late penalty to give the Avs life that eventually resulted in a goal sucked but what do you do. They beat a really good team.

Bummer about Benning's fight is that we had to role 4 D for the time he was out. That really set us up for being exhausted at the end...and then he took a penalty, lol. That call was bull though. Ref really being generous. Rantanen was gonna play that puck and put his stick 1 inch away from it and decided to let it keep going instead. McDavid can be mauled for just being within 3 feet of a puck.

Some of those saves were shades of Joseph, good Lord the Avs had some good looks and Koskinen stoned em on at least 4 or 5. Goalie win even though the Oilers got 6.
Didn't like most of that 3rd period, that was a bad penalty for Benning to take.
Great road win. Colorado is a good hockey team, leans heavy on their top line...pretty scary if they had some D.
Is this for reals?
Hitch figgers Klef out for weeks. That's bad news and bad timing.

Yup Darnell is going to see a lot more minutes and his game isn't that tight these days. I think Gravel can handle 2nd pairing minutes for a while over Benning.

Wideman hasn't drawn in since the 3rd. I almost forgot he was on the team. I'd expect to see more of him.

I suppose he has some experience on a PP at least. I know Nurse scored today, but I don't feel like you can expect that shot to go in very often. Wideman actually shoots right too...

Only 11 games, but not too shabby so far
Woodguy @Woodguy55
HITCHCOCK ERA:
Oiler Goal Share after 11 games (8-2-1)
Even strength (5v5, 4v4, 3v3):
McDavid On Ice 11-6 (65%)
McDavid Off Ice 12-11 (52%)
Net EV +6
Special Teams (PP+SH For–PK+SH Against):
6-4
Net ST +2
Empty Net:
1-4
Net EN -3
SO
1-0
SO=+1
Net Goal Differential +6
This was the breakdown for the first 20 this year before the coach change:
Oiler Goal Share after 20 games (9-10-1)
Even strength (5v5, 4v4, 3v3):
McDavid On Ice 20-14 (59%)
McDavid Off Ice 18-28 (39%)
Net EV -4
Special Teams (PP+shorties for - PK + shorties against):
17-19
Net ST -2
Empty Net: 2-5
Net EN -3
Net Goal Differential -9
The GA rate is the biggest difference.

I still find it amazing how this team (for years now) can't put anything in the net with the goalie pulled, while giving up so many 6-on-5 goals.

I do wonder how much is just that it's the team I watch, and I wonder if other teams struggle as much 6-on-5 and I just don't see it - but yeah, I always think we should do better at scoring empty net goals. The Oilers didn't even threaten last night. They seemed to just waste the puck whenever it was on their stick with the empty net.
It would have been really nice to see a Nuge hat trick, or an extra McPoint...

Maybe you guys didn't notice, but they were down 2 d-men including one of their best for the last part of the game. If the Oil defended this poorly with a healthy d-corps then sure, but Klef left the game in the second while Russell missed most of the third, and the Avs were pressing. Credit Koski for making the saves when it mattered, and keep in mind that until the Oil went down a couple of d-men they were handling the Avs' vaunted offence with ease.

MOGA! BABY MOGA!
Klef gone for a month, if I'm making lines, its;
Larsson Nurse
Russel Gravel
Benning (Garrison/Wideman)
Nurse on #1 PP
I luvs the Kassian!
Lucic making some good plays, awesome take-away and set up for Nugie.
Gravel continues to trend upward
McD has the puck on a string. Plays against the best producing line in the NHL, makes it clear to everyone ... he's on another freak'n level.
Benning needs to stay 5/6, he has his hands full against the bigs.
